The main rationale for people opposing gay marriage is a religious one. In Cuba, while many people are "privately Catholic", the government is officially non-religious.
The US is also officially non-religious but religious people make up the majority of those in government. It's a shame that our government doesn't take to heart the premise of separation of church and state.
@1 true. but maybe they want to attract more gay european couples who might want to retire to the island. Hell, I'm only 28. I'd love to visit Cuba before Castro dies.
If Reinaldo Arenas was alive today, he'd probably think he was living in a dream to see Cuba allow gay men to live their lives together as a couple and want to move back to Cuba.
I wonder when the rest of the Latin American nations will wake up and allow gay marriage/civil unions. I wouldn't be surprised if Venuezuela's next to do this.
and i'm fantasizing about how many gay/bi men are in the Cuban military :-p mmmmm que rico... :-D
@ #7, I don't know if Castro himself has had a change of heart. His niece wrote an impressive pro queer article about four years ago. It looks like the leaders listened to her.
The right wing will use this of course, but many Eruopean nations adopted same sex marriage before Cuba.

apres mois: Uruguay has aproved civil unions a few years back. In Argentina civil unions are only legal in Buenos Aires, we're hoping for more. Buenos Aires is quite gay friendly. Weren't you coming here sometime, Dan?

Yeah, but ... but ... but Cuba's communist. That's gotta count for something. Doesn't it? Domino theory ... and stuff.
I am sure Fox News is going to cover this in a "fair and balanced" approach....
Is general public opinion very kind to gays and lesbians in that part of the world?

I've been to Cuba a couple times in the last couple years and I'd say at least in Havana public opinion is very gay-friendly.
Great, more ammo for the social cons to use against gay marriage.
Castro finally got over his homophobia, I assume.

This is obviously why we still have an embargo on Cuba -- the gays might set sail and try to take us over.

Most Caribbean nations are virulently anti-gay. Jamaica is the most violently homophobic nation on earth, maybe even more than Iran.
Which all goes to show that you accidentally end up with tolerance when you don't let the Christian Missionaries run riot in your Worker's Paradise.

Now if only Cuba would give gays freedom of speech, assembly, and religion.
