Gay Student Shot in California

posted by on February 13 at 11:24 AM

An openly gay 15 year-old student was shot yesterday by another student. From the LA Times:

Some students said the victim, whose name was not disclosed, sometimes wore makeup and feminine jewelry and had declared himself gay. They said he was frequently taunted by other boys and had been involved in an argument with the alleged shooter, an eighth-grader who also was not named…. During the lunchtime argument, one of the boys shouted at Tuesday’s victim, “You better watch your back,” said one student who witnessed the encounter….

Six hours after the shooting, 13-year-old Mariah Thompson emerged with her mother from the locked-down school. Mariah had been interviewed by detectives, along with the two dozen other students in the school’s computer lab, where the English class was meeting at the time of the attack.

“He didn’t deserve it,” she said, crying. She said she was one of the wounded boy’s few friends, a confidant he trusted with stories about others making life at school miserable for him. “I would always tell him, ‘Don’t let them get to you,’ ” she said.

We need to give gay students the right to Bear Arms and Twink Grenades.

This shit makes me more angry than the Capitol Hill attacks, probably because it's the type of school environment I grew up in in the small city South. I was a skinny effeminate kid, at least now I can fight back. I think we should make No Child Left Behind mandate screenings of "Billy Elliot" in all 6th Grade classrooms. Rarrrgh!

Man, this reminds of how glad I am that I'm not in high school anymore. Very, very sad....

This was bound to happen eventually. Maybe this will get press because it was a shooting and not a routine beating. Perhaps now anti-gay harrassment in schools will be taken a tiny tad more seriously. I just hope the kid doesn't die. Fuckers.

Where is the outrage from all those liberal Christians and liberal Muslims?

Will we hear condemnation for this act of violence from the pulpit this Sunday? Wait, I know the answer to that one already.

BTW, when you live in a nation that is lead by the intolerant we should not be shocked this sort of violence happens.

This is FAR worse than what took place in Jenna MISS. WHERE is the outrage?

Depressing. It's too bad the shooter didn't off himself, Columbine style, and save the future from his adult self.

Here we thought the kids at Mt. Si had it bad. I guess it only gets worse.

Fuck, that poor kid. I'm just glad guns weren't readily available when/where I grew up; I could handle being punched, strangled, tripped, burned with acid left on my locker, and held down and force-fed dry leaves. Being shot, probably not.

Where in the story does it say that he was shot because he was gay? Perhaps the argument was about something other than the victim's sexuality.

whatever residual happiness I had that it was Wednesday/PayDay is now gone and replaced by sadness and depression.

hopefully he survives and hopefully the parents find him an alternative school to go to...

We had guns all over the house. Hell, I had my own handgun. I was also bullied relentlessly from K-11. Every time I see one of these stories I think of how many times as a kid I fantasized about blowing a few assholes away.

This is totally different. I never expected anyone to shoot ME. This is something a lot less defendable.

Wow, I bet the shooter feels like a real man now. Hope he enjoys his time in PMITA juvenile hall...

Disgusting. I hope the victim recovers completely, and I hope he has a wonderful, productive life while his shooter languishes in mediocrity (or prison).

@5: My outrage is right here, you piece of shit.

Can a juvenile be charged with a hate crime? This tragedy is certainly hateful. The more the fundie right ramps up anti-gay rhetoric the more violence we see. I wonder where the shooter goes to church? You know he does.
