Dirty Clean Flicks

posted by on February 1 at 14:40 PM

Once upon a time there was a little company based in Utah called Clean Flicks. It specialized in editing all the “objectionable” things from Hollywood movies. Hollywood, as you’d expect, didn’t take too kindly to that, a number of directors and studios sued, and Clean Flicks was forced to shut down.

Now comes word — surprise, surprise — that the founder of Clean Flicks, Daniel Thompson, has been arrested for allegedly having sex with underage girls. Oh, and a ton of pornography was found on the premises as well.

More at the Salt Lake Tribune.

Update(s): As “infrequent” notes in the comments, Thompson’s store was allegedly a front for a porno operation.

Also, Clean Flicks—without Thompson’s involvement—is still operational, but they no longer edit movies. From their website:

In 2005, we were no longer allowed to offer edited films. Since then, we’ve carefully created an online database of great movies in every category that don’t need any editing to be safe and enjoyable for everyone. In fact, Cleanflicks is the only online DVD rental service that exclusively offers family friendly films for all ages and interests. Not just some, but every title on our site meets our Movies You Can Trust standards and includes our Parental Advice Information.

They [used to] show those Clean Flicks at Ricks and BYU, the Mormon colleges. That way the Molly Mormons and Peter Priesthoods can watch R rated movies without losing their temple recommends.

i guess he was right -- watching that stuff totally corrupted him. but think of all the people he saved from the same fate.

actually, if you read the article, he was never a "believer" he formed the company as a front for his pornography. that is an important detail...

For the record, Daniel Thompson, nor the other gentleman charged had any direct affiliation with CleanFlicks. A press release with more information should be up on CleanFlicks Web site later today.

Holy crap! I once spent the night with a super christian friend from gymnastics when i was 11 or so. They had rigged up two vcrs and the father would go through and cut out all the super violent parts of martial arts movies they loved, or scenes with side-boob and the like. I remember being confused as hell when he was doing this because my family watched Rocky Horror together. The really funny thing was that instead of doing this in private, the father did it right in front of us so we'd see the same gory moment fast forwarded and then rewound and the played again. It was hilarious.

Not sure if this child molester was a holier than thou type. He was just trying to exploit the market of holier than thou types by offering them sanitized version of Hollywood fare. Then he was using the money he earned to seduce and rape children.

The business and his sexual pecadillos can be separated entirely. It wasn't the like the Southern Baptist Convention or other religious organization was doing this, it was just some secular business (with a slimeball proprietor) trying to make a buck serving a niche market.

Also, is this really news (or news of any signifance the way you people are trying to spin it)? I mean c'mon. This shit is weak. If you're going to bash religious folks at least hit them with something that has some reasonable connection to them. Honestly....
