I hate it when people end a sentence with "so..."
Don't have a problem with "what not" tho. I am curious what it's a sign of.

I'm becoming partial to saying "and all that jazz". It's much more fun to say and positive sounding than "and what not". Just dont overuse it, then it gets annoying.

Perhaps it's a sign it's slow news day.

I like "and whatnot." It's certainly better than ending a sentence with "and such as," anyway.

It always gets to me when people end sentences with "or...?"

It's very passive- like they're inviting you to finish their sentence and/or contradict them.

I was going to criticize this thread for being judgemental (on slog?), but then I thought of a phrase I can't stand: "It is what it is." Drives me bonkers. Such a hopeless phrase.

Thanks for the nostalgic reminder of my old Sunday-school teacher whom we kids nicknamed "Mrs. Whatnot." Haven't thought about her in years.

I prefer to end my sentences with "...and shit."

I like to end all my sentences with "Hey, everybody!" and then do jazz hands.

I try to keep a relatively even mix of "and whatnot," "and shit," and the oft-underused "and so on."

I prefer "and what-have-you" or "and such-like."

What about "and such?"

I've been railing against "and what not" for months, and has anyone come to aid me in support of my tirade? NO!

POST A LIST OF BANNED PHRASES IN YOUR IDEAL WORLD. Then explain why the phrase should be banned.

It would be far more fun and entertaining, and far less annoying.

I'm asking honestly, Josh. Not trying to be mean here. Seriously, do it.

The reason I'm being ALL CAPS about this idea is that I think people should know *where* these phrases come from.

"And what not", "My bad", "for all intents and purposes", "After all is said and done", etc.

How did these phrases come to be? It would be awesome to actually explore and find out.

With that being said, it is what it is.

I end most of my sentences with a period. But that's because nobody wants to talk to me, and I'm stuck commenting on blogs.

The only telltale sign I see here is that of a man with a blog amplifying his curmudgeonly annoyances. Homer Simpson's dad but who already works at the paper and doesn't have to hope they run his goofy letter to the editor.

I first encountered "and what not" when I moved to eastern Washington to go to school. I blamed the them until I moved back and it had taken over here too. Eesh. I am totally guilty of starting my sentences with "so" though. :P :P

My biggest problem with language is that I'll pick up a phrase and use it mockingly or ironically and then eventually it becomes part of my vernacular much to my chagrin. See, "my bad" "hella" "wicked" "lol" etc. Sigh.

I was impressed by the little kid who kept it clean by saying something was "hecka cool".

Here's mine: people who constantly use the phrase "real quick," i.e. "I just gotta check my e-mail real quick." Drives me up the fucking wall.
