Dan is just smitten? PLEASE Obama is freaking HOT!!! Damn, he just drips hottness!!! ((swoon))

I remember taking a leak next to John Kerry once - it's strange, cause you don't really act the way you usually do, and it makes it take longer.

But why no zero-flow toilets? Don't they care about the environment?

@ Will in Seattle,

Look, I'm as environmentally conscious as the next tree-hugger, but those zero-flow urinals just make the restrooms smell truck-stop-style revolting. You have to hold your breath to use the pisser where they're installed.

I hate it when there are no dividers between the urinals.

Obama's not "lagging well behind" in Ohio. Recent polls put him within 6 points of Clinton - some polls put him within 4 points. He's winnowed that down from a double-digit gap.

Plus, keep in mind that just one day prior to voting in WI, polls were showing him with a narrow 5-pt. lead. WI was anything but a narrow victory.

As Andrew Sullivan would say: "Know hope."

(And yeah, he's way hot.)

The filters need to be changed periodically and the smell will not be there.
The new urinals rock!

so Dan, does the shout out to gays cancel out the donnie Mc-I-am-not-gay invitation? Seriously, do you think Obama genuine or is it possible that he is pandering?

As for Mccain, I'm glad Obama is hitting back too. HRC is not the one running in November.

In unrelated commentary, I once used the urinal next to president Vaclav Havel.

I didn't do it on purpose. I'm tossing this post up as fast as I can before heading to the airport, and asked Amy Kate to give a spell check.

Did the shout out cancel out the Donnie thing? Not quite. But it's good to know that the Dem frontrunner has to include us now in his stump speech. His speech in the black church challenging African Americans on their homophobia was much more powerful, and went a lot longer toward making up for the Donnie crapola earlier this year.

To seal the deal with Barack Fitzgerald Obama, I need to hear him answer this:

"Will you, in your first 100 days in office, sign an executive order rescinding the Pentagon's 'don't-ask-don't-tell' policy?"

On a related note, I once peed next to Arthur Goldberg - oh, shit - I'm beginning to sound like the irrelevant will of seattle.

Well *thank heavens* that giving a good speech is the only necessary qualification to become President. After all, we wouldn't want things like reasoned analysis, specific policies, and actual experience to factor in at all. Nope, better to just throw out some nebulous buzz words like "hope" and "change" and watch as the herd comes to graze.

this is exactly why he is the best candidate: he challenges his attacks with confidence, not defensiveness. he turns the argument around. he has a SPINE. i only hope the rest of the democrats are taking notes.

The gays get a shout out, so I am, of course, smitten now.

Gay friend of mine was a Clinton supporter. Went to see Clinton in Seattle- no mention of social equality, much less LGBT issues. Complained to me. Went to see Obama in Seattle. Shout out happened. Now an Obama supporter.

It's stuff like this that will wind up costing Clinton the endorsement. Not big issues, I think, but the block and tackling of running a competent campaign- things like letting your surrogates say stupid shit on the campaign trail, not reigning in your husband, etc, etc.

But she'd still make a better President.

Clinton Obama 2008.

Voting for someone simply because they gave a shout-out to the gays is as stupid as the decisions any other one-issue makes. "I'm voting for so-and-so because he's Christian!" "I'm voting for HIM because I KNOW he's Pro-Life!" Never mind the untold myriad of other positions the person may hold. I'm gay and I will not be voting for him simply because he pretended to care. How much will he actually do for us? Probably as much as Hillary - nothing. At least she's somewhat honest about it.

@14 - Sen Clinton would promise you that.

And then renege on that promise when the rubber hit the road.

It's all about triangulation with her.

And the zero-flow urinals at the UW don't smell - you just need people who take care of them properly.

Will in Seattle @ 25,

Please inform the good folks at Meany Hall 'cause I almost went into a coma the last time I used the gents there.

@ Ugh, etc.

It blows my mind when people say Obama doesn't have enough experience. He was a constitutional law professor for over a decade, a state legislator, federal senator and he has about the equivalent experience as Abraham Lincoln. Don't you think we srsly NEED someone like that in office after the last 7 years?

Posted by Original Andrew | February 27, 2008 12:23 PM
30

Obama also has experience running a disciplined, organized, on-message, tightly budgeted, and successful presidential campaign. Hillary's campaign has had leaks, off-message public statements, defections, public firings, financial problems, and it keeps losing.

I figure each of them would run the White House the same way they run their current organization.

Posted by elenchos | February 27, 2008 12:32 PM
31

@29...perhaps I should have said "enough experience." A, State legislatures are so not even the same thing so let's not pretend they are. B, that Senate experience has been one term. Do people generally become CEO's after a few years as an exec? Not unless they have something else significant to factor in. C, claiming any comparison to Abrahm Lincoln is retarded, and I shouldn't even have to mention the fact the world is infinitely more complicated now than 150 years ago, thanks.

