Slog - Comments on War's Over

Iraq and Afghanistan may still be clusterfucks, but we can finally pull our troops out of the HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray war. Far too much has been wasted (like this post) on this senseless struggle, and now, at long last, we can get our guys out of there. After Wal-Mart, Netflix and other big players announced that they were backing Blu-Ray, Toshiba--inventor of the HD-DVD format--gave up the fight today, saying they would no longer develop, produce, or market HD-DVD players. So I guess this means I can get a Playstation 3 now....

@2 Why would Microsoft be bitter? They were one of the backers of HD-DVD but they weren't backing it very aggressively. The only way to watch HD-DVD on a 360 is to buy an additional external drive (and you can bet your ass there will be a similar Blu-ray drive soon enough).

Other than that, Microsoft isn't really a hardware producer. They didn't have much at stake in the HD format war to begin with.

I guess this is good news for me, since my company gave us each a PS3 at our Xmas party. I think I own all of five DVDs, though, so it's not like I have a huge library to replace. Also, the PS3 upconverts...

Sony is such a pile of shit.

This war was supposed to go on forever, and continue driving down the prices of regular DVDs, which are still perfectly valid forms of technology for the next 15 years.

Comment by Mr. Poe

Wait for the PS3. They'll have a slimmer version out soon that doesn't have the fucking power supply in the console. And it wont look like a fucking George Foreman grill.

You don't need a BluRay player right now, anyway. Wait for more titles and price drops. When $20 becomes the standard price for a movie, it's ready.
