I don't think I've ever run into a 10-year-old while snowboarding, but that's impressive.

He'll be better than Dan in a year!

Posted by Mr. Poe | January 14, 2008 8:04 PM

Wow, lets all post home videos now. Savage sinks to an all time low here. Pimping out his own son to, well, do what?
You are fast becoming the Britney Spears of Seattle.
Stick to sucking cock.

Posted by sicfuc | January 14, 2008 8:04 PM

How the fuck is this pimping? How the fuck is this Britney Spears? He's on a snowboard, not a table of blow. Moron.

Posted by Mr. Poe | January 14, 2008 8:06 PM

*'s baby. Fuck!

Posted by Mr. Poe | January 14, 2008 8:06 PM

Oh, and sicfuc, feel free to post homevideos on your own blog, okay? I hear lots of people are using that nifty youtube thingy on the intertubes.

Posted by Michigan Matt | January 14, 2008 8:07 PM

Oh, one more thing. It's fucking awesome that you people out there live near the damn mountains. The MOUNTAINS. I mean, look around you! Lucky ducks. We have cornfields and Detroit, yo. Shit.

Posted by Michigan Matt | January 14, 2008 8:11 PM

Dear god, Dan. Are you really posting HOME MOVIES to SLOG now?

Posted by Ivan Cockrum | January 14, 2008 8:12 PM

I think the kid's juicing.

Posted by dirge | January 14, 2008 8:14 PM

I am somewhere between what #2 said and #7....... More upset than #7 but not to the point of calling Dan a pimp.

Posted by I have to say it | January 14, 2008 8:17 PM

You're so cute with your proud father routine. I say more vids. Rounds you out nicely.

Posted by stevens ho | January 14, 2008 8:18 PM

Yes. And you are required by law to come to this blog and watch it.

Posted by Dan Savage | January 14, 2008 8:18 PM

Awwwww. That was sweet.

I'm impressed though with the musical choice. Yup, no guitar sounds either. Now I'm wondering when Dan will start a hip hop column.

Posted by mackro mackro | January 14, 2008 8:20 PM

Dude. He's a fucking dad. Of course he's gonna post videos of his kid when he's proud of him. Every parent would do this if given the opportunity.

Posted by Gitai | January 14, 2008 8:23 PM

i think it's cute. i wish i didn't live in florida, where it's a freaking trip to go snow boarding. haven't been in about 5 years.

of course, it was also 80 degrees on friday, and i laid out in the park while reading and throwing a ball for my dog.

Posted by konstantConsumer | January 14, 2008 8:24 PM

He may FEEL like the kids dad, but he isn't.

He is as much a dad as those little cunts who walk around the city with their designer dogs whom they refer to as their "kids".

This is just self serving. A pathetic attempt to appear to be a doding father.

Posted by ecce homo | January 14, 2008 8:30 PM

Who picked the music, I wonder?

Posted by violet_dagrinder | January 14, 2008 8:30 PM

That's what's great about Slog: light rail, presidential politics, porn, and a video of one of the owner's kids snow boarding.
Weird but good.

Posted by lisa Gin | January 14, 2008 8:31 PM

wow, ecce homo. you manage to be more offensive and idiotic than usually.

nice work my friend.

Posted by konstantConsumer | January 14, 2008 8:40 PM

That's actually a backside rail slide, not frontside. Easily editable.

Posted by Heatmiser | January 14, 2008 8:43 PM

Kos posts pictures of his kids to his blog. Joshua Marshall posts picture of his kid to his blog. Atrios posts pictures of his cats to his blog. Aravosis posts pictures of his family at Christmas to his blog. Sullivan posts pictures of his beagles to his blog (also adopted, I presume). And on and on. I don't remember ever seeing Dan's son on Slog before.

One brief YouTube clip in, what, the three or more years that Slog been up and running? Can the haters give it a rest, please.

Your kid is quite the snowboarder, Dan. You must be proud. Which explains this post. Nothing explains or excuses the pathetic piece of shit that signs himself ecce homo.

Posted by Gay People Suck | January 14, 2008 8:45 PM

That was awesome!

Posted by Deacon Seattle | January 14, 2008 8:55 PM

Some of you people make me sick...

The guy just wanted to show off a video of his son doing something cool -what any proud father would do- and you wanna go and slam him for it?! That's complete and utter bullshit!

