No Perfect Season

posted by on February 3 at 19:28 PM

NY wins, 17-14. The Patriots go home with one loss for the season. It was a damn good game.

Now football goes back into hibernation. Thankfully, baseball will be here soon.

Great game. Lots of action.

What they said. A good, no-nonsense football game, two strong teams going at it. No forced drama, minimal referee action. I enjoyed this game from start to end.

You say the Giants won the game - but which team do the youth think won the game?

I honestly would have been happy with either team winning. Whether it was the Pat's capping off footballs greatest season, or the Giants achieving one of the greatest upsets in history.

However, I bet on the Giant's and some other things and this result won me some monies. So yeehaw!

Obviously the Patriots have more experience but the Giants are more interested in change.

who else thought the salesgenie.com ads were very offensive?

@7, Agreed. There was a whole block with the Chinese pandas and medicine men that was pretty 1950ish.

Really none of the commercials made we want to buy any of the products. Especially the Etrade commercial with the baby that seemed to insinuate that their product made you throw up.

The real loser in this game: objectivism (see the McSweeney item below). The winner: Kerouac.

Yes, the salesgenie ads were horrifically offensive. Besides the Chinese pandas, there was one with an Indian man with a stereotypical "Apu" accent.

I can't remember such an awful year for ads in my life. Since when were beer commercials so ridiculously boring? Thankfully, I also can't remember such a nailbiter of a Super Bowl game. Good stuff.

I wasn't offended, but I'm surprised those ads aired. But it's nothing new for Madison Avenue.

@7: Yeah, I'm not sure how multiple someones decided they were ok to air.

@9: That car made me more excited than it should have. It was fucking hot.

What everyone else said about the ads (although the Bud Lite ads were kinda funny).

Weirdest ad: The Doritos spot where the guy in the mouse suit beat the stuffing out of the other guy. I replayed it a couple times and it made me go "Huh?" every time. Although tomorrow I bet I will think it was hysterical for some odd reason.

I missed most of the ads -- did lots of dudes get kicked in the balls? That's the part I like.

Everytime I get excited about football, the whistle blows and everything stops for another four or five minutes. I grew a beard in the last four minutes of the fourth quarter.

@19:

Justin Timberlake's balls were repeatedly introduced, violently, to a parking meter.

I liked that ad. I also liked -- probably loved -- the Will Ferrell Budweiser ad. He's what passes for seditious today, and I kinda like my sedition.

@7 & 9:

Congrats. That ad was stupid. Worse, it was trying really hard to be controversial, because they were smart enough to know that you can double or triple your exposure if your ad gets discussed in the news. Your reactions are exactly what those ad people were hoping for.

Maybe call some talk shows tomorrow and say the company's name a whole lot while expressing your outrage?

Gotta love the slog. A post about the Superbowl, and most of you guys comment on the commercials.

What a fucking game.

Yeah it was. It was more fun to watch with a Bostonian who literally went apeshit after that last touchdown. In fact, it touched off a fight the likes of which I haven't seen in some time. Greatest super bowl ever.

Were you guys watching the same game I was? I was struggling to stay awake until the fourth quarter.

As a lifelong Giants fan, I enjoyed the game immensely. I was worried that it was only we G-men fans that thought it was a great game, apparently it was just plain GREAT.
I admire the Pats team, cheating scoundrels that they are. They had an amazing offense, but they were made mundane by the Giants defense and their game plan. I didn't expect the Giants to finish on top, but as impressive as their defense was all game it would have been a shame if the Pats squeeked it out in the end.

On the ads, the Coke add near the beginning with What is Love and Chris Katan at the end was pretty good.

The eTrade ad with the talking baby and the Clown was pretty funny. 'I wasn't anticipating how creepy it would be' LOL.

LOTS of really bad ads though. Sadly everyone remembers the SalesGenie ads and most importantly, their name - that was the whole point.

Great Game though, WOO HOO!

It was the football gods. It was retribution for cheating against the Jets. Talk about cheating just for the hell of it.

How else do you explain Eli Manning not being picked off in that final drive? Even the pass to Burress I was shaking my head thinking that it was a floater and a sure pick. Escaping the sack and then Tyree catching the ball with his head - what?

I just love that Belichick got so out-coached. I don't think a 4 quarter blitz game plan is sane, but the Giants executed one and the genuis could not adjust, for 4 quarters? The advantage the Giants had on both lines, it probably wouldn't have mattered.

Still, one team was prepared and well-coached, and one team showed up to get their trophy. If you were riveted by the fact that the cocky Pats that everyone picked to win had lost hope by the fourth quarter, then you don't have any interest in football.

Nonetheless, Brady is still the best QB bar none. I have no respect for that stunt with the cast, but his balls were melon-size last night.

Brady's injury was legit, because he was definitely hobbling on his dropbacks, and his throws were falling short.

If that Manning scramble and that helmet catch by Tyree isn't replayed on all-time highlight films, like the Immaculate Reception is, there is no justice in the world, because that catch has to be, given the context, at least one of the 5 greatest NFL plays of all time. It wasn't just a great play, it was a great play the Giants absolutely needed, on a drive in which they absolutely had to score.

Monumental upset, and I've even stand to place it up there with the Joe Namath Super Bowl win in terms of context. No one gave the Giants a chance in hell of winning this game, and they did, in dramatic fashion.

I'm glad I watched. I almost didn't.

I wanted to see the Pats win. Let the haters rejoice!

Bill, kick the goddamned field goal! Tie up the game! Was something wrong with Gostowski that I missed?

Gotta give it up to the Giants. They dominated the line of scrimmage. I feel good for Strahan, Plax, and even Eli and Coughlin. They deserved the victory.
