A Mother’s Love

posted by on March 12 at 9:43 AM

The mother of a 14-year-old girl was passed out in the passenger seat of her Dodge Caravan when her drunken daughter hit a ditch on state Route 18 and rolled the van several times near Tiger Summit, State Patrol troopers said.

The girl wasn’t wearing a seat belt and was thrown out of the vehicle through the back window, causing serious head and back injuries. She was rushed to Overlake Hospital Medical Center, but later stabilized and released to another medical facility, a hospital spokeswoman said. The girl’s 32-year-old mother suffered minor injuries and was released from the hospital Tuesday afternoon.

“I can’t even wrap my brain around how you would let your 14-year-old daughter drive drunk, let alone drive with her,” State Patrol Trooper Cliff Pratt said.

Messed up adults raise messed up teens.
Fourteen has to be the worst year of life.

My first thought was "how drunk was the mom?" Was she asleep, or passed out?

I'm sorry Dan, I agree w/ 90% of the stuff you write, but the fact that we don't know the orientation or marital status of the mom is just more proof that your jones for child endangerment stories doesn't serve any purpose higher than sensationalism.

I must have missed this, Dan, but where does it say she's a hetero?

Oh yeah, that's in your imagination.

Um, this isn't under "Every Child Needs a Mother and a Father", it's "A Mother's Love". Seems appropriately posted to me.

Fnarf@7-

Dan allegedly posts the ECNaMaaF stuff to combat a particular myth that's corrosive to the LGBT community. What's the purpose of this post? Don't let your 14 year old drive drunk? Got it.

These kind of stories are basically torture porn a la Saw and Hostel. If there's a harsh political reason, then fine I guess, it calls for harsh actions. But this one is just as news-that's-only-news-because-it's-shocking as "ohmygod! They sell dildos!"

Impressive #5. How long have you been waiting to use that trick?

Not long enough, obviously.

In case y'all hadn't noticed, Dan never said anything in that post regarding whether this dumb bitch/horrifically awful parent is hetero or homo. While most of his posts referring to these disturbingly awful individuals are about straight parents, perhaps this one is just one of those rage inducing news stories that needed to be shared on Slog because keeping something like this to himself is liable to make his poor faggy head explode. I know mine almost did.

Mom wasn't in any shape to stop her daughter from driving---she was passed out in the passenger seat.

It was all just a bonding experience really... I found it all quite touching.

I heard about this yesterday on the radio yesterday and saw it on the news this morning. Hetero or not, I'm just surprised it took this long to get on the Slog.

And the mom will be a grandmother within the next four years. I'd lay money on it.

Stabilized and released to another facility after serious head and back injuries? Sounds like Overlake went through her purse, couldn't find an insurance card, and said, "Send that bitch to Harborview!"

Healthcare in America.

Listen up, and especially you, Sven: those posts that point out the hypocrisy of demanding heterosexual parents, blah blah blah, are posted under the title "Every Child Needs a Mother and a Father".

This post is not one of those. Look at it.

Just because it's by "Dan Savage" and concerns bad parenting does not mean it's part of that series. You're getting your series mixed up.

As you were.

um, guys ...

the mom was passed out drunk in the passenger seat.

where does it say she got the daughter to drive - it just means she passed out drunk - and the daughter drove.

well, that's okay then.

@18: Thank you for pointing that out.

Dan might not have a better tag for it though. It DOES take a heterosexual coupling (of sorts) to make a child.

KIDS: If you're 14-years-old, stoned and drunk, driving too fast on a curvy road with your passed-out mom riding shotgun, WEAR YOUR SEATBELT!!! They never learn...

Fnarf, set aside the subject line for a second.

If it's not pointing out something about the gay/straight parenting argument, then WHAT'S THE POINT of posting this disgusting stuff? It's not like it's educational- we all know not to pass out and let our wasted 14 year olds drive. WHAT'S THE POINT?

Because without a point, it's just sensationalism, and I think Dan & Co are better than that.

#22, true, but Dan also has a kid. That reminds me, Dan posted some pictures of his kid snowboarding a few weeks ago, I wonder if he tagged that one HETERO?

“I can’t even wrap my brain around how you would let your 14-year-old daughter drive drunk, let alone drive with her,” State Patrol Trooper Cliff Pratt said.

Trooper Pratt has clearly never played the "whoever is least drunk has to drive" game.
