It’s Ladies Night!

posted by on February 26 at 16:08 PM

Every Tuesday is Ladies Night. At the gun range. At yee ole Wade’s in Bellevue. From 10 am-10 pm, ladies get half-price lanes, and free rentals. You can rent a little handgun, or something more like this gun:

free-rentals.jpg

You can also bring your own.

gun-butt.jpg

You buy their ammo. Small targets are four-for-a-dollar, large targets, a buck a piece. You’re not allowed to draw faces on them.

Some girlfriends and I have been going, pretty frequently, since Christmas. For me, joining this new club was partially (unfortunately) inspired by THIS, but also by learning to shoot THIS, in Michigan, on New Years Day.

I hoped I’d suddenly look and feel like THIS woman after blasting through a bunch of boxes of brass, but instead I’m still terrified of doing THIS. And I’m too skittish to pick up anything bigger than a .22 in the loud chaotic range environment.

Also, for anyone who’s interested, here’s the HOW WAS IT? video I filmed at Wade’s last Tuesday. The lady with the customized leopard print fanny pack, that she carts her WWI-era .45 around in, is pretty much the most interesting person I’ve talked to in a very very long time.

If you're willing to do a ladies/gay men gun night, I'll pull the Walther P5 out of the safe for an evening....

Guns only make you feel powerful.

I love guns. I'll never be ashamed to admit that.

And nothing makes me smile more than a chick with a gun. Especially if she's pointing it at me. You go, gurl!

In actual practice, most women smaller than 5'6" are more likely to have their guns used against them than to successfully use them.

Without a lot of training.

(on the other hand, women tend to be better shots, as were the ones I trained in the Army)

Guns are not the answer if you are likely to freeze or fumble them. They're more likely to be misused by your kids or family members.

Good on you for learning to master a useful tool.

You don't have to drive all the way to Bellevue though. Our very own Seattle Police Athletic Association runs a range down by Boeing Field. And you get to be outdoors!

@6

That's why they're practicing, Will. That way you'll have five bullets in your head before you can even THINK about touching them.

I've always felt strange being a liberal who thinks guns are awesome. I really aught to head on out there sometime.

What are the laws re: carrying guns in your car up there in WA (Ok as long as ammo is separate?)? I'm all for you responsible folk learning to use your firearms, but be careful between the range and your house!

Next time you go, you should print up your own targets. I print all sorts of crazy shit when I go to the range, it makes it a lot more fun. Just don't print pics of the president...some range people frown on that.

Sam's in Everett has a great full sized picture of a guy in a muscle shirt with a mullet you can get from them. They have a lot better targets than Wade's.

It's good to see people out there shooting and not being paranoid about guns. Keep it up with the .22 until you're comfortable to move up and don't be afraid to ask people for advice. Gun people are usually surprisingly helpful and nice.

Dougf @ 18:
You need a Concealed Carry Permit to carry it in your car or on your person in Washington. You don't need a permit if you only keep it in your home or fixed place of business.

goddammit i love kelly o. she's bad ass.

keep it up--by summer you'll be slinging 180 grain 30-06 without pause.

p.s. when it gets warmer out, try going to an outdoor range (Kitsap Rifle and Revolver Club is good--really friendly and you can bring your own targets).

it is not as loud as indoor and you can move up to rifles and targets at 100-200 yards, which is more fun than hand guns, imho. can't rent there, though.

Ed @ 20

That's not right at all. You can carry a gun in a car if it's unloaded and secured (read trunk) without a carry permit. There are also laws on the books that allow you to carry guns too and from sporting events, like shooting or hunting, regardless.

The bottom line is if you've got a permit, carry it on your person concealed. If you don't, unload it and put it in the trunk and you're golden.

Posted by Smegmalicious | February 26, 2008 5:52 PM

@20 - incorrect - you are allowed to carry unloaded firearms in your vehicle in Washington State (you can also carry a loaded rifle in many locations w/o a CWP, as well).

Hooters and heaters - two of my favorite things....

@24 - that's what gun racks are for.

Remember, unloaded, people!

(and actually, time to draw and aim is a lot longer than you think, and pistols are a lot less accurate than most people realize)

Remarkable. A post about guns without elenchos calling me names. Maybe his meds have kicked in. Anyway, when you decide to do a night at the range, let me know. I'll fly in for that.

@26, while you're not wrong, you're not right. Time to draw, aim and shoot, in the right hands, can be measured in the hundredths of a second. I know, been there, done that.

Many years ago I owned a (used) truck that had a gun rack.

I kept my umbrella on it.

That was great. Thank you Kelly for a slog post about ladies and guns and no mention of the elections at all. I love you ;)

I prefer Airsoft myself. But I wouldn't mind trying to fire a real gun down a range at some point in my life.

Will! Will--that's not what he was implying. There are competition shooters that can, indeed draw (from a holster) and fire in that time. I saw it on cable, once.

For me, it takes me about 45 minutes to an hour to draw and fire, because I need to find the key to my safe, then find the slip of paper where the combination is written down, pull the thing out, inspect to see if it hasn't rusted shut, then find a place that's not illegal to use it.

How fast or slow one's "reaction time" is depends on all the extraneous limitations one puts into the process.

Here's a question that's been bothering me for a little bit: why do so few states have reciprocity with Washington's concealed-carry laws?

my favorite part about Wade's is that it's proprietors are Asian. and also watching young daughters going shooting with their fathers (in a nostalgic way, not a pedophil-ic way)

also, whoever was holding that gun while shooting, i was scared for you. i'm pretty sure you put your non-trigger hand on the butt of the gun with your palm

also also, be careful with renting guns, i know Wade's has a habit of not cleaning their guns, ie, jamming, ie scurred shitless when it misfires
