Film

'Persepolis'

Drawn in big swaths of black and white and embellished with thin curls of cigarette smoke and cascades of jasmine flowers, Persepolis is a gorgeous film. But the best surprise if you've read Marjane Satrapi's graphic novel is the blood-stirring evocation of actual historical revolution and teenage rebellion, shown side by side, without diminishing either. This is a wonderful film. If you like graphic novels, music, or want to know more about what it's like to be Iranian and a girl, this is highly recommended!

The black and white imagery is simple, elegant, and effective. This film has "heart."
