wow charles, you think this would be a good time to buy XOM stock. they have a low dividend yield but they might up it because of the profits.

why is anyone faulting exxon for what exxon does well. extract, refine and sell oil.

What's with all the double posting on stories already linked in the morning news? Don't you guys actually read the slog?? Or is it just something personal against Steinbacher?

Apparently the Exxon shareholders had their say in the 2000 and 2004 elections. I would have liked to have been a little richer than I am now -- I should have done my stock homework.

What stocks should I be buying in preparation for a Democrat victory? I expect "business as usual" stocks (ClearChannel, XOM, Halliburton, Raytheon, Boeing) for a GOP victory.

Sliding into a recession? Hardly. There hasn't been two quarters of a drop in the growth of the GDP. Until that happens, stop your whining.

--helped along with tax breaks and government subsidies. You paid for this largesse, American Taxpayer, and not just "at the pump."

raindrop, you can't say we are or arent in a recession if you have to rely on data later to tell you if you are in a recession. and it makes it no less important that we take a look at why gdp grew only .6% last quarter.

Well said, Andy.

Actually, all the oil stocks are up.

XOM, COP, RDI, you name it.

We're being ripped off, and Cheney is cutting the internet cables to Iran as we speak.

go to stock screener and find a stock with a high dividend yield. i would look at financial stocks in the next 3-6 months. they have been taking a beating which means you should scoop some of them up

No, stay away from financials.

Trust me on this.

A better bet is supermarket chains. People have to eat.

We're not being ripped off. We're paying through the nose for a drug we've discovered we can't live without -- indeed can't live without needing more and more and more. Exxon and the others set their prices based on what they can get away with, and people will pay $3.50 a gallon. They'll pay more, too. And they should. Gas should cost $6 a gallon, and if I was Preznit it would start costing that tomorrow. Of course, the difference would be tax, not profit; but you'd all pay it; if necessary you'd knife your brother or your next door neighbor to get to it, too. You're hooked.

yes, fnarf, what if we started by taking all the tax breaks and subsidies and channeled that money into research for the long run and mass transit in the short?

oh, that's right. everyone just HAS to have that CAR... and the one for the spouse... and the Kids too, or you WON'T hear the end of it, and...

"This is because I, myself, am retarded."

Well, that's certainly one explanation for why you would jaywalk into the middle of a busy street with traffic coming at you from both directions.

It's still no excuse though...

...which just shows the tiniest sliver of the grand theft that is the entire point of the Bush administration.

"why is anyone faulting exxon for what exxon does well. extract, refine and sell oil."

why did anyone fault hitler for what hitler did well. isolate, confine, and kill jews.

The argument is stupid in any context, but especially that pointed out by Andy. I'll fault Exxon for corrupting our government, polluting our air, and destroying our landscapes.

tt, comparisons to hitler and nazis really are poor in this case. 1. is exxon genociding a group of people? 2. is exxon declaring war on all neighboring companies.

i think the problem tt, is your own irrational hatred for corporations that fulfill a market demand. if you want to reduce the consumption of oil, keep the nazi analogies at home and actually do something about it yourself. buy some XOM take the proceeds adn donate to alternative research.

Those bastards! How dare they make money providing us with goods and services that we want? Let's punish them.
