It's a nice collection but the space it's hanging in is really sterile that it makes it hard to really get the full impact of the pictures. They feel more staged than anything, hanging in rooms full of white light and humidifiers.
The post is titled "Currently hanging" and the pic is of a black man with some kind of rope around his neck...? umm...
Nice. Lewis Wickes Hine is my favorite photographer. I doubt I'll be able to make it up to Bellingham though.
The Photography Blog Shorpy shows quite a few of his photos (their newsfeed is one of my favorites).
KF, I believe that would be coal dust or dirt. The kid's neck is otherwise caucasian.
@2 - Driver In A West Virginia Mine is the title. The kid is white blackened by coal dust; the "rope" is a whip - he's a driver of horses probably pulling ore cars. The photo's theme is child labor.
Um. Yeah. This comes off bad. Not funny.
Gillsans, we share tastes in Shorpy. :)
Jen Graves, thanks for letting me know I still have time left to see this show.
@5, most of LWH's work is themed with child labor, not just this one.
Thanks for pointing me to Shorpy!
Shorpy is a marvelous website. While y'all are there, make sure to check out Jack Delano's photographs of railyards and trains. Magical.
The Hine exhibit in Bellingham was certainly worth the trip.
Yeah, Delano's railroad photos are awesome. The color is incredible. I have a feeling I'll be buying a print of one sooner or later (if I can narrow it down to one or two).