Oh, and while I'm at it...

@ 15:
OK, listen up you fucking asshole. I'm adopted. I was raised by two loving parents, and had it not been for them, God only knows where the fuck I would be now. Just because Dan's son is adopted, doesn't make Dan any less of a father. I don't know who the hell my birth father is, but that's fine by me, because I don't really give a shit. I was raised by a kind and generous man who was 10 times the father some of these sorry excuses for parents I see nowadays are. Just because Dan's sperm didn't create this kid, that had nothing with the love he feels for his son and his abilities as a father.

So for anyone who feels the need to slam poor Dan just for doing something any ordinary dad would do -be proud of his son- here's a tip: shut your fucking mouth and keep your derogatory comments to yourselves, bitches.

Posted by Courtney | January 14, 2008 8:58 PM

For all you know Dan, I'm required to be here. By law.

Posted by Mr. Poe | January 14, 2008 8:59 PM

Wow, ecce actually has some competition with teh hate.

Bring it on sicfuc, show ecce who's the hatin'est hater in hateville.

Posted by COMTE | January 14, 2008 9:02 PM

Oh ecce, you lovable child-molesting troll, you just try too hard.

Posted by tsm | January 14, 2008 9:10 PM

This is such a nice group of people.

Posted by Ryan | January 14, 2008 9:11 PM

If that was my kid, I'd be fucking so proud I would pop. No wonder my parents drank.

Nice work, Mr. Savage...that kid is on FIRE.

PS -- ecce, sic...I'm going to recite my favorite school bus chant for you:

Eat me raw
Skin and balls
Don't stop there,
Eat my hair.
Save my sac
For a midnight snack.

Neener, neener, neeeeeeeeener!

Posted by Jubilation T. Cornball | January 14, 2008 9:19 PM

@19 No. He is going frontside. In snowboarding the name describes how you arrive on the rail, not which direction you are facing. So he arrived on the rail from the front, (watch that bit that says "ollie up" he turns forward 90 degrees into it), meaning even though his back is to the bottom of the rail, he is going "frontside".

Railslide? That stance is almost always called a boardslide. Weight evenly distributed on both sides of the rail.

Here is an exact description of what savage's kid did:

They call it a "frontside boardslide to fakie".

Switch/fakie same dif.

There aren't many teens doing this as well as this kid does.

Good job little shredder!

Posted by lineout fan | January 14, 2008 9:21 PM

Totally lame. Seriously.

What's next.. footage of a piano recital?

Posted by Totally lame. | January 14, 2008 9:21 PM

No, the next vid is going to be of the kid "hanging" with the sisters of Perpetual Endulgence and knocking back jello shooters at a local night spot.

Posted by ecce homo | January 14, 2008 9:25 PM

Useful skill I suppose if he ever finds himself being chased by brigands with a narrow box over a chasm and lunch tray as his only means of escape.

Posted by kinaidos | January 14, 2008 9:31 PM

This is fine. It's short, it doesn't parade his face in front of all of us and it shows a cool snowboard move. What's the problem people? On the other hand, I'm not sure I'd want my kid's video up here with the porn convention pictures.....but that's just me.

Posted by M | January 14, 2008 9:31 PM

@19 He's riding on the front side of the board, i.e. on his toes. I presume that makes it a "front side slide".

Posted by booji boy | January 14, 2008 9:31 PM

I blame all this bile and hatred on... Hillary Clinton! For creating an environment where otherwise compassionate and neighborly folks like Ecce and sicfuc feel the need to become worthless dingleberries just to stay competitive! When will her reign of evil end?!?

Cool pics, Dan. Wish I could that those moves.

Posted by Big Sven | January 14, 2008 9:42 PM

People aren't people; in the media. Even the people that are tangentially related to people in the media. If you could make blog comments about every parent's choice would you? No. You attention whores. Just admit that you want the eyes on you; redemption or what have you. Stick it up your ass.

Posted by Natalie | January 14, 2008 10:04 PM

Cute ^_^ Congrats, Dan!

Also, way to elevate the discussion, ecce. If you had a child, you'd understand (actually, I pray you don't have children).

Posted by paul | January 14, 2008 10:09 PM

I like the kid videos.

Can I just mention that maybe if you had to register an account here instead of anonymous posting, there would be less garbage? Some dudes will stop at nothing, but the noise level could be a lot lower.

