Kirsten Stoltmann’s Punk (You Can’t Handle the Truth) (2007), vinyl lettering on Plexi-face mount Lightjet print, paint, wood, 65 by 43 inches
Two Fridays ago—shortly before I fell off the planet thanks to this bug that’s going around—Roberta Smith drew my attention to this image by suggesting that, “no disrespect intended,” it be turned into a poster. It’s a portrait of Stoltmann herself, very pregnant, on display in the show Vaginal Rejuvenation with Stoltmann and Amanda Ross-Ho at Guild & Greyshkul in New York.
That same day, I was teaching feminism in my contemporary art history class at Cornish, so I brought in the image and asked my students who they thought the macho question was directed to. Structuralist feminists, they said.
Pregnancy: where the rubber hits the road.

Please watch the NSFW images guys.
fucking cut that dammit. a bulk of your readers are at fuckin' work. i can click on the cuts when i get home.
Yeah, could this be put behind a cut, please?
Hey idiot don't post NSFW stuff right on the page, fuck
Fucking prudes! Talk about not being able to handle the truth.
@5, Personal prudery has nothing to do with it. The respondants have no control over their work place policies regarding internet usage. This image can get people fired. You may not be a prude but you obviously lack empathy, compassion and simple common sense.
Very NSFW - seriously, put it BELOW THE FOLD.
Just because you have a hangover this morning doesn't mean it's ok.
i agree and isn't it ironic that there are web ads for Lane Bryant on this page right now...
hey keekee if i end up sitting in a meeting with the hr director, my boss, and a security guard with a print out of that picture on the desk, i'll call them prudes and let you know how that works out.
WTF Jen. Your bland writing is hard enough to get through, but fuck this.
Put this shit behind a cut.
Hey its my first day at the job with my new pay rate, I don't want it to be my last.
NSFW in the title of the post or hide NSFW images behind a link, please.
Hey, all you NSFW whiners! What are you doing reading the SLOG on your boss's time anyway? If they're the firing type, that's already grounds for dismissal right there.
I'm just curious if it was ignorance or intent... wondering if there will be any acknowledgement from poster/staff, be it "whoops/sorry" or "fuck you."
Why don't we just move all Jen Graves art posts to a separate Art Blog ala Lineout?
... oh right, because no one would read it.
(And give her a break guys- she has to pull shit like this every once in a while to troll for comments)
I think Jen is just trying to hike up the State's unemployment rate.
SOME OF US ARE AT WORK KEEP THE NSFW IMAGES LABELED AS SUCH
Maybe playing online games would be safer? Otherwise, why look at a website with "Lustlab" on the page? Go look at political websites, it's more informative than this blog is anyway.
i already have my MCSE certificate:
Minesweeper Champion / Solitare Expert.
I like the nudity just fine-
but what the heck is a "structural feminist"?
Gloria Steinem's Architect?
A feisty Caryatid?
The lowest level of a human pyramid in a womens college cheerleading squad?
Nobody at the Stranger understands how things work in the real world. It's a waste of time to explain it to them. Just set Firefox to block all the images from the Stranger, and unblock them at home.
Now, can somebody clear up for me why pregnancy is where the rubber meets the road with respect to structuralist feminism?
Put this shit behind a cut you fool!
Not Safe for Work, and Not Interesting to Read.
Ries -- I meant the people who believe sexual difference is more created than naturally occurring. Sorry. My mind was stuck in academe-speak.
I JUST GOT PROMOTED!
13 did not say it loud enough. so let me give it a whirl :
IF YOU ARE READING THIS AT WORK IN THE FIRST PLACE, YOUR SORRY ASSES DO NOT HAVE A LEG TO STAND ON, AND NEED/DESERVE TO GET CAUGHT - SO SHUT THE FUCK UP!! ALL OF YOU!!!
And to the first snotty motherfucker that tries to counter with "DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO, ASSHOLE" - may I kindly respond, "THEN DON'T COMPLAIN ABOUT STUPID PERSONAL SHIT THAT YOU'RE ULTIMATELY RESPONSIBLE FOR - DUMBASS!!"
Take care, and have a great day!
@21, I completely forgot Firefox allows you to do this. Thank you for the reminder. I just added the Slog to that listing.

ad block plus.
@13, @26 You're both blowhards.
Lots of employers don't care how you spend your time, as long as you are productive. And all but the meanest ones let you browse the web on your break or at lunch. When you're older, you'll have experienced this. The problem is that when people walk past and see naked ladies on your screen, your boss is almost always forced to do something about it. Hence, the best thing is to block images and nobody will be unhappy.
@29 - And when you - and everybody else here - is older, you'll learn, as I said, to be RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR ACTIONS, and quit crying like little wittle babies when you happen to chance upon something that might get you in trouble with the boss man. You don't like it - go surf the Sesame Street website. Otherwise - tough (in this case) titties.
You all seem to be missing the most terrifying point brought up in this post. Jen Graves teaches a contemporary art histroy class at cornish. Poor kids.
@30 - Obviously it's not my constitutional right to browse Slog at work, but - silly me - I thought the Stranger would actually WANT us to bring them online ad revenue by visiting. Which we can't do if we're afraid of losing our jobs for doing so.
You have no business reading the Slog while at work. Period.
