I loved "Persepolis." Can you suggest any other nonfiction graphic novels?

In my old age I find I have no tolerance for monthly comics. Give me compilations only!

@3: Last year's An Anthology of Graphic Fiction, Cartoons, and True Stories edited by Ivan Brunetti is a good place to start. It offers a pretty wide breath of material and individual artists. Some notable graphic novel autobios that you might like:

Epileptic by David B.
Fun House by Alison Bechdel
Diary of a Teenage Girl by Phoebe Gloeckner
Palestine by Joe Sacco

And anything by Chris Ware is fantastic as are large portions of the Love and Rockets series penned by Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez. I would also highly recommend local artist Kazimir Strzepek's The Mourning Star, which is the first chunk of a comic fantasy epic.

#4 -- "Fun Home" -- remember, a Fun Home is not a Fun House.
But I second your praise for "Mourning Star", it's brilliant -- fantasy adventure without the twee baggage of fandom.

Those are all really great recommendations. I like Harvey Pekar, but people either like him or not. He's been doing some really different, political stuff lately.
Anyway, I'll try to cover the good new stuff as it comes out, too.
