Islam Means Peace

posted by on February 12 at 12:04 PM

Danish police said Tuesday they have arrested three people suspected of plotting to kill one of the 12 cartoonists behind the Prophet Muhammad drawings that sparked a deadly uproar in the Muslim world two years ago. Two Tunisians and a Dane of Moroccan origin were arrested in pre-dawn raids in western Denmark, the police intelligence agency said.

The Dane was suspected of violating Danish terror laws but likely would be released after questioning as the investigation continues, said Jakob Scharf, the head of the PET intelligence service. The two Tunisians would be expelled from Denmark, he said.

I can't stand the guy who does Prickly City, but you don't see me trying to get him killed...I used to scream curses at Johnny Hart's BC before the old fool retired, but I never firebombed his house. Maybe it's just me.

We need to bomb them assholes into a sense of humour. Oh wait...

Looks like another fine day to wear my t-shirt with a picture of Mohammed Ali wearing a turban bomb on it...

Piece motherfuckers.

Yawn.

How many other crimes were committed in Denmark yesterday? Ones with no religious justification?

The worst bit is where the Danish Muslim spokesman urges muslims to take news of the arrest calmly. So that means that a natural reaction to arresting terrorists is outrage? How dare they not let a couple of Tunisian wackos not kill the cartoonist. If that's the way the spokesman thinks, then maybe Denmark is justified in taking an increasingly hard line against N African resident aliens.

I think we should just all live in Fear.

Especially those of us who doodle.

Hey, watch me pull Mohammed out of a hat, Rocky!

@ 4: FYI, the Stranger did run the cartoons back when the story first broke, unlike the other fucking media appeasers.

It's great how gleefully people here jump all over a chance to indulge in some old-fashioned cultural hatred and racism once it's been sanctioned by the blog's racist editor.

I don't understand your inference. Since the people who say things like "Islam means peace" are moderate or liberal Muslims, are you trying to say that all Muslims are radical jihadists and that claiming otherwise is a lie? Are you just trying to find a parallel for your "You will know we are Christians..." titles? Do you think that liberals are too accepting of Muslims?

I will start supporting moderate and liberal Muslims when I see them march in the Gay Pride Parade on 4th Avenue.

I will start supporting moderate and liberal Muslims once I see them openly protest the autrocities that members of their own religon commit.

I will start supporting moderate and liberal Muslims once they stand up for equality of women through out the world.

When that happens I will support those moderate and liberal Muslims.

oh, come on, bing, it's not like the Archbishop of Canterbury tried to force the Brits to accept Sharia and impose the veil on UK citizens ...

Oops, nope, that actually happened.

@16, great point, except for the part about his being in a position to "force" anyone in the UK to do anything. Thank God antiMuslim reactionaries are all over his case, though, trying to force *his* defrocking for making a speech: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/12/world/europe/12canterbury.html?ref=europe

Hey TSIGRO,

I don't give a good Allah damn what your race or culture is. If you think your imaginary friend demands that you kill someone who makes fun of your imaginary friend, then you need to be arrested, denounced, and excoriated in the most strident and public fashion possible. I'm so sick and fucking tired of people hiding behind their religion to justify their own felonious, violent desires and fears. Your imaginary friend tells you to hurt yourself and you're over 18? Fine. Your imaginary friend tells you to fuck with someone else? Not fine. You say your friend isn't imaginary? Prove it or shut up.

Right the fuck on Dan...

"Multiculturalism" is destroying this country by fracturing our society. This countries deplorable education system is creating little lemmings that in the name of being tolerant, would let people rob them, shit on their plate, and rape their spouse.

Yes, hyperbole, but pretty much true.

Spc. Rory Dunn lay in Bed 32, Ward 58, on the fifth floor of Walter Reed Army Medical Center, recovering after a roadside bomb in Iraq exploded and crushed his forehead from ear to ear. he lay in the neuroscience unit, struggling to recover from one of the worst traumatic brain injuries doctors had seen. ” Dude, you look good,” said Dr. Stephen Rouse, who restored Dunn’s skull using a plastic insert designed by a 3-D computer program. He wears an eye patch to cover the socket that was left empty when one of his eyes was blown out. He has a hearing aid in one ear and is profoundly deaf in the other. He has no sense of smell. He still has pieces of shrapnel in his brain.

