I, for one, am all for compulsory home ec. I will not rest until every child in this country can make a decent roux.
Seriously, too many people are slobs when it comes to housekeeping, and they have no idea how to cook or eat right. That may be whimsical when you're young and cute, but it makes for dreadful old people. And sewing helps you with your manual dexterity.
So there!
I longed to take sewing in high school, but that would have caused a riot. I had to wait until college, and entered my costume design program not knowing how to sew...
Cooking I learned at Aunt ZooZoo's knee, so I can make a good roux.
Dan, did you see the NYT piece on the Fat Blogs?
why are there ads for john mccain on the slog that say "stop hillarycare"? with this url http://www.freedomworks.org/stophillarycare
It's never cool to eat veal.
@4
Veal is delicious
Re: Emergency rate cut
Yeah, it doesn't look the slightest bit like Federal Reserve is in its final throes, does it? How about that panic selling, folks? All kidding aside, Bernanke will be in the bar for the rest of the week, and your US dollars will make excellent wallpaper. Be sure to tip your waitress. Oral sex or the barter system will work.
Thanks for the video of someone getting paralyzed. I love that shit.
The reason for cooking classes in Britain is the state of the British diet, which makes Americans look like health fanatics. Most Brits under the age of fifty have never had a home-cooked meal other than a massive breakfast fry-up -- bacon, sausage, black pudding, eggs, baked beans, fried mushrooms and tomatoes, toast. Many Brits go years at a stretch without tasting even a cooked fruit, vegetable or green -- they eat chips, or fried potatoes, with their fish and chips, or with their curry, or with (as god is my witness) with their spaghetti bolognese. They eat more Big Macs than we do, and more candy, and more crisps. And of course the average Brit consumes several gallons of beer a day, usually starting at ten in the morning.
And this disaster is absolutely generational: schoolkids in Britain have by far the worst diets in the developed world. Their obesity problem isn't as bad as ours overall, yet, but it's getting closer, and among kids it's WORSE. And their alcohol problem dwarfs ours, in every age group.
@fnarf-add to that a higher level of sugar in their toothpastes, lower levels of flouride in the tap and wah-lah...bad teeth.
It's always been o.k. to eat veal. Even after Miranda said Carrie was a bitch for ditching her ass for the "politically incorrect meat" with Big.
Veal is funny. And delish.
Uh, there's no sugar in toothpaste, here or there.
My toothpaste has sodium saccharin in it. Don' know if that's any better than sugar...
Debate the merits of saccharine all you want, but if you're trying to prevent caries, there's no question at all. Which is what the original poster was on about: rotten teeth.
British teeth aren't rotten so much as they are brown and snaggly, though. It's the tea, and the absence of orthodontia (the only Brits you will ever see with braces are in their 30s or 40s).
re: suing realtors is a great idea. realtors are the lowest form of salesperson on the planet.
bernanke cutting rates? get ready for inflation to cut the rug out from under you. i'd rather have unemployment for 15% of people looking for jobs than have 10 YoY% inflation for all
The couple suing their real estate agent are griping about an inflated price of 100k on their $1.2 million house. Cry me a fucking river.
keshmeshi, there is a larger principle at play which is The National Association of Realtors are a bunch of lying sacks of shit who only look out for their bottom line when it comes to showing people what they can truly afford. I'd rather have realtors get the message they cant fuck with showing clients homes, than being apathetic here.
Actually, British Isles bad teeth is highly genetic. Been very well studied in physical anthropology. They are the spreaders of horrible teeth throughout the world.
