good grief! now that the SLOG world knows that Jubilation T Cornball can afford to spend that kind of money on a painting, he should be very, very popular...

I've always said it, Slog always had the potential to be another craigslist, only artsier. I have a barely used 1982 mountain bike for sale, with glow-in-the-dark stickers artfully placed on the frame by a real Northwest artist. Just 1200 bucks! Contact sale-98727831459823@slog.thestranger.com

I'm still looking for Daniel Plainview in this painting.

Can it scroll up and down on his wall? That's what really made it for me.

It's all true.

And to think, for that same amount of money, I could have bought Mr. Poe, instead...

I'm looking forward to my new painting and want to reiterate my thanks to Jen.

most heartwarming Slog story of the year so far

@6, Mr Poe would go for half of that price.

Let's not forget that it was almost certainly a violation of the artists' copyright to post the whole image in large form on this website.

And send a memo to the RIAA and MPAA.

Nice! I'd ask you to invite me and the missus over to admire it, but I'd just spill red wine on it.

#9 It depends on what kind of contract the artist signed with the gallery; in many cases there's a clause that allows the publication of images for promotion and marketing purposes but more importantly, I doubt the artist is very upset since they just made at least a grand off this deal...

I was all set to give Jube shit for spending $1900 on a painting, and then I realized that I've got knives (Randalls) worth more than that.

#9, #11 is correct. The artist may have signed a promotional waiver allowing reproduction of the work. My late other half was an artist and this type of agreement was not at all uncommon.

I often signed agreements on his behalf from galleries all over the world that held shows of his work in order to get advance promotion out. The agreements usually allowed them "reasonable reproduction rights" (RRR) to use images of the work to promote the show. RRR is a nebulous term, but it never caused any issues for us. Most people exercise good sense in what's reasonable.

Wow so how big is it, anyway?

@8 the painting could go for twice!

@12 is that a threat?!?!

:)

Jubilation is lucky. It is a stunning painting. $1,900 sounds reasonable all things considered.

@15, hardly - they're safe queens. There are three Randalls in the frickin Smithsonian for Chrissakes.

Does this mean Jubilation is buying drinks at tonight's SLOG gathering at Moe?

Seriously though - that's a lovely painting, and I'm shocked at the low price. A veritable bargain! Congrats Jubilation!

My Dear Non,

It is 76 x 22.

I'm just happy to think that from now on this will be known as "the Cornball Davidson".

@18, 21: It's Thursday, not tonight.

Congrats on the painting, JTC. It's stunning, and will surely impress any houseguests - Fnarfian, Poeish, or otherwise.

@23: Hmmmm...something tells me you know me :-) Otherwise, how would you know I own a Jim Blanchard sticker "painting" of Charles Bronson, hmmm??? Come clean!

@24: MR. POE!!! That's so funny because I was actually thinking about putting it over my bed LOL Maybe someday we two shall lay there, entangled in blissful, post-coital repose. Or not.

I wish someone would buy my art randomly like that, instead of it getting dusty on a gallery wall in Baltimore :D

Is Jubilation T. Cornball straight and single?

Posted by catnextdoor | February 13, 2008 11:09 AM
34

@11: Well, true, but the point being, completely reproducing the work in a mass medium led to someone wanting the physical object.

It helped sales, not hurt them.

Ergo, the lesson for the entertainment industry.
