Overwhelmed

posted by on February 9 at 8:40 AM

So… the passes are closed, which means we’re not going snowboarding. So… I guess the boyfriend and I will go caucus instead—and cancel other out. So… I go over to www.wa-democrats.org, and click on their caucus finder, where I find this message:

Due to extreme traffic volume, our caucus lookup tool may operate slowly, please try back at a later time if you are having difficulty.

The caucus tool isn’t working at all—and it wasn’t working last night either. I’ll check back later but I can’t imagine traffic volume is going to lessen as 1 PM approaches.

So… I live near 15th and Aloha. Anyone out there know where my caucus site is?

There's a couple different addresses.

Yours, I think, is on 15th Street.

Terry's is in Yakima. On Sunday.

Mine happens to be some Baptist church at 1634 19th Ave, which seemed to be the listed location for a lot of precincts. You could try just showing up there :)

Yep, just go to @1 link to the B Obama site. They will tell you where to go.

Why does the Barack site seem like you're signing up for their mailing list?

Try this one. No personal info needed. And quick!

If the Baptist church doesn't work out, I know a coworker's caucus location is at Victrola, so you could try that. Or at least end up with a tasty beverage. Of course, I have no idea where you live, so these are both just shots in the dark ...

The Dem's caucus finder just worked for me. A little slow, but no more than a couple of minutes.

Pd's link is much superior. The Barack Obama one couldn't figure (my address, at least) out, and just gives you the headquarters number to call.

Hey what the heck is NY Times thinking running a front page story on obama's drug use and how it was no big deal? Did they get bought out by Rupert Murdoch? Okay, so this isn't related to this thread...but I'm appalled!

Dan, you can also try http://www.kcdems.net or http://www.wa-democrats.org or just call the Obama office and they can help you.

PS: Your boyfriend and yourself won't necessarily cancel each other out, because either one of you could end up being that crucial extra person to sway one delegate toward a certain candidate. The way things are calculated it's all about proportion per precinct and not about the overall numbers.

And if you're at the corner of 15th and Aloha, you are most likely in 43-2018 which means you're at Lowell Elementary:
1058 E Mercer St., Seattle, WA 98102

There's a precinct map at: http://www.metrokc.gov/elections/gis/maps/leg/leg43.pdf

The page for Washington Democrats also has a link to the party sites for the counties. My county website has information, King County may have higher volume than the servers are adjusted for.

In the last few days the Obama campaign has had serious problems with getting accurate information to the rank and file.

Not to add to the confusion (really!) but the King County Dems have an excel spreadsheet, based on precinct location, that is totally contrary to what the google finders say.

I tend not to believe it--it puts my caucus location at Prospect Church, several miles out of the way.

The Obama site says I should go to Seattle Central.

The 41dems site says I should go to Mt. Zion Baptist.

The King County site says I should go to Meany Middle School (though this is my "polling place" not my caucus location, which I don't think the County has anything to do with.)

And, after 10 minutes, the WA Democrats site also says I should go to Seattle Central.

The Seattle Central's have it! Yay Democracy!

I already looked Dan up. He's at Stevens.

I actually loved the NYTimes article on Obama's drug use; seems similar to, oh, everyone I respect: light social use tailing off to Nicorette. Confirmed my decision to caucus for him.

Katrat @ 10
I'm afraid we better get used to it. Washington Post says Marion Barry to endorse Obama. That isn't going to help either. Once the Rove machine gets cranked up it will be hard to keep our heads above the shit, and that is regardless of which candidate gets the Dem nomination.

According to the 46th Dems map, Dan is at Lowell Elementary, Mercer and Federal (W of 11th). That depends on how close to 15th and Aloha he really is; precinct SEA 43-2018 extends a block north, east, and west, several blocks south. If he's really to the north of Prospect, he's in 2009, and caucuses at the Asian Art Museum. If he's to the east of 16th on Aloha, he's in 2021, and caucuses at Stevens Elementary, at 1242 18th, as Annie says (which seems likely, as she presumably has the real address).

41st Dems have old data, apparently.

Maybe the massive amount of negative attention this is attracting will help persuade the Dem politburo to fix this broken system.

@10 & 21
What I thought was strange about the article was that it seemed to imply that Obama was lying and in fact used a lot less drugs than he claimed!

You can also go to this site: http://wa-demchairs.org/blog/

It's a lot easier, and you can put in an address and get a google map

Dan, you don't necessarily cancel each other out. The math is complex, and there's a cutoff based on turnout and the number of delegates being sent. It may be that the arrival of both of you will make the numbers such that HRC ends up being non-viable in your precinct.

Wouldn't that be sweet irony?

@27 - i thought that too!

that article was complete schizophrenic. it was like first they did the research to see how many drugs he did, but then realized he hadn't done all _that_ many, so now they're saying he played it up for drama, which means he wasn't a delinquent then - he's a disingenuous shill. also it wasn't too hard to see that the writer thought obama's move from oxy to columbia was motivated much more by opportunism than anything else. the times's reporting on obama has been very suspect.

Dan,

Do you know your precinct number? It should be on your voter registration card. Take that number and look it up here:

http://www.43rddems.org/Documents/Locations.xls

Easy.

Unfortunately, "15th and Aloha" too vague because precincts are so tiny, but I can see why you might not want to put your address on SLOG :)

You are signing up for a mailing list on their site. I RSVP'd for their thing at the Key Arena yesterday and today I've got some campaign email. Too bad the RSVP didn't get me in the door :-)

I'm imagining the Dan & Boyfriend Debates being oddly similar to what a Hilary-McCain debate would be like:

Dan/Hilary: "We need a candidate that will get us out of this Iraq mess!"

Boyfriend/McCain: "Excuse me, but didn't YOU support this war?"
