The Morning News

posted by on January 7 at 8:56 AM

Bill Clinton: Not exactly wowin’ the crowds in New Hampshire.

Hillary Clinton: Vows to fight on after what looks like an increasingly likely loss in New Hampshire tomorrow.

Barack Obama: After bashing Hillary all last year—remember Huckabee’s pledge to put her on a rocket to Mars?—GOP nervous about running against “post-partisan” Obama.

Mitt Romney: Now running against Washington D.C.

The Queen of England: The incomes of the subjects of HRH, Elizabeth Windsor, surpass the incomes of U.S. citizens for the first time since the 19th Century.

The French: They’ve got a crush on Obama.

Roger Clemens: Swears he never took steroids—honest!

John Michael Obert: Sex offender incarcerated on McNeil island had “computer CDs full of graphic child pornography,” say officials.

Pit Bulls: Crazed killing machines an increasingly popular “pet” in Seattle area. In cheerier pit bull news, over the last few days police shot and killed charging, attacking, threatening pit bulls in Virginia, Illinois, Kentucky, Florida, and Minnesota. In Tennessee a police officer shot himself in the foot trying to take down a charging pit bull, and in the U.K. a man jumps on a pit bull that was mauling his friend and chokes the dog to death with his bare hands.

Uh, that's all? Nothing on Kenya, Bloomberg, Pakistan, Sarkozy, Iran, lethal injection, or Iraq?

How come there was such little reporting on the Romney win in Wyoming?

I know its not that crucial, but still....its a win and he won by more than 10%......

Great. Looking forward to 11 months of presidential race coverage. It's only January and even the Slog is droning already...

right on Morgan.

It is far too early to accept/promote one victorious candidate when there are only cosmetic differences between the front runners (Dem speaking only).

Change is not exactly an original campaign theme. I think it has been used quite often over the past 200 years of presidential elections.

How about analysis of what change means, instead of such a quick rush to cheerleader outfits for home team.

Haven't we learned not to be so easy to give it away?

Ah, just HAD to stick in a stab at pit bulls there, didn't ya? And here I thought this might qualify as somewhat newsworthy, too.

OK, if the UK is doing better, why don't we re-up with them?

Higher income, broader health care, shorter elections. Mass transit that's rapid. Hell, throw in Canada, too, eh?

The CDC researchers concluded that legislation based on dog behavior is more effective than targeting breeds.

Uh oh. Score 1 for the pro-pit crowd there.

tsm, the score is still 100-1 against pits.

Actually Obama and Edwards have both been pretty good about elucidating what "Change" means. Edwards is better about reducing it to soundbites - "taking on the big corporations and lobbyists, etc." But both of them have outlined their foreign policy views with an academic prowess that is (pardon my optimism Seattle) refreshing. It's out there, if you can pay attention for more than 10 seconds.

Pits are not dogs. They're servants of that Satan guy the Christians keep freaking out over.

Yup, wait until the pit bull attacks someone. Only then put it away.

Posted by unPC | January 7, 2008 9:46 AM

See? Pits can't be all that dangerous if some guy can kill one with his bare hands. Stop being so worried.

"And we're going to keep going until the end of the process on February 5th."

It's nice of Hillary to confirm that the Washington caucuses won't mean shit for us.

I'm pro-pitbull, but at this point I'd be happy if making them disappear would get you to shut the fuck up.

Seriously, LET IT GO.

Just a minor nitpick: the Queen is "Her Majesty", not "Her Royal Highness". Give yourselves a raise!

Gunboats of the rev. guards in Iran threatened to blow up US ships. The US ships were locked and loaded and ready to fire when the gunboats went away.

But: the gunboats HAD NO PIT BULLS.

So, not to worry, and clearly, not a story.

I've always wanted a pit bull but I didn't think it was worth it to put up with the prejudice.

But I think the era of faith-based anti-science thinking is finally coming to an end. Scientific thinking keeps winning over public opinion in areas like global warming, stem cell research, evolution, sex education, and disease prevention. I'm sure there will always be hold outs but in the long run the opinions of animal behaviorists and CDC scientists will carry more weight than somebody with a bunch of news clippings and an axe to grind.

OK. You keep your pit bulls. I'll keep my guns. Sounds like a reasonable arrangement.

The problem with dragging out the pitbull stories again and again is that it does nothing to sway either side.

Those who are pro-pitbull will continue to believe asshole owners create asshole dogs no matter what the breed, and as far as the anti-pitbull crowd, well, you're just preaching to the choir.

Is there really anyone who is undecided on this issue anymore...?

So unless you've got some legislation for changing things, all this amounts to is a lot of hot air.

@16 -- thank you for your correction, but it is most certainly NOT a minor nitpick. It is a very significant and deeply meaningful difference in terms that goes to the very core of the meaning of that monarchical structure. The individual holding the title of "Your Majesty" is arrayed with a litany of consequential prerogatives and honours not shared by any other individual in the Royal Family or peerage.

Again, though, thanks. I have had to make the same correction here before. Tsk-tsk.

Rottweilers have been in the news a lot lately. I have heard of a few fatal attacks, one of which was in the U.S.

The GOP will have no problem going negative on Obama. I've heard the major chord already from my Republican coworkers: Obama is totally unqualified to be President, and that Democrats are only voting for him because of White Guilt. Having vilified a war hero four years ago, they'll have no problem playing the race card this time around.

Also, if Obama ever slept with a white woman or two, we'll see those on the news as well.

fiengold and boxer are not liberal....but republican conservative corporate whores in sheeps (read democrates) clothing......"unapologitic liberals" my ass. the only thing they stand on is fetus sucking and butt-fucking. apologies to my gay friends and members of my of board and know gay-rights and discrimination is a paramount issue....but as a vag-o-fucker I think it's been overblown as a political issue obscureing larger far more pressing issues (to poor semio straght trash like me at least) like healthcare, fighting the corporate oligarchy, lahbor rights and building a just society

obama may not be talking up his liberal points (understandable) but with those points on his resume I trust him more and find him more electable....unlike edwards whose campaghn tatic is polerization at the moment

Uhm... in my town the police shot the MAYOR's pit bull. Thank God the pit bull lived. The cops had gone into her yard (uninvited, unannouced) and shot the dog on her property. Sometimes the police are wrong and use their guns foolishly without provocation. (I know, kinda hard to believe)
