good grief! now that the SLOG world knows that Jubilation T Cornball can afford to spend that kind of money on a painting, he should be very, very popular...

#9 It depends on what kind of contract the artist signed with the gallery; in many cases there's a clause that allows the publication of images for promotion and marketing purposes but more importantly, I doubt the artist is very upset since they just made at least a grand off this deal...

I was all set to give Jube shit for spending $1900 on a painting, and then I realized that I've got knives (Randalls) worth more than that.

#9, #11 is correct. The artist may have signed a promotional waiver allowing reproduction of the work. My late other half was an artist and this type of agreement was not at all uncommon.

I often signed agreements on his behalf from galleries all over the world that held shows of his work in order to get advance promotion out. The agreements usually allowed them "reasonable reproduction rights" (RRR) to use images of the work to promote the show. RRR is a nebulous term, but it never caused any issues for us. Most people exercise good sense in what's reasonable.

Jubilation is lucky. It is a stunning painting. $1,900 sounds reasonable all things considered.

@11: Well, true, but the point being, completely reproducing the work in a mass medium led to someone wanting the physical object.

It helped sales, not hurt them.
