American Gangsta

posted by on February 21 at 13:48 PM

He fought the law…
larry-davis.jpg…and the law won.

How he met the end:

Mr. Davis, 41, was stabbed to death by another inmate around 7:30 p.m. during a recreational break on the grounds of the Shawangunk Correctional Facility in Ulster County, about 80 miles north of New York City, corrections officials said. The other inmate, Luis Rosado, used a crude, nine-inch shank to stab Mr. Davis repeatedly in his head, arms, back and chest, said Erik Kriss, a spokesman for the Department of Corrections.

How he became famous:

Nov. 19, 1986, 20 police officers attempted to raid an apartment in the Morrisania section of the Bronx where Mr. Davis, a suspect in the murders of at least five drug dealers, had been staying.

As the officers stormed the apartment with their guns drawn, Mr. Davis, in blazing fashion, grabbed a pistol and a shotgun and fired at them from a darkened bedroom. At least six of the officers were hit, and two were wounded seriously. The fusillade left the apartment bloodied and littered with spent cartridges, yet Mr. Davis managed a narrow escape through a window.

His escape sparked a nationwide manhunt that ended 17 days later after a standoff at a Bronx apartment building. Mr. Davis took a family hostage in a 14th-floor apartment and gave himself up only after police officers assured him he would not be harmed.

Earth accept this dishonored guest
Larry Davis is laid to rest.

Was he a client or rival of the drug-dealers he killed?

Wonder if someone in prison security will lose his job for not preventing the acquisition and possession of this "crude, 9-inch shank".

Ahh Charles...

Yet another week with your theme of "Da White Folk Keepin Muh Brotha's Down"

Dontcha just love perpetuating the stereotype of black men? Dealin' drugs, whackin brotha's, doin' time, martyrdom by death living large.

If you really want to champion a cause Chaz, you might consider changing the discussion and perception that Americans of all size, shapes, colors, religions have for black America.

Put your energy towards something positive. Write articles about positive things involving your community.

I know it will be hard to find positive articles. But maybe it will inspire you to actually go out and do some serious authenticate reporting to create your own stories.

But that wouldn't be as easy as your current gig now would it?

Reality Check

Great poster, Charles. If I were in college today, that'd be the poster I'd put on my wall.

@3 - I realize it's not quite in his "community", but his love of French and Italian breasts usually seems to be on the positive side.

Larry Davis is seen a a modern day American Gangster. Right up there with Frank Lucus. Personally though I think it's kinda amazing that this guy had this shoot out with police and managed to escape. However we have to be careful not to idolize such characters. We've been talking about Larry Davis' death over at Highbrid Nation and in the end I think the world will be polarized as to whether the world lost an icon or just another criminal.
