Huge Turnout

posted by on February 9 at 14:45 PM

People keep sending me texts and photos that reaffirm what I experienced at my caucus site on Capitol Hill: Turnout for today’s Democratic caucuses is huge.

Here’s a picture sent from Nova High School:

scaled.FixoNova.jpg

Here’s one from Stevens Elementary:

scaled.TimStevens.jpg

Here’s one from Lowell Elementary:

scaled.LowellElementary.jpg

And here’s a representative photo from the happy chaos at my site at Seattle Central Community College (as opposed to the apparently grumpy chaos at Dan’s more well-heeled and too-busy-for-messy-Democracy site).

scaled.SCCC1.JPG

Tells us about the results at your site: Here’s our north Seattle thread. Here’s our south Seattle thread. And here’s our beyond Seattle thread.

And if you have caucus chaos photos, the StrangrFlickr pool awaits.

The 43rd was breaking pretty heavily for Obama when I left. My precinct had a split of 23-7 or thereabouts Obama/Clinton.

"Too busy for messy democracy"? You know what hacked me off? It had nothing to do with the "messiness" of the process. It was that it was nearly impossible for me to participate with my disabled child who is in a wheelchair who couldn't tolerate the noise and crowded confines of the school gymnasium. I suppose I could have gotten a babysitter...if I had access to one or the money to pay for one...
So, yeah...I'm with Dan. Let's do this differently next time?

Dammit Bellevue Ave... I hoped you'd be *our* Bellevue ave and went to Melrose Terrace Apts. Now I know you are part of the "Lower Bellevue Ave" crowd with your fancy City Market and hipster bars.

PS: Congrads... we still have Top Pot and you dont though.

If you were one of the Melrose Terrace caucus-goers, I salute your patience & passion. It was hot, stuffy and exciting. In the end:

43-2545: Obama 5, Clinton 2
43-2548: Obama 6, Clinton 0 (no delegate selected)
43-2928: Obama 3, Clinton 1, Kucinich 1

sorry for the repost on 2 precincts but it all felt like a big community meeting. remember, your vote was what won this caucus. See you in November at the polls!

43-2041 had its caucus location moved from the Capitol Hill Public Library (Harvard & Republican) to the Prospect Church (19th & Prospect). Of the people that made the twenty minute walk and navigated the chaotic lines (only 36 of us):
Obama 4 delegates
Clinton 1 delegate

We could have done this at the Henry Library? Grrrrr....

The other thing with 2041 is that the Google precinct finders kept telling a bunch of people that they were actually in 43-2040.

I wonder how many people showed up at the Lowell school, by mistake.

Be happy you didn't meet at the Capitol Hill library. In 2004, the turnout there was so overwhelming that precincts met in the open air, basement parking garage where acoustics were terrible and it was cold and they had no chairs. 2008 would have been worse. It was moved for a good reason.

Wow, that Stevens photo is of my precinct. I think I was sitting behind the girl who took it.

"(as opposed to the apparently grumpy chaos at Dan’s more well-heeled and too-busy-for-messy-Democracy site)"

Wait, what? Does that Stevens photo look like grumpy chaos to you? It was fine. People were a little warm but there was little tension in the gym. I think Dan was just pissed he couldn't go play in the snow.

Was 2004 the new library, or the old one?

I'm getting old and forgetful, I'm afraid.

I still like the idea to caucus at Sun Liquor.
