The whole concept of free speech seems to escape Mr. Donahue. Blasphemy is Constitutionally protected speech. Bringing back laws against blasphemy would be a dangerous step toward theocracy.

Donahue's been around FOREVER. It's only been in recent years that he's gotten any attention.

My Dad was a very devout Catholic, albeit of the Jesuit-y type, and he thought Donahue was a nutcase with only a handful of followers. (and you didn't even want to get him started on the evils of Opus Dei)

I don't know why Donahue is suddenly being given all this attention.

Donahue says that the ad agency would NEVER make an ad like this with Muslim women in veils; and I have to grudgingly admit that he's actually got a great idea. That would be a WAY better ad. Or at least, a way better piece of art.

But Muslim women in veils are not the cultural icon that Nuns in traditional habits are. Which is sort of ironic, since the vast majority of nuns gave up the outfits back in the '60's, but there you are.

I used to belong to Equinox. In complete honesty, half the guys at the 19th Street location looked like that. Not that any of the other guys noticed, but half the women were the female equivalent. If it weren't $130/month, they wouldn't need to advertise at all.

Why didn't they get upset about The Simpsons episode a few years ago? In that one, Homer attends the Superbowl and a commercial is shown where a bunch of sexy (presumably nuns) come out of a gas station to service a car. As they fill it with gas and wipe down its windshield, a crucifix pops out of the cleavage of one of them and a voice over says, "The Catholic Church....we've made a few changes." Where was the outrage? Think of the children!

at first i was confused. then i realized bill donahue ≠ phil donahue. btw, i wonder what PHIL would think of this? (and not DR. phil)

yeah, not having "amen" and filipina nuns in the ad were disappointing. agreed.

also, what if the genders were reversed, ie priests or brothers sketching a nun (and not a fake nun)?