Posted by elenchos | January 14, 2008 10:14 PM

Wow - who knew that posting a short vid of your kid would be so controversial?

Posted by Nandor | January 14, 2008 10:16 PM

Actually, my "old man" and myself have two children.

Neither is adopted.

Posted by ecce homo | January 14, 2008 10:19 PM

I don't normally feed trolls, but fuck you and your stand on adopted versus biological parents.

I take back the nice things I said about how you should come to SLOG night. Show up, and I will disassemble you.

Posted by Big Sven | January 14, 2008 10:25 PM

@14 I live in Eugene, Oregon, where I'm just a couple of hours away from any number of great snowboarding places, but where we don't see the sun all winter. I'll trade you Oregon with snowboarding for 80 degrees and sunny without snowboarding. :)

I thought that was adorable. Do all of you really give a shit about whether he posts a cute video of the kid doing something none of you can do? Grow up.

Posted by Jo | January 14, 2008 10:32 PM

ecce...whoeverhomo you are.. (please tell me you're not a regular slogger just trying to kick up shit) ..... it's "doting" father, not "doding" ... dumbass!!!

Posted by M | January 14, 2008 10:33 PM

@ 39

assuming your both gay, you and your "old man", then you both can't legally "have" your kids unless one of you did a second parent adoption.

which would mean you are totally full of shit.

now everyone, repeat after me, ignore the troll....

Posted by lineout fan | January 14, 2008 10:37 PM

ecce homo is a woman??? is this possible? i've not been following said troll long enough... but from what i recall ecce never gave enough info to know really....

Posted by M | January 14, 2008 10:41 PM

Second parent adoption is not remotely the same as picking up a catalog of orphans and choosing which one matches your handbag better.

Posted by ecce homo | January 14, 2008 10:44 PM

so your kids are adopted! you fucking hypocrite! you suck ecce!!!

ha ha ha

those poor fuckers. bet their all snaggle toothed and ridden with hemorrhoids like their good old dad and his "old man"!

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

Posted by ha ha ha ha ha ha | January 14, 2008 10:50 PM

Rock on, little dude!

Dan, just remember that it takes 10 porn convention pix to undo the damage caused by one cute kid video clip.

Posted by midwaypete | January 14, 2008 10:52 PM

@45 You don't know as much about Dan as you think. He did an open adoption (it's in his book, you know, the one about adoption dipshit.) Which means the birthmother picked him and his partner.

He didn't "pick" his son. They were chosen by the mother.

Posted by lineout fan | January 14, 2008 10:55 PM

RainMan said he doesn't talk to idiots so he asked me to tell someone named Itchy Homer to go fuck himself.

I don't know what he's talking about but it must have something to do with the Simpsons. RainMan has been watching that show for way too long...

Posted by RainMan's Private Secretary | January 14, 2008 10:56 PM

@ 45 - what exactly do you have against adoptive parents? Do you have any proof that adoptive parents are less caring/loving/competent as parents, or is this is just some inane and petty crusade?

Posted by UnoriginalAndrew | January 14, 2008 11:00 PM

nice vid, the kid's got style.
its a backside slide though, cause his back side is facing the fall line.

Posted by micah | January 14, 2008 11:05 PM

C'mon, sicfuc! ecce has at least four whiny, assinine, self-absorbed, Log Cabin Republican leaning, neo-Puritanical hate comments to your one! Are you going to just let him walk away with the crown as "SLOG's biggest Santorum-guzzling douchebucket" without putting up so much as a fight?

And I had such high hopes for ya', kid.

Posted by COMTE | January 14, 2008 11:13 PM

That's awesome! Props to the kid.

Posted by Vasya | January 14, 2008 11:15 PM

i ecce homo a female? a she-male??? what/???

Posted by M | January 14, 2008 11:17 PM

M, maybe ecce homo has some sort of Victor/Victoria thing going--a woman pretending to be a man pretending to be a woman, or something like that.

Posted by Ecce Enim Ex Hoc Beatam Me Dicent Omnes Generationes | January 14, 2008 11:27 PM

Vigorous snowboarding, eh? That's at least 400 calories/hr. ; )

Hooray for getting out there and having fun!

Posted by CP | January 14, 2008 11:42 PM

that was frickin' cool. Thanks Dan. And Ecce and sicfuc should go blow each other and then do a huge dose of phenobarbs.

