Is it just me, or is this town going fucking crazy?

That young woman is in my thoughts tonight.

It's not just you, and I've just about had it. I'd move but, with my luck, the trend will prove to be national.

Who out here has to blow Greg Nickels to get some serious cop coverage in the U District?

I find it hard to tell whether crime has really increased as much as it seems, or whether I'm just paying more attention to the events that happen now. I recall people getting shot on my street when I lived in the U district some years back.

Here is the official UWPD notification-

"On January 8, 2008, at approximately 07:00 a.m., a female UW student arrived in her personal vehicle at the north entrance to campus located at 17th Avenue NE and NE 45th Street. She requested medical assistance from the UW parking attendant. The parking attendant saw that the female had a serious head injury and called 911 for help. After medical personnel arrived on scene, the female was transported to Harborview Medical Center for treatment and remains in critical condition. It appears that the female is a victim of a physical assault perpetrated by a male in the early morning hours, though the University of Washington Police Department has been unable to develop facts in this case due to the victim's condition. The exact location of the assault has not been determined, but it is possible that it occurred in the vicinity north of campus. There are currently no known suspects in the case."

Why didn't she call 911? It seems like if she asked the parking attendant for assistance, she didn't want to get the police involved. My bet is she knew the guy and doesn't want to rat on him.

If not this is seriously fucked up.

@5 -- Maybe she was too fucked up to call? Maybe he beat her in the car and bolted? Maybe she doesn't have a cell phone?

C'mon...try not to paint her as a dumb victim...victim's bad enough.

The Times is reporting that violent crime is actually down across the state, including Seattle.

I don't know what it means, but I'm seeing a lot more cops cruising around the Deano's/Chocolate City block lately. More drug activity too.

I don't mean any disrespect. I'm just praying this isn't some sort of fucked up random act of violence. It's sad no matter what, but at least if she knew the guy it wouldn't be so worrysome to everyone else in the neighborhood.

God Lord #5! Lets blame the victim a little bit more! The girl had a HEAD INJURY. She can only answer Yes or No questions - you really expect her to be able to think straight? She probably meant to drive herself to the hospital and ended up at school instead because she was confused. For all we know she thought the Parking Lot Attendant was a doctor!

I agree with @6 - @5's comment was rather jerkish. The parking attendant booth they are talking about is probably a 20 sec drive from the first houses over there on 45th. Close. Who knows where she came from, whether or not she had a cell phone, or how quickly the damage from the beating set in (maybe she had time to drive before the real hurt set in). Whatever, who knows. Benefit of the doubt, bub.
And when one asks for medical attention from a stranger, who wouldn't expect them to call 911? Isn't that the whole point?

@11 and @12 -- appreciate the back-up and I hear ya, but before anyone thinks I'm blameless, it was me who posted the initial hipster snark on the Shannon Harps murder post, an act that still makes me feel like an asshole.

@10 - WTF?

I wonder if the woman was already in her car or going to her car when it happened. Or at least not coming from home. I could see someone just trying to get to the safest/closest place possible.

I had a pretty serious head injury in a neighbor's yard when I was 10. After it happened, I went on autopilot, got up, walked to my house and called my mother's workplace, leaving my 2 friends to trail after me. Once someone answered the phone I couldn't hold a conversation, but some sort of internal emergency system kicked in. I could see something similar happening here.

I hope the woman is able to recover quickly and give details/description to the police.

@7 - Of course they are saying that crime is down all over the state, a couple years ago the FBI changed the way districts report crime to the FBI offices; it's a much better way to 'solve' crime then to spend money putting officers onto the streets. Just pretend like it didn't happen and it never makes the 'official' tally.

Was it just me or did they ANNOUNCE just a week ago that there was some random guy that was propositioning females in the UW parking lot and the cops were putting out his description and telling everyone to keep an eye out...

She pulled into the UW, and was transported to Harborview, not the UW hospital?

It seems possible that she got in the car to get away from her attacker. But I guess we won't know until she (hopefully) recovers.

@18 - Harborview has the superior trauma center.

I just wanted to say that the girl in this story is my roommate and I just wanted to say that she is one of the nicest most innocent girls anyone could meet. Whether it was someone she knew or not she did what she thought was right at that time, it is possible that she didn't have her cell phone on her and that is why she didn't call. I understand that the person that made the comment earlier is sorry, but people should really think about what they say and how people that know the victim are going to feel about them. We just ask that you all put her in your prayers.

Marissa, I am so sorry for you. Do you know how she is doing? Does her family know? A lot of disturbing shit seems to have happened on campus and around the region in the last year; I attribute it to the general malaise we all seem to be sinking into.

I also am one of her friends...we don't know very much about her condition other than it is critical. She cannot speak, so we still do not know what happened. We only hope that it wasn't someone she knew because who could do such a horrible thing?

Posted by Lyn | January 8, 2008 11:54 PM

Maybe she just fell down. Without a statement from her, how do you (any of you) know?

Or do we now trust the police statements? This wasn't a gay friendly attack, was it? I'm confused!?!

she has injuries far worse than ones you can get from just falling... "critical condition"

I work on the Ave. A coworker told me that the woman was attacked on 18th Ave and NE 47th and that there are witnesses. Marissa and Lyn, I am very sorry for what happened to your friend and I hope she recovers quickly. And I'm sorry the U district is such a hell hole.
