This is the best thing that has happened so far in 2008. Whee! At least that asshat Clay realized that there is no point in moving the Storm only to shut them down.

go SEATTLE Storm!

Calling the WNBA championship a "major title" is a bit of a stretch.

However, that is good news for the Storm. They probably wouldn't have survived the move, and they've got a devoted following in Seattle.

YAY! all seattle lesbians can now put away their riot gear!

I've only been in Seattle for 2 years, so I may sound like an idiot when I ask:

When the hell were we worrying about "the Storm", how the hell does their existence have anything to do with the Sonics, since when did the WNBA matter to anyone who gives a flying fuck about sports, and once again, when the hell were we--or--when the hell was anybody worrying about "the Storm" leaving Seattle?

P.S.
I had no fucking idea "the Storm" existed until this post.

not to interrup this community blow job, but the Storm has sucked major schlong the last 2 years. LJ is the truth, she is one of the best woman ballers out there, but Bird and the rest of em are completely overrated and play lousy 2gether. im glad for their fans, but man do they suck.

I'm a hard-core pro basketball fan, NBA and WNBA. And I gotta say about the Sonics, I just don't care anymore. It's like mourning someone who already died and about whom you learn some nasty revelations once they're in the grave. And yet, I never stopped caring about the Storm.

For one thing, with all due respects to Ichiro, they only have the most dominant, dynamic, iconic, inimitable pro athlete in Seattle in one Lauren Jackson. With all due respects to Serena Williams, you could say Lauren Jackson is the most dominant, dynamic,... female athlete in the world.

For another thing, though, you just knew Bennett was always bluffing when he said he wouldn't split the Sonics and Storm. The man's a businessman, not a professional jackass who's out to undermine his own interests just to spite people.

So yes, wonderful news! And even better, they'll be staying at the Key, no doubt.

As for the NBA, well, between Paul Allen and Nate McMillan, Brandon Roy and Martell Webster, the Portland Trail Blazers are looking like Seattle South. Throw in that 13-game win streak and the prospect of Greg Oden coming on board next year, and it's hard to remember Seattle even still has an NBA team.

It's about fucking time. Cressona, this season's looking a lot better already, even without a coach, GM or a contract. If the Storm aren't planning a celebration to follow tomorrow's announcement, look for something at TOJ.

Does that mean Key Area *isn't* going to be torn down, or will the Storm be relocated? The Thunderbirds are building a new arena in Kent...

I used to be a WNBA cynic, even joking that WNBA stood for "Were Not Bona-fide Athletes". But then, something happened--I started going to their games and I'll be damned if I didn't start loving this team and absolutely respecting their level of play and entertainment value for per dollar.

This is truly fantastic news.

@4 The WNBA is the highest level of play for this sport (women's basketball) in the world. As such, the Storm's championship was every bit the major title as the Sonic's in 1979.

@6 Go to a game and you'll find out for yourself just how terrific the WNBA is.

@3 That's actually pretty damn funny.

I would hope that the Storm will stay at the Key as is. The arena works just fine for the Storm. And it's great being able to take a quick bus ride from Cap Hill to see games.

I think there is not enough luxury boxes/seating capacity for the Storm.

Fuck you cressona, youre not a feal fan. Youre a portland transplant, who can finally for the first time in 13 fucking years have something to smile about. The sonics NEED to stay...

When the Sonics can actually start WINNING a fucking game, then they can stay but since they can't even pull that off successfully, then what the fuck is the point? I used to be a season ticket holder until 2 years ago...screw it, I was wasting my money on a worthless team. Can't wait to see them go and get booed out of Oklahoma

This would be exciting if people cared -- genuinely cared -- about the Storm. But they don't. Did you see their victory parade a few years back? Remember the giant, party in the streets celebration that broke out when they beat... uh, who did they beat again? Anyhow, maybe you were one of the forty-five people who showed up for that tiny victory parade.

Believe me, if the Hawks win the Super Bowl this year, I think the victory parade will draw a few more people.

@16- It's not that the WNBA isn't the best in the world. It's that women's basketball isn't a major sport.

I would also argue that Seattle has had one major championship since the 79 Sonics, and that is the 91 Huskies football team. 72,000 fans per game can't be wrong.

Holy shit--according to the PI's article, the leader of the group of new owners is Anne Levison, former Dep Mayor and Dep Director of the Monorail.
