The Present Now Will Later Be Past

posted by on February 25 at 8:55 AM

Yesterday, I posted a picture of Ralph Nader on the cover of Time magazine from December 12, 1969. My point being: Obama is right, the times they are a-changin’, Ralph. And it’s time to step aside.

Although, that same fall, on October 24, 1969, Time ran this cover:

Sigh.

At least they protested Vietnam seriously unlike Iraq which is protested in nicely controlled circumstances as not to disrupt traffic etc.

I could, very definitely, vote for Obama.

When he is ready. I'm not saying that he'll do a bad job, however the history of the last 40 years is filled with well meaning folks unable, unwilling, or unqualified to follow through on those committments.

We need change in this Country, but I'm sceptical of a single presidential election bringing it about.

I'd be happy to be proved wrong, but I think it is going to take a few more years to make it 'real'.

@3: I think that it's funny that you're linking to an organization that claims to support "great Republican candidates".

When you find one, could you let us all know? kthx.

Yeah, Andrew, and look how effective those protests were! They only took five more years after this issue to end the war! And got Nixon elected twice, the second time by a massive landslide. So, yeah, hit the streets, man!

Douglas Tooley @3: giving your repellent little blog exposure here is not a good idea. Someone with time on his hands might actually read it, and expose to the light little nuggets like "Is the UW Police Department anything better than the violent 'tool' (dildo) of a man hating lesbian, perhaps brought into the school through title IX?"

You also suggest that Ted Bundy's murder spree was caused by his rejection by "an outcast from his better bred UW Law School female cohorts - including some of those now in authority in this State?"

And then you suggest that when Rebecca Griego was murdered on campus last year, the real culprit was Griego; that "accusations of harrassment [sic] are actually the abuse."

I think you're full of shit, and your references to "my case" creep me out. I think your problem goes much deeper than the usual vacuous Young Republicanisms alluded to above.

You mean to tell me that people JUST noticed that this war is JUST like Vietnam? You have to be fucking kidding me.

Uh, it's not anything like Vietnam.

@11
Maybe I should clarify. I don't mean this is just like Vietnam as in the reasons for war are the same (they certainly aren't) however they are the same in the sense that it is a long, drawn out slaughter of servicemen and women and civilians that was popular at one time but is no longer popular because people realize 'war is bad' and 'war is expensive'. It's a war that is returning injured soldiers that are not being cared for by their government as promised. It's a war that we are waist-deep in and cannot simply leave as it will leave the region in an even more unstable political environment while completely ruining any of our remaining credibility with the rest of the world.
I concede that this war is not *exactly* like Vietnam, however the parallels are staggering.

I'm just waiting to see if Erica Barnett gets a look at the guy's blog who blames Ted Bundy on Title IX lesboes.

And you wonder why America's going down the tubes - all our money's being spent overseas in the Middle East, creating more terrorists than we kill, instead of in America rebuilding our infrastructure, shoring up our education and health care deficits (are we like 44th now of industrialized nations?), and replacing imported oil from the Middle East with American made wind, solar, geothermal, tidal and algae/switchgrass biomass energy.

Time to close the checkbook to the Middle East. And have our soldiers spend their salaries back home.

I'm so glad we stayed in Vietnam for 100 years and built permanent occupying bases there instead of pulling out.

If we hadn't the commie Reds would have followed us back to the USA and attacked us here! Or taken over the world!

Yeah, Nader please step aside. We don't want any distractions as big business and the blowhards battle for the throne.
