Every Child Deserves a Mother and a Father…

posted by on February 21 at 5:56 AM

This is a very special installment of Every Child Deserves—it’s a bad-parenting, pit-bull-attacking Slog twofer:

A West Seattle girl was hospitalized Tuesday afternoon after being bitten by a pit bull. The 9-year-old suffered severe cuts to her upper and lower lips and to her chin and face, after being attacked at a Highland Park home, according to police reports.

Firefighters were called to a home at 7945 Delridge Way S.W. where the girl had been attacked by the 90-pound dog. A neighbor phoned for help after seeing the girl bleeding from her face.

Seattle Fire Department medics arrived and treated the girl, but advised her parents that, because of the severity of the wounds, she would need to be taken to Harborview Medical Center.

The girl was rushed to the hospital by private ambulance. Harborview officials were unable to verify her condition Wednesday afternoon.

Thanks to Slog tipper Paul—and, once again, pit bulls should be boiled alive and fed to their idiot owners. And something worse should be done to parents that don’t seek treatment for a mauled, bleeding child, leaving it to neighbors to call the paramedics.

You've got it backwards: pit bull owners should be boiled alive and fed to their idiot dogs. Especially these owners.

Shut UP, Dan! Oh, and nevermind about the early thing, I guess. I hope you're in a warm part of our time zone at least.

To be entirely fair, not all pit bulls are vicious. If trained properly, just like any other dog, they can be sweet, loving animals.

To be entirely fair, any dog can bite under the right stimulus. The problem is that Pit Bulls go right on biting and generally do a lot more damage than other dogs.

As Beth points out, any other dog can supply the same pleasures of ownership so when someone keeps such a dangerous animal around they're doing it for some reason that has nothing to do with raising "a sweet loving animal."

I think its a little over the top, and sexist, to suggest that Hillary Clinton should be boiled alive. That was the underlying message, wasn't it? I mean, its kind of hard to miss this with all of the press references to Hillary being a pit bull when her back is up against the wall. When will the press stop unfairly attacking the Clintons? Don't you care that Michelle Obama said she has always hated, hated, both democracy and America and that Obama's parents were certainly commies because that was always true of interracial couples back when they got married. I just hope the public wakes up in time to the Obama cult. Here in Iowa some even came to my door encouraging me to vote. It was terrifying to see those young folks walking around our neighborhood like Moonies. And now the press is starting to suggest Hillary should pull out even though she won the only primary that counts, the one in Michigan where Obama's name was not on the ballot. Clearly a case of reverse discrimination.

@5. I totally agree. As a pit bull owner with a two year old child, it is difficult to hear broad generalizations about a breed I know to be very different. Then again I am not an idiot owner or an idiot father. I agree the animals are not for everyone. Maybe people just need a liscense to have a pit bull (and a child for that matter).

oh Beth - that is just so sweet - to side with the pit bulls and against the safety of innocent and vulnerable children, bleeding and mauled and bitten on the face - the dog was going for the throat and a kill

such rational thoughts on how to run society - turn the biting dogs loose on the children - gosh might make in denial dog owners angry

will be one of the few times I agree totally with Dan, and I think parents should go after these biting dogs with a very sharp 4 foot machete, fueled with the anger of a black bear mother

how passive we are to fail to support and protect our children because of some fucking dog

Beth they are bred to be mean, they go crazy because of biology, not all, granted, but far too many, far too many times, daily all over America

Pitbulls, check. Irresponsible or downright evil hetero parents, check. Still, something's missing.... Wait, wasn't one of the parents, like, 300 pounds or something?

Pit bulls are cross breeds. There really isn't such a thing as "pit bull". They are a cross between an American Staffordshire Terrier and other, usually smaller, more aggressive dogs.
An American Staffordshire Terrier is a great family dog and would never bite or maul a child.
It's an important distinction. People throw the "pit bull" name around pretty loosely. Lots of dogs look like what you would consider to be a pit bull and aren't. So, let's not start boiling dogs, shall we?

My brother was recently almost attacked by a pitbull. It was a rescue dog that cannot be around other dogs, but the owner hadn't noticed it being odd around people. My brother was petting the dog and the dog was licking his face and wagging her tail and then --BAM-- the dog went for his jugular. No joke. The owner of the dog was horrified. Yeah, I would be, too. Thank god the dog was leashed.

you know what, fuck that dan. i've always been a fan of yours but saying "pit bulls should be boiled and fed to their owners" is closed-minded and out of character for you. i know, i know you're probably tired of hearing people defend these dogs but having raised the sweetest, most docile pit-bull on this earth i feel i've got to stand up for his breed. why do people cross the street when we walk out beautiful, well-trained dogs? cuz of people like you dan. thanks.

