Every Child Deserves a Mother and a Father…

posted by on March 25 at 16:56 PM

A former bank executive facing trial for embezzlement beat to death his wife and the couple’s four adopted children before killing himself by ramming his car into a highway sign post, police said on Tuesday.

Investigators in Iowa City provided details of the tragedy which came to light on Monday when the bodies of Sheryl Sueppel, 42, and the couple’s children ranging in age from 3 to 10 were found in their house on a quiet suburban street.

Police Chief Samuel Hargadine said Sueppel left a written note and other messages behind which indicated that he killed his wife first and then the children. A baseball bat may have been used in the beatings….

The children had been adopted from Asia, with one of them only recently joining the family.

Shit, adoptive parents don't need this.

Shit, a lot of "adoptive" parents don't need kids in the first place.

This is too depressing to comment on. I'd rather make snide remarks about Hillary.

I blame McCain/Bush 08 for their twelve year plan to destroy our nation's morals and values.

Was he under sniper fire?

Murder-suicides, please take Schmader's advice: do the suicide part first, not after.

Was he looking at a billboard for Dolly Parton's Backwoods Barbie? If so, Jeff Kirby would say that being tricked into screwing an old lady caused the whole thing.

I live in Iowa City and am a grad student at the university. Not only was this a horrible crime, but the university alerted the students via e-mail and phone message "Hawk Alert" telling them there was a gunman on the loose. (With no helpful information, like "stay where you are" or where the crime occured, which was actually rather far from campus.) So several thousand people, myself included (while in class on campus), get freaked out thinking of VA Tech and NIU. Then they send another message saying not to call the police because the lines are jammed. And now it turns out the guy didn't even have a gun? I feel awful for this terrible crime, but I am so frustrated with the university's shitty handling of the whole thing. Sitting in that classroom not knowing what was happening was one of the most terrifying experiences of my life, and the action by the university was totally unjustiied here. Ugh.

In other "Every Child Deserves a Mother and a Father" news, a former high school wrestler is taking great care of his children, adopted and biological.

Sorry, didn't mean for it to come across as a "poor me" post--I just think the response to the crime was really mishandled by the University and the Iowa City police. They really jumped the gun and scared a lot of people, unnecessarily, in my opinion.

This is so sad. It makes me think of how sick our society is. It feels like this kind of thing happens often. Why don't children learn to deal with angry, disappointment, shame and pain? Why is it that so many men find a "solution" in killing their wives/girlfriends and children? (And it is mostly men killing their (ex)-partners and children.

the continued rage is the horror

mass killings by beating is rage beyond all understanding.

Can I be the asshole that start complaining about how this isnt real news and what about what happened in Iraq earlier today?

Aside from that- as a perspective adoptive parent- we totally dont need this shit. What good is it to kill everyone THEN yourself? I'd almost understand more if he had just killed one or the other, but not both. Fucker.

Perhaps this should be titled "Every Child Deserves to Live with His or Her Biological Mother and Father."

I read an article on these kinds of murder suicides awhile ago. Supposedly, what is running though dad's mind is "I want to kill myself, but my family will suffer horribly without me. I'd better take them with me."

Sick.
