Unhinged

posted by on January 24 at 8:18 AM

How much do right-wing talkers hate gay people? They hate us so much that they’ll mock a heterosexual actor less than two hours after his tragic and accidental death—why? Because that actor had the nerve to play one gay role over the course of his more than decade-long career. Via Towleroad:

FOX News host John Gibson revelled in Heath Ledger’s death yesterday on his radio show, finding a new opportunity to mock Brokeback Mountain (and by proxy, gay love), which in 2006 he called a “gay agenda movie,” Think Progress reports:

“Playing an audio clip of the iconic quote, ‘I wish I knew how to quit you’ from Ledger’s gay romance movie Brokeback Mountain, Gibson disdainfully quipped, ‘Well, he found out how to quit you.’ Laughing, Gibson then played another clip from Brokeback Mountain in which Ledger said, ‘We’re dead,’ followed by his own, mocking ‘We’re dead’ before playing the clip again.”

Here’s hoping actors and directors in Hollywood take note and, like Barack Obama, refuse to go on Fox News programs. You can hear the clip at Think Progress.

What a fucking pig.

UPDATE: In case you feel so moved…

And, yes, Gibson’s comments go a long way toward perpetuating the injustice documented in the post below this one.

that is just in such poor taste. would they do the same to someone like tom hanks, for playing gay in philadelphia? or to hillary swank for being in boys don't cry? probably not. heath was young and beautiful and talented and brokeback was a good movie. my mother said that seeing brokeback was the first time that she had ever truly realized how painful it can be to be gay... those wingers just can't handle the fact that a lot of people felt gay sympathy.

There needs to be an Imus-sized outrage followed by a formal apology on behalf of Heath's family, ex-partner and their daughter.

Fox should hire Fred Phelps to do on-air editorials. I think he really fits the brand.

Someone needs to cut his balls off.

If his isn't all alone in his apartment at night, if he is actually married to a woman, then that woman is obligated to never have sex with this piece of fucking shit again.

Really, it's the internet's fault. The guy's broadcast would have disappeared into the airwave ether otherwise. But no, I got to hear it at the click of a button.
I wasn't offended, but I'm also done with caring what radio/TV hosts say. It's so easy not to listen.

If you want to put those email to good use and don't feel like writing a long drawn out letter, send an email to all the addresses with one simple request:

"Please send me a list of sponsors who advertise on Fox News, and particularly John Gibson's show.

Thank you,"

Of course the way he is going to defend this is to point out the glee with which people celebrated Jerry Falwell's death. I am glad that Falwell is dead, and I am OK with my own hypocrisy.

Did Heath Ledger dedicate his life to stealing from the poor and defenseless and spewing hatred in the name of Jesus?

Of course you're hypocritical. Everyone is.

@27,

Falwell made the world worse. At a minimum, Ledger was a neutral influence, neither good nor bad. (At a maximum, he inspired people with his performance in Brokeback.) You're not a hypocrite, at least not on this issue.

Posted by keshmeshi | January 24, 2008 10:35 AM

There's a difference between going after Falwell when he died and going after Heath Ledger. Falwell was a public figure whose job was to speak publically about god and religion and politics and whatever else shit he thought it necessary to lecture us about. Ledger was an actor playing a role in a narrative film. Actors, appearing in a role, aren't making a public statement, (unless, they want to). Also, I don't recall liberal news types and commentators being that vicious about Falwell. Yes, the comedians had a field day, but unlike the right, most liberal commentators have the courtesy to be respectful of the dead, even if they are loathsome.

And just as a sidenote, Heath Ledger actually played a gay cyclist on an Australian TV show before he became famous in America.

Hey Dan-
Fox doesn't give a shit about anything except what Fox gives a shit about.
Don't bother posting their contact info

POST THE ADVERTISERS CONTACT INFO.

I don't watch any of that crap so I don't know who's payin' for it. I'd sure hate to think it was me because of where I spend my $$$.

Where could I find the sponsors of FoxNews? Writing to the sponsors and stating one's displeasure with too whome they give money would do a lot I would think. Boycotts rarely work, I am not suggesting a boycott.

@35, I agree, we should list the advertisers who are on Fox and contact THEM about John Gibson.

Posted by Cato the Younger Younger | January 24, 2008 12:59 PM

See, there's the problem. You don't KNOW who the advertisers are, because you don't watch Fox News, so neither Fox News nor the advertisers have any reason to care what you think.
