The Wire

A significant portion of the ridiculous mountain of cash I hand over to Comcast every month will be completely justified tonight as The Wire begins its fifth and final season.

The fifth season adds another element of life in a decaying American city—print media—to the already astoundingly rich portrait created over the past four seasons.

It’s the best show ever made, and certainly the best thing to come out of Baltimore—my home town—ever. (Sorry, Natty Boh.) I’m already sad it’s over.

Oh, and Obama loves The Wire, which is as good a reason to vote for him as any, no?

More on the fifth season from The New York Times.

A great show. Like the focus on the world of drugs and politics back East. A great pick to rent the earlier seasons.

Best show ever -- nah, but we understand the home town pride.
Watching this show makes one glad Seattle is not so violent, corrupt and decayed.

John Waters is the best thing to come out of Baltimore, ever.

why is it that rags like the stranger, the p.i., ent weekly, etc, ad nauseum, are ALWAYS four or five years past the curve? you mention the genius of THE WIRE naught but at the beginning of it's FINAL SEASON? that's why you get cap hill 'hipsters' saying they've never heard of it. in 5 years you'll all be saying how you remember watching the first season way before anyone else, just like the time you were one of the 25 people to see the white stripes at the croc. what EVER.

I remember trying to watch it a few years ago and I couldn't get into it. You can't just pick it up midway through a season and really appreciate/follow it properly. On top of that the characters evolve a bit between seasons so you miss a lot of subtlety unless you watch it from the beginning.

I got lucky when HBO ran all four seasons in the months leading up to '08. It was addicting to say the least.

GOOD acting
GOOD stories
EVERYONE is dirty

If you have comcast check the "re-ups" to get up to speed, but I'd try to hunt down the previous season DVDs.

sidenote to #8:

I'm probably the least hip person on Capitol Hill, sir.

Natty Boh...really? I'm from Baltimore, too. I've never seen the show (it's on my netflix queue), but I should hope it's better than Natty Boh!

#1: The show was Homicide: life on the street. David Simon was a writer and producer and is the creator of the Wire.

#6: We need to find a bar so we can have a pool on when bubbles is going to take a hit.

#7 and 9: If you go the On Demand HBO Wire re-up at 12:01 on Sundays. You can see the next episode that the other mopes have to wait a week.

Boy, I sound like a wire nerd

Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit!

Calling the wire a TV show is essentially an insult. It's like calling Socrates a talker.

Mrs. bought me season 4 for Christmas, and it reminds me of the first two seasons of 24 in how engaging it is. Easily one of the best shows I've ever seen, and I can't wait to pick up seasons 1-3.

john waters? it's like comparing orson welles and ed wood..
Yes, John Waters is pretty neat and all, but the Wire is one of the most unrecognized masterful pieces of media to run currently.
