Wonder how many suicide prevention counselors this money could fund?

I hear Ann Rule's still around ...

How about just painting yellow warning stripes on the sidewalk so you know if you're still above any hapless pedestrians below when you go over the rail.

Presumably in this permissive age, no one gives a 5hit if you hit the water . . .

Can't we just offer a program where we give them fare for a ticket to San Francisco? It's soooo much cooler to jump off the Golden Gate Bridge...

Turns out jumpers always realize right after letting go that all their old problems instantly dwindle to zero significance, and they realize that they only problem with their life that matters is the fact that they just let go of the bridge.

Just as you would suspect.

yes, let's ruin a phenomenal bridge because a handful of people jump annually. why not just level queen anne hill and re-grade aurora from the zoo down to the canal? cos then no one could ever jump. i mean, if we're going to waste oodles of cash, why not go big?

Speaking of suicides, some dumbass decided to end it all under the Empire Builder tonight in Carkeek Park. They're still holding the train, waiting for the coroner to show up to verify that this person is indeed dead.

250 people kept waiting for five hours because a selfish, self-absorbed ass can't just check into a hotel room and swallow some pills.

People assume suicide prevention is good, why?

#6 catalina vel-duray, it's not so easy to get effective pills. I think the ethical thing to do is to make fast-acting barbiturates freely available. There will be more suicides that way, but preventing someone who wants to commit suicide from doing it - and who's serious enough to get the pills - is just contributing to more suffering. Forced life is basically slavery. Yeah, I wouldn't support public money for this.

I prefer target circles, painted in red, with little hearts in the center pierced by arrows.

After all, it's VDay.

oh, and to all my friends near the Montlake Bridge and the Ballard Bridge ... sorry for increasing the number of people jumping from your bridges ...

Not my idea.

There's still the Magnolia Bridge and the rather high Low Bridge in West Seattle, plus the always fabulous Jose Rizal Bridge. But, wait, anti-jump barriers could be coming to those vantage points soon, too.

People who are committed to kill themselves will always find a way -- it's technically pretty easy.

There are a lot of people who go through a temporary mental health crisis, though. These are the people who kill themselves from a big, visible, pedestrian-friendly bridge known as a "suicide bridge." You or a loved one could be one of these people one day.

In Japan, if you jump in front of a train on the big, important lines, the train company will sue your family for big money. One of the many reasons why I love Japan.

@11 - you could always jump from a 40-story building downtown.

Better to use the money to increase counselling services - adding the phones on the bridge was a good idea - this eyesore is not.

I also love how the suicide prevention group is like "sure it's ugly but it saves lives people DON'T YOU CARE ABOUT SAVING LIVES??" and goes on to compare it to bicycle helmets. Yeah let's get rid of all beauty and fun as long as we're SAFE!
