Sports Sonics: FIRE SALE!
posted by February 21 at 15:04 PM
onEveryone must go! Yesterday, the Seattle Sonics said sayonara to Kurt Thomas, shipping him to San Antonio in exchange for a 2009 draft pick and two bit players (one injured, one who’s 32 and sat idle at San An). Today, minutes before the NBA’s trading deadline, ESPN reported that the team bid a fond adieu to Delonte West and Wally Szczerbiak, both of whom are off to Cleveland, in exchange for mega-stars Donyell Marshall, Ira Newble and Adrian Griffin. Ira’s the only decent hand as a result of all of this, and that’s not worth shouting about.
Having been to San Antonio, Cleveland and Oklahoma City, I’m not sure which players are better off with each respective deal, but I will say that the PI’s praise of Sonics general manager Sam Presti in light of recent trades comes off as pretty forced. The praise assumes that the Sonics can convert at least one of their three recently acquired first-round draft picks into wise trades in the near future, resulting in a team with at least a few sturdy veterans to assist the young talent. Or maybe the money we’ve skimmed off the top will give us room to make some awesome moves. Because the past year of moves has been so smart and optimistic, right? Shave Our Sonics, I guess.

They're not our Sonics anymore. Nice to see Brent Barry is back to circle the drain, though.
Oh my God, they're having a FIRE!... sale.
These deals are excellent. Presti is stockpiling draft picks and expiring contracts while getting rid of veterans who would be gone byt the time the team is competitive. They have 6 1st round picks in the next 3 years to add to Durant, Green, Collison, etc... Celebrate, Oklahoma City.
Actually I like these moves. Thomas and Szczerbiak are not part of this team's future, and unloading their contracts makes sense. You need salary cap space in today's NBA.
The question becomes: What does Presti do next? But so far these are the right moves.
I'm guessing the Spurs want Thomas to guard Shaq in the playoffs. Words fail me.
I think Presti is doing a good job. The kid has a plan. Oklahoma City is gonna be great in a couple years.
SAM!!! Go help them sell stuff!! Could be a job for you!!!! :)
It's a cogent strategy: trade out the current team, creating cap room, a stockpile of first round picks, and a couple years lottery position.
And make Seattle sorry we tried to enforce teh lease.
i am happy for kurt, delonte, & wally.
they deserve better than to have to play next to bob swift.
Yeah, they're acquiring as many draft picks as possible, which will pay off once the team arrives in OKC.
This is the exact reason that I don't want any type of Cleveland Browns type deal when it's all said and done. If we have to suffer with this team, we deserve the spoils when they are kicking ass in 5 years.
