51F and gray is sort of nice, until it drags into May.
Don't tease me with pictures of Winter Wonderlands! Our gray skies and unseasonable warmness do that already! *weeps*
russia?
Yeah, winter wonderlands of endless shovelling.
Winter wonderlands of filthy slush puddles that cascade over your boots and soak your socks so you squick black water everywhere for the rest of the day.
Winter wonderlands of four-foot snowbanks that cars park around so your streetcar home is blocked for twenty minutes while everyone waits for the driver to come back so we can beat him/her to fucking death.
Yay, winter!
(But yes, fresh snow is pretty. I fully admit that.)
yay! a city you can get around on rail!
seriously though chicago is my second favorite american city.
I kept reading "streetcar home" as "I live in a streetcar", which would definitely give you a snow-hating trump card.
I hear they ran out of snow shovels in Idaho.
It could be worse.
You sure weren't lying about your carbon footprint. Jesus Christ.
@5: Agreed. Chicago rocks. 'Cept of course when the wind is blowing.
I think I'd love to deal with that kind of winter, Gloria, maybe just for two years... but, after that I'd want to move Home.
fabulous here in CA. Of course.
Bob Newhart!
The field in Aspen where they pile up the snow after plowing is heaped up with 70 feet of snow right now. You could literally ski down the pile. So don't complain, it could be MUCH worse.
Well, my sister almost went crazy in Wisconsin after a few years there.
dammit, #12; I WAS GONNA SAY THAT!
and it made me think of Emily Hartley, R.I.P, (sniff)
Sigh. Chicago. It's the one thing I'll miss about the midwest when I finally leave.
i spent yesterday skiing baker. if you're looking for a winter wonderland, that's the spot.
I love New York, but--sigh, ennui. Chicago is the most beautiful city in the world.
Those have always been my two favorite buildings in Chicago for some reason - I love the parking garage on the lower floors and overall 1960s aesthetic of the towers.
The CTA: making Dan Savage forget about his humongous carbon footprint since 1982.
Dear cyn,
Sorry but you know this will only make me move back faster. Seattle is beautiful but I miss my home of bridges, giants and lions. Will visit often.
This winter has been kinda nuts, even by Chicago standards. I don't know why, but eveytime I see those two towers, I get hungry for corn on the cob!
Are those the Yankee Hotel Foxtrot towers?
Seriously Dan,
Is it worth being away from your kid so much just to pursue your "career"?
People who live in snowy cities can tell you that snow isn't white, it's black. Nasty, nasty black, with garbage and corpses in it that are revealed on the spring day the last of it finally melts away.
ecce STFU. Your botched abortion of a career as a rent boy for meth dealers didn't work out, and that makes you a bitter tool. Your obsession w/ stranger staffers is almost half as pathetic as your inane musings.
Ah, the corn cob towers from my childhood.
And! to ecce homo, the comment about Dan's parenting is uncalled for. Who the fuck are you to say what is or isn't right for his family?
Yes, Marina Towers = Yankee Hotel Foxtrot cover.
This would put you at the Sheraton, yes?
Are you an american aquarium drinker?
Dan - you need Cheddar-Guacamole fries, stat. Take the Red line up to Belmont. Get off the train to the west, walk 1/2 block to Muskies. Order said fries and maybe a chili dog. Then, pass out in a coma. Fun!
My carbon footprint is large. But not as large Megan's, not after all those people declined to commit suicide after reading her feature.
As for being away, it sucks. But it's mostly in Feb and Oct -- prime speaking gig months at our better Universities. Otherwise I'm at the house with the fam. And, I'm sorry, but I'm the breakfast dad -- eggs, waffles, fresh fruit. I makes it up to 'em, ecce, I does.
Oh, and I get around Chicago on the L -- in from the airports, to my gigs. I could take cabs, or cars. But when I know a city, and it has rapid transit, I tell 'em to keep their damn cars and cab vouchers. Doesn't make up for the flights, of course, but I loves me my trains.
@30 - Muskie's @ Belmont/Sheffield was replaced by a bank (about 2 years ago)
There's still an old Muskie's on Lincoln Ave @ Diversey.
Dan, enjoy the cold, this is getting old even for natives like me. 4-7 inches of snow in Chicago tonight.
No babies, no fat people, the perfect view, right Dan.
Dan, if you get up in Lake County, where we are still digging out from 13" of snow last week, I'll buy you a beer. Assuming we don't get snowed in yet again tonight.
Hey Dan, if you speak at U of C or Northwestern, please tell them that LT L says they can go fuck themselves.
Sorry, still bitter after their lies.
Fnarf@25 - Also dog shit. For some reason, there are many dog owners who seem to think that their dog's shit disappears when it goes into the snow. So, when the snow melts, our whole street is pretty foul.
@30 and @32 - that Muskies actually burned down, that's why it was replaced.
Oh, and this winter has definitely sucked more that usual.
cool pic!
i hope you had dinner with Bob and Emily Hartley last night. they are super cool.
I think you're in the same hotel where that guy ate my poo.
Where else are you speaking? I live in Hyde Park but get up to Boy's Town quite a bit. I would fucking love to buy you a few beers.
