Saying Someting

posted by on February 8 at 13:48 PM

Please, Seattle, open your ears and listen to David Adjaye.

I don’t agree with all he has to say (intimacy of any kind is not my sort of thing), but we should not have him clear out of our minds when the matter of a moment happens to be the future of this city.

The Museum of Contemporary Art/Denver is his first major American project.

"intimacy of any kind is not my sort of thing"

Massive amounts of rejection will do that to a man.

what came first, the rejection of intimacy or the lack of intimacy due to rejection?

That building is stupid.

If he was as good at architecting buildings as he is at manifesto-izing, he'd really have something. That's a terrible-looking building. And it's on a freeway ramp or something?

It's cool up close and inside, Poe and Fnarf. At least I thought so, and my parents were pretty excited to have it in Denver. It's not a freeway ramp, that's just the way the roads are in that part of town. It's a very neat little museum space. That picture doesn't do it any justice.

We need more pictures; this one makes it look like a big obsidian box.

Boxy, check.

Trapezoidal, check.

Shiny, check.

Will never be put in a picture and hung over anyone's mantelpiece, check.

Can't tell what it is and has no relation to nearby streetscape or landscape, check.

No symmetry, eschews being "beautiful," check.

What a wonderful piece of modern architecture! Another genius.

Bonus points for "innovative" use of obsidian-black instead of corugated steel so popular in Seattle's "fish cannery" or "shed motif."

As long as it's nothing like the new Denver Art Museum, which is basically impossible to walk through or display art in, I'm for it.

Look at this shit.
