Dept. of It’s About Time

posted by on March 5 at 12:25 PM

A gentleman named Memo Garcia emails that he’s just opened a 24-hour Mexican restaurant on the Ave called Memo’s.

Memo%27s.jpg

Memo says, “It’s pretty unbelievable how stoked our customers have been. Especially students who come from other states. They say they have been looking for this sort of food all over Seattle. I even had a customer yell of happiness when he tasted our food…. our busiest time of the day is Friday and Saturday after the bars close. Now Seattle will have a place to eat delicious food 24/7. Our price range is 95 cents to $6.99.” His family owns Mexican restaurants in California and Oregon.

At the moment, two-thirds of Stranger reader-reviewers like Memo’s in the yelling-of-happiness way (“Bomb diggety”!). On behalf of our fair city and, in particular, the good beer-drinking students of the University of Washington: Thank you, Memo. Memo’s is at 4743 University Way NE, 729-5071.

In other 24-hour dining news: The 13 Coins has upgraded the decor and downgraded worker healthcare benefits. Workers from the 13 Coins leafleted Sonics fans at Key Arena last Friday; former coach Lenny Wilkens is an investor in the restaurant. He also runs the Lenny Wilkens Foundation, which “funds organizations that provide basic healthcare and education with dignity to culturally diverse communities in the Northwest” (and is associated with the truly wonderful Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic). Stranger reader-reviewers haven’t flocked to the 13 Coins because of the remodel; the consensus is that the food’s mediocre and overpriced.

what the fuck is the allure of 13 Coins? Outrageously priced diner food served in a retro 70's hotel restaurant, but not meant ironically.

I'll have to give Memo's a shot then.

Oh my...Memos is right across the street from me. I thought it looked fairly promising, now I'm downright excited. Especially about the 24 hours part, I can't believe I didn't notice that before.

This morning I went in for an egg and potato burrito and the guy at the counter said every night shift has been crazy - and that it was hard for those speaking english as a second language to understand drunks. So, drunken patrons, enunciate as best you can. These guys have your best interests at heart.

This place and Guanaco's have made all my dreams come true for the U-D.

We need more 24 hour or at least late night food places desperately!

Mexican food is delicious and all, but it's about the last cuisine type I think of at 3 AM.

Still, SO glad to see a 24 hour after the death of IHOP.

24 Mexican food on the ave? Jesus, why the fuck didn't I think of that. Memo's has the potential to make a killing.

13 Coins does suck. I never understood the appeal of the place.

The only appeal of the 13 coins WAS the decor!

I once worked for this very sleazy bullshitter, who would have these awful luncheon "meetings" at the 13 coins. There, and that other place that used to be on Westlake (the Joker?)

Anyway, we'd be sitting in those dorky 70's "executive-style" booths, and I'd be stuffing myself with celery and olives from the relish tray both to keep from laughing at that clown, and because the food was so expensive (he never picked up the tab, so I'd get a cheese sandwich or something like that)

I'm happy to let that particular piece of history go. But if you were talking about the Gold Coin lounge in the old Kennedy Hotel. That would be another matter.

Sweet news about the place on the Ave.

I liked the old 13 Coins - now I'll have someplace to go after the horrible redesign there.

MY God, Memos is a block from my house, and I can't stop eating there. IT's cheaper and easier than buying groceries and cooking.

Their horchata is fan fucking tastic too. Rice milk with just enough cinnamon to leave a mark. Damn it, im gonna have to go there now....