@16: the archbishop of canterbury "forced" the brits to accept sharia law and "imposed the veil" on all UK citizens? either that guy's a lot more powerful than i realized, or you've been getting your news from Freerepublic and andrewsullivan.

#12, you have to read his earlier rambling, nonsensical post on this topic to get the full understanding of his ignorance.

I sort of stopped paying attention to Savage on any kind of intellectual level when he kept saying that he and his boyfriend's caucus votes would "cancel each other out". Cute, but wrong.

@15 - Yes, yes, and yes. Right on the money. I really wish they would speak out, so that the average person would be able to make the connection that not all Muslims are radical jihadists. Calling all moderate Muslims - where are you?

@11 - Anyone who conspires to kill someone for drawing a goddamn newspaper cartoon deserves to be mocked relentlessly, no matter what his religion.

The reason why people say "Islam" means peace has to do with the way roots work in Arabic words. In general, Arabic words are triliteral, i.e. they consist of three consonants.

S-L-M

By sprinkling in different patterns of vowels (and prefixes and suffixes), you build different words off of one root.

SaLaaM ("peace")
iSLaM ("submission" [to God])
muSLiM ("submitter" [to God])
aSLaMa ("to surrender")

(Compare J-H-D, JiHaD and muJaHiDin.)

It's not unlike patterns in English such as sing-sang-sung. (Hebrew works the same way as Arabic, actually.)

So when people say Islam means peace, my take is that they're kind of being overly literal--and not quite accurate, since Islam means actually "submission to God." But it is related to the word for "peace," that is true. (The original or fundamental meaning of S-L-M is "to be complete.")

We could just as easily say that "Christianity" means "greasy" by the same logic.

@25 - that's what he proposed. A lot of Anglicans (I was confirmed as one) and Episcopalians (etc) are steaming mad about that, actually.

@19, if you (or Dan) don't give a "good God damn" what the race or culture is of the three people arrested, why is the post titled "Islam Means Peace"?

@27, why are 'moderate or reasonable' (or any) members of a particular race or culture obligated to justify their existence if some of their number commit a crime?

@32 - Because ostensibly, if members of their faith are carrying out actions (i.e. honor killings) that they are appalled by and/or believe are heretical to Islam as they understand it, being moderate/liberal Muslims and all they might at least be indignant enough to say "Hey, how dare you carry out these acts in the name of Allah?" You'd think they'd care about something like that if they were at all strong in their faith.

This isn't a race or culture we're talking about, it's a religion, and if people were carrying out horrific acts in the name of your god, wouldn't you say something? I guess I just don't understand why moderate/liberal Muslims are so quiet about this shit, especially given the prominence of radical Islam in world affairs. Why sit back and let a bunch of radical jihadists destroy the reputation of the faith you hold dear?

#15, you make good points, however, no one is asking Dan to "support" Islam.

Dan's "argument" seems to be "people say Islam means peace, but all the teevee tells me is about Muslims that want to kill people, so that must be what Islam is"

Or something... given the lack of substance to this post one can't really be too sure, but it seems clear this is what Dan is oh-so-cleverly trying to imply. Dan's main MO (Every child, You will know we are Christians, Islam means Peace) seems to be choosing a sarcastic headline, then cherry picking "ironic" news stories to reinforce the sarcasm.

Actual statistical or journalistic analysis optional, of course.

About a year ago Iran said to protest western hypocrasy they would hold a Holocaust Cartoon Contest(although cartoons re the Bosnian aka Muslim holocaust were not included! It really proved a lot. Muslims, many themselves people of color (such as a professor in Canada who was an Afrian immigrant) participated. Guess what? No violence. When the President of Iran, who organized and gave a cash prize for the best one came to America, still no violence. It is not racist or Islamaphobic to say nowhere in this world can someone not live in fear if they publically speak their mind and Muslims don't like it- Muslim citizens have themselves have made this a fact.

#15: yes! finally i can get rid of this crap leftover from last century:

"In Germany, they came first for the Communists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist;

"And then they came for the trade unionists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist;

"And then they came for the Jews, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew;

And then . . . they came for me . . . And by that time there was no one left to speak up."
