Slog - Comments on Jen Graves, Art Dealer

A week ago today, Jen Graves posted this oil-on-linen painting by Linda Davidson, Genie, and the post got a ton of comments, including: "Oooooh I like that!" and "That's stunning" and "Papa like" and "Bad ass!" Jubilation T. Cornball weighed in: "Wow. I could see this being done by a 19th Century English landscape artist. It's got Industrial Revolution vibes all over it. And it's gorgeous." You remember the one, right? The day after it was posted, Jubilation T. Cornball posted another comment to the thread: "At lunch today, this I went to the gallery and, I am pleased to...

I've always said it, Slog always had the potential to be another craigslist, only artsier. I have a barely used 1982 mountain bike for sale, with glow-in-the-dark stickers artfully placed on the frame by a real Northwest artist. Just 1200 bucks!

#9 It depends on what kind of contract the artist signed with the gallery; in many cases there's a clause that allows the publication of images for promotion and marketing purposes but more importantly, I doubt the artist is very upset since they just made at least a grand off this deal...

Comment by Wolf

#9, #11 is correct. The artist may have signed a promotional waiver allowing reproduction of the work. My late other half was an artist and this type of agreement was not at all uncommon.

I often signed agreements on his behalf from galleries all over the world that held shows of his work in order to get advance promotion out. The agreements usually allowed them "reasonable reproduction rights" (RRR) to use images of the work to promote the show. RRR is a nebulous term, but it never caused any issues for us. Most people exercise good sense in what's reasonable.