Posted by Ugh | February 27, 2008 12:35 PM

Agreed, Ugh!

After all, it's not like 150 years ago our country wasn't on the path to civil war, or anything complicated like that.

@29 - I can't say I've used the ones in Meany Hall, just the ones at UWMC - in all the wings - and they are fine.

Now, as my gay conservative brother would say, just accept that President Obama is probably the best choice for America, and remember to breathe.

Does anyone even bother to mention anymore that "Al Qaeda in Iraq" has in fact very little connection with Al Qaeda (the one of Osama bin Laden fame) and is responsible for only two percent of insurgent attacks in Iraq? No?

Posted by johnnie | February 27, 2008 1:17 PM
35

Yes, its always bothered me the way Hillary NEVER mentions gay people unless its at a HRC (that's Human Rights Campaign, not Hillary Rodham Clinton) fundraiser. She ONLY talks about gay people when it is pandering to a predominantly GBLT audience.

Why is that? Probably because among Democrats her only base left are two Dem groups that are less likely to be pro-gay: the elderly and Blue Collar Dems.

If Obama's only base was latte liberals and Left Coasters I wouldn't give him props for his "shout-outs" either. Yet he gives those shout-outs in front of Black Church groups and at non-Blue State rallies where there is no indication those swing voters/independants he needs are likely to be enamored by gay shout-outs (Albuquerque, Dayton, Green Bay).

The "shout-out" isn't important in and of itself, but the fact Obama does it in very "mixed company" is. Wish I could say the same about Hillary.

Hey, Dan. I'm the chick you interviewed today after Obama's slamdunk-of-a-speech. Remember? You asked me if I voted Green Party in 2000 just because I have an eyering. Sheesh. (But like "passionate" above, Nader might get my vote in 2016 if he's still crazy enough) I appreciate your blog here--good stuff. And you're right on: today, the McCain zinger was a high point for me. But then again, I didn't get the opportunity to pee next to a senior Newsweek editor. How could you pass that up?

What's so great about a cruise missile strike against Al Qaeda? When Clinton tried that, he missed. And lots of people still get killed.

You know, just because you can't see who you are blowing up when you launch a missile, doesn't make it any less of a violent act. Sure, maybe it keeps our boys off the ground and all that, but the idea of making it easier for Americans to kill brown people doesn't exactly give me the warm fuzzies.

Posted by Mahtli69 | February 27, 2008 2:52 PM

It wasn't a cruise missile, it was an armed drone.

Big difference in price and payload.

And you can see them when you blow them up if you use the cruise missiles with the telemetry and imaging pods.

(i luv my former Boeing experience ...)

Obama is gonna go after Al-Qaeda alright... they will be everywhere.

Who created Al-Qaeda? Zbignew Brzezinski Obamas Foreign Policy Advisor July 3rd, 1979. The CIA supplied the money, 6 billion and the KLA ran joint ops, "Senate Republican Kosovo Report" look it up.

Expect more of the same.

@14

"Will you, in your first 100 days in office, sign an executive order rescinding the Pentagon's 'don't-ask-don't-tell' policy?"
Just rescind? and go back to what was before DADT, right? I just wanted to clear that up.

News flash for Sen Obama, a lot of people would rather fight Al Qaeda in Iraq than here, the general election will be quite different than the Democratic primary.

Yes that is a red herring, but in general, people are stupid. It is also morally indefensible to let innocent people die because of our arrogance. While I don't really want Al Qaeda to blow me up, considering that I didn't vote , when I had the option, in 2000, I deserve it more than some Iraqi child who never even had an option to vote for her government. However there are relatively few people who think that way.

It's good that McCain is computer illiterate, but I hope he doesn't hire anyone who is. I was looking for the source of the often repeated "quote" from Obama; "I'm not privy to Senate intelligence reports. What would I have done? I don't know." this seems to allegedly be from an appearance on Meet the press in July 2004, but in the Meet the press transcript from July 25, 2004; "STATE REP. OBAMA: I would have voted not to authorize the president given the facts as I saw them at that time." WTF? is the "quote" fake (not that the neocons would care) or did it come from somewhere else? However in the NBC NEWS' MEET THE PRESS. Nov. 7, 2004 transcript;

MR. RUSSERT: Before you go, you know there's been enormous speculation about your political future. Will you serve your full six-year term as U.S. senator from Illinois?

SEN.-ELECT OBAMA: Absolutely. You know, a little--some of this hype's been a little overblown. It's flattering, but I have to remind people that I haven't been sworn in yet. I don't know where the rest rooms are in the Senate. I'm going to have to figure out how to work the phones, answer constituent mail. I expect to be in the Senate for quite some time, and hopefully I'll build up my seniority from my current position, which I believe is 99th out of 100.

LOL, I bet Hillary knows where the White House restrooms are (but her staff apparently doesn't know how to use Google)
