The fifth season adds another element of life in a decaying American city--print media--to the already astoundingly rich portrait created over the past four seasons. It's the best show ever made, and certainly the best thing to come out of Baltimore--my home town--ever. (Sorry, Natty Boh.) I'm already sad it's over. Oh, and Obama loves The Wire, which is as good a reason to vote for him as any,... You can't just pick it up midway through a season and really appreciate/follow it properly. On top of that the characters evolve a bit between seasons so you miss a lot of subtlety unless you watch it from the beginning.

I got lucky when HBO ran all four seasons in the months leading up to '08. It was addicting to say the least.

GOOD acting
GOOD stories
EVERYONE is dirty

If you have comcast check the "re-ups" to get up to speed, but I'd try to hunt down the previous season DVDs.