#8

get rid of the dog - when the child is raised - get a dozen, and don't make them angry as they attack the elderly as well

#8 - you risk too much in my opinion. What are you trying to prove? Get a beagle .... there are so many dogs that do not go crazy ever when around humans, without all the "TRAINING"

reconsider, any odds are too short, dump the pit for now

@ 10: wrong. The owner was a sound transit supporter. And a commie.

(I don't even know what that sound transit thing means really. I just know it is a Slog fav.)

We should start killing Pit Bulls, take pictures, and upload them to the Stranger flickr pool.

Bonus points if you score owner reaction shots.

#16 and you are far too old to be a good meal

I hate them. A few year back a pit was in the process of biting my leg, the neighbors so gentle pit, and my partner grabbed a shovel and whacked it VERY HARD on the head and back a couple of times

apparently good training cause it never showed again at our place, and we moved a few months later to a dog free building

life is too short to worry about dogs mauling you

PETA thinks all pit bulls should be killed too, because kiliing them and banning them will "prevent an enormous amount of suffering." ( maybe we should kill all orphans too so they dont get abused)
Dan is right in there with their values....except he doesnt pretend to do it out of love.

beth @ 5 and frustrated @8 -- pit bulls aren't regular dogs, get over yourselves. you think people haven't heard "but MY pitbull is loving" or "they're not ALL like that". your arguments are tired and stupid and destructive. owning a pitbull is like owning a tiger. their musculature is capable of doing enormous damage... 8 -- watch this dog around your two-year old. you don't want your child to become another statistic.

and lastly, why pitbulls??? cool-factor or something? there are so many wonderful breeds, why would non-junkyard owners ever choose a pitbull...?

Posted by Judith | February 21, 2008 9:51 AM

"Junkyard" is a code word for black and brown people.

@9 for myself, this is one of the only times I totally disagree with Dan. I guess that says a lot about both of us.

@14 & 34. Thanks for your concern about my child. I will be the first to take action to put my dog down if there begins to be the slightest of sign of agreesion towards a human. My dog is well trained and I don't put her in compromising situations. I think it sucks that pit bull owners are stereotyped as much as the dogs are.

@8 - totally agree that people should be licensed to have kids. Why did the NEIGHBORS call? And the paramedics had to tell the parents their daughter needed further medical care???!!??? How scarred is this kid going to be when her face heals up? How scarred is this kid already - emotionally?? These people are clearly incompetent as parents. One more example of why people shouldn't be allowed to go around breeding indiscriminately. Oh... so totalitarian. But think of all the problems it would solve!

90 pounds? The dog weighed 90 pounds? That's huge for a pit, or a pit-type dog. Sounds more like there was some Rottie in there. In other words, a "mean-looking, short-haired, square-headed, muscular dog of indeterminate origin."

I have no problem with pit bulls - I've known some sweet ones - but no one who is not an expert should ever be allowed to own an unneutered one. Sorry. They should all be spayed or neutered by law unless the owner is licensed to handle potentially dangerous breeds. I feel the same way about Presa Canarios and some of the other large, guarding-type breeds.

Of course, I think people who are too stupid to call the aid car for their own mauled child should be spayed or neutered by law, too.

I own a pit-mix and a poodle. The poodle's meaner. So was my border collie-husky mix. I've worked with countless rescue dogs over the years, and BREED doesn't affect temperament. It used to be Dobermans and German Shepherds everyone feared. Now it's pits. Next it will be otherwise intelligent sex advice columnists and the morons who applaud their generalizations.

This is your chance to set the record straight. Even if everything you say about pits is true, you chose a dog that a lot of people were going to feel an irrational fear of.

What prompted you to get a pit? What does a pit do for you that no other dog does?

@46

I really try not to live my life or make decisions based on the irrational fears of others. This is not to say that all people who are afraid of pit bulls are irrational in their fear.

I personally got a pit bull because there are many of them who get put down just because they are pit bulls. I am a responsible intelligent person who has and will continue to provide a safe and healthy home for my dog. She is neutered. I don't take her to dog parks (not because she will attack, but because she may be attacked by another dog and I realize she will win if she responds). I have put her through multiple dog trainings (which is more of an owner training). I do not leave her unattended with people who can not care for her appropriately. I am in turn rewarded with an excellent dog that I love and that lives well with my family. I rescued her from the Animal Shelter. Before I could take her home, I read books and did all the necessary things to educate and prepare myself.

I really think most problems arise because of people's ignorance, fear, paranoia, and not taking responsibility for an animal that is a bit more high maintenance.

Shouldn't it be the grandma you're mad at and not the actual pitbull OWNER? Grandma was watching the dogs and had 'em chained in her yard. The owner was nowhere around. Then of course the parents are to blame for not knowing how to respond to her injuries. But if you read the interviews with the dad, you'll see he sounds pretty ignorant. So it's no surprise he was clueless about calling paramedics.

Interesting. You and one other person posting are the only ones who said why they got a pit- rescue dogs- you took them to keep them from being euthanized. If that's the only reason then maybe the best solution is not to breed anymore.
