Concerned Women

posted by on February 14 at 20:21 PM

The Concerned Women for America are very concerned about the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force giving an award—the Leather Leadership Award, one of several the group passes out every year at its annual Creating Change conference—to Guy Baldwin. Here’s a bit about Guy from the NGLTF press release:

Baldwin is a Los Angeles-based psychotherapist, author and activist on behalf of “erotically uncommon people.” Baldwin may be best known for his monthly essays which appeared in Drummer Magazine and were collected in his 1993 book, Ties That Bind. Baldwin is a former titleholder, having served in 1989 as Mister National Leather Association and also as the 11th International Mr. Leather. In 1987, Baldwin launched the DSM Project to mobilize mental health professionals worldwide to press for changes to the official clinical definitions that had long been used to label leather people, gay and otherwise, as pathological.

And here’s the Concerned Women for America on Guy’s award:

Slavery Advocate Honored with Support from the DNC

The Democratic National Committee has put its support behind the honoring of Guy Baldwin, a sado-masochism advocate, by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. Matt Barber, CWA’s Policy Director for Cultural Issues, and Peter LaBarbera, President of Americans for Truth, condemn this action which occurred during Black History Month.

Wha? Huh? I’m not sure how the Democratic National Committee is involved in this and I can’t bring myself to listen to the Concerned Women for America podcast. And I also didn’t get the memo about the inappropriateness of indulging in BDSM during Black History Month. I guess I better go untie my boyfriend—wouldn’t wanna accidentally disrespect the memory of Harriet Tubman during Black History Month.

If it's any consolation, I'm as lost as you are.

Why doesn't Concerned Women for America have any female spokespersons?

Indeed! Why do we never see any of these so-called Concerned Women?

I think BDSM is a beautiful modern way to celebrate slave-mistresses, concubines, and brides taken in war by force.

I've always loved how people's kinks exclude them from the belief that all human beings should have equality and equity -- its great! Celebrating one's right to enslave during a month dedicated to showing the terrible wounds and price real slavery has had on humanity is GREAT! Keep up the good work.

So, this is your excuse for being a no-show at Slog Happy tonight?

Cheez, even Chaz showed up for THAT.

Tsk, tsk.

Newly elected city council person, Tim Burgess, can explain all of this.

Putting it lightly, at one time he was their well paid expert publicity hack.

It seems anti gay hate mongering is still pulling in the bucks ... and in all fairness, Burgess says he had regrets all the way to the bank.

Anti gay only begins to tell the story of CWA, total right wing miscreants.

Sure as hell not my mom or granny.

I listened to the podcast... it made me so angry at these people that I had to go listen to Master & Servant! They must really hate Depeche Mode. ^_^

Rather than worrying about how uptight straight people are labelling them as "pathological," the leather community should be more concerned about being co-opted by the NGLTF, a clear indication that they have become cliche and boring. Or more accurately, that they have been cliche and boring for a long time. Wasn't Michel Foucault way into the leather scene?

Next up for ridicule/salvation/yawn production: the Goths!

Thank you Seattle for electing CWfA crony Tim Burgess! I am telling you Rossi has a future in Seattle as long as he supports bike lanes and opposes tunnels.

@3 - I've often wondered about the number of men who are Concerned Women of America. Every time I've submitted a comment or question on their web site, I've gotten mail from some guy in response. You should check what they have to say about the "gay agenda". Be sure to contact them to tell them how you feel about it. Probably some guy will write back to you.

Man, that's nothing. At my school, the Black Students Association had a date auction--an actual, honest-to-god, bid-money-for-the-person-on-the-stage auction--during Black History Month, and no one saw the irony.

@21: Black students associations everywhere seem to be immune to that irony. I think the BSU at UW also does a charity bachelor auction every year.
