Painting on a pick. Why didn't I think of that?
Awesome!!! I love Seattle kitsch. But... is Scarecrow leaving or something?! That would be a very, very sad day.
No, it is not. I just read the actual website more carefully. Scarecrow's part of the "local icon" facet of the exhibit.
So, why are these P. T. Barnum gimmicks deemed art?
I don't know, Paul -- what would you deem them? Is it the size you have a problem with or that he painted on non-traditional mediums? Maybe it's the subject matter?
If he painted on a 1/2" x 1/2" canvas, would that be art in your eyes?
I'm genuinely curious as to why you don't think these should be classified as art?
Paul- your point probably wasn't given the thought as i'm giving it, but i it's worth a response. basically because it's a crux of my work as a whole... that art can be kitschy, goofy, small, and affordable and still be "smart" with real substance. this show wrestles with some important shit in Seattle right now, and i put just as much engineering and craft into my work as any other painter, sculptor, or conceptual artist ever does. like i said, i'm sure you didn't mean much by it, but it was a good question, so thanks for the reason to chime in.
a piece from the show to check out-
