Youth Pastor Watch

posted by on January 29 at 9:30 AM

New Jersey:

A former youth minister at the Church of Christ in Washington Township has pleaded guilty to a second-degree sexual assault charge, admitting to a sexual relationship with a girl in the church congregation that began in 2005 when the girl was 15 and continued until shortly before his March 9, 2007 arrest.

The girl was a member of the youth group where Paul Glover, 33, formally of Glassboro and a current resident of Hattiesburg, MS, held the youth minister position since 2000.

Florida:

Youth pastor takes message to kids.

He doesn’t wait for young people to find him.

No one who wants to work with youth should be allowed to.

If Church of Christ is the UCC thats too bad. I grew up in the UCC (Obama's church too) and it was very liberal, including being wide open to gays. My youth group leader was gay and almost everything we did benefitted the poor in one way or another. I may have strayed far away from faith of any kind, but i LOVE that church.

My current church is the UCC. I don't believe a word of the Jesus stuff, but my wife likes having a church community, and the UCC was the one we both thought matched our values best (that is, they don't hate gay people, and don't believe in being pushy assholes about faith)

I also have some Church of Christ friends, and let me set your mind at ease, they are NOTHING like UCC, and have nothing to do with them.

Let me put it this way...CoC doesn't march in pride parades. My UCC congregation has.

@5 - thanks for the clarification, steve! I guess either way it sucks that this happened, but i'm still glad it didnt occur in the UCC.

When I was in high school (before I came to my senses) I was pretty active in youth groups, and *every* youth pastor I came in contact with was an attractive guy in his twenties. The girls just loved them.

Obviously, it isn't appropriate behavior. Not only are they breaking the law, they are supposed to serve as counselors to the youth and sleeping with your charges is bad form. Still, I'm not surprised that case after case keeps popping up. I doubt this man had to work very hard to sleep with the girl.
