There were 2,397 in 2000, and counties like this are dying on the vine as farms consolidate and young people leave. It should never have been made a county in the first place -- or rather, Asotin should still be a part of it. It's a failed county; they don't have a local economy to speak of, even in Pomeroy, the county seat, and the only thing keeping the county alive is government -- county offices, police, roads, dams, etc., heavily subsidized by the state, i.e., Western Washingtonians.