Posted by gnossos | January 14, 2008 11:55 PM

Ecce Homo, you bile-dripping turd. As a parent of 2 kids who were adopted (open adoptions, both) and one biological kid, and as someone who was around before, during and after Little Shredder's adoption, I know whereof I speak: Dan and Mr. Miller are as fine a set of parents as they come.

Do you have a clue what it means to be a parent? You think it's about replicating your miserable genes, leaving some sort of legacy, dragging your defects downline, hoping for something better one of these generations? It's about the kids, moron, a great many of whom would spend their childhoods in the State system (paid for by taxpayers), were it not for people with the guts to adopt. If you had an atom of compassion in your god-forsaken being, you might not find it such a lark to dump on couples (and singles, for that matter), gay, straight or indifferent, who, for one reason or another, can't simply breed their way to parenting, and turn to adoption, and discover by necessity what you evidently never have--parents are parents because they raise kids, not because they spawn them. If you have any questions, let me know, and I'll introduce you to my living, breathing, laughing, loving, struggling, striving, thriving "handbags," 16 and 14, who can definitely teach you a thing or two.

On second thought, I don't want you anywhere near them.

I know, I know--trolls, feeding, etc. Sorry.

And for everyone else on here, repeat after me--adoption is an event, not an affliction. Thus, "he was adopted." Not "he is adopted."

Posted by fixo | January 15, 2008 12:02 AM

Ecce, I think you just crossed out of any zone of decency. Unless you sat down with Dan and Terry and spoke with them several times throughout their adoption process you've got no fucking idea why or how they came to the decision to adopt.

My parents adopted a baby boy a few years back. He's not biologically related to any of us, in any way. His mother has no legal rights to him, and she doesn't know who his father is. That baby is my brother. He is as much my parents' child as I am. Not because of blood, or anything so ridiculous as an accident of birth, but because we choose to love him every single day.

Second parent adoption is a good thing too, but to your husband's child you're just as much a father as Dan is to DJ, or as my dad is to my little brother. How much is that?

Love is what matters in whether or not a person is family. I don't know Dan or Terry, so I can't tell you how much they love DJ, but I know my dad still has pictures I drew for him when I was three and just this weekend we added a picture my little brother drew for dad to that scrap book.

So yeah, my point is that you've got no idea about what's going through the Savage Family's minds so you've got no right to go spouting the bull shit you do. Beyond that your adopting your husband's child is the same as Dan adopting DJ or any other adoption. You're a man who has no biological relationship to that child.

Why do you love that child? Do you love them for themselves? For the years of interaction you had with them? Watching them grow and learn and change and take on characteristics from your husband, from you, from other relations?

Or do you love that baby because your husband donated the sperm that caused that baby to come into this world? Do you love that baby because of who its father is?

Posted by Phelix | January 15, 2008 12:13 AM

That said, Dan, your son has a hell of a lot more talent at that than I'll ever even hope to have. Kudos.

Posted by Phelix | January 15, 2008 12:22 AM

Poe is being nice to Dan?!!

I think the kid must be ill.

Posted by NapoleonXIV | January 15, 2008 1:01 AM

Cute kid, Dan Savage! :) Love the podcast. Wish I lived in Seattle.

Posted by Ben Elrod | January 15, 2008 1:40 AM

That video is awesome! I'm jealous- I wish I could do that!

And adoption is awesome too.

Unless of course the prospective adoptive parent is anything like ecce - then abortion is the way to go. No child should grow up with that.

Posted by clarity | January 15, 2008 2:03 AM

Sweet! I wish I had learned to ski or snowboard when I was younger. It's scarier when your head is a few more feet from the ground. Way to go, DJ, and the dads for teaching him.

Posted by StotheL | January 15, 2008 6:17 AM

wow! is DJ going to be on the olympic snowboarding team in 2010? does stinker snowboard, too?

more vids of this amazing kid, dad, please.

Posted by scary tyler moore | January 15, 2008 6:46 AM

Parents who put kids in the public limelight are wrong. The kid has no choice. The kid has to please the parent, right? No matter how "eager" the kid is to have his pix on the internet, he really has no choice.

Nothing to do with adopted or not.

Posted by shuddup | January 15, 2008 7:28 AM

DJ rocks! So does Mount Bachelor... That was awesome.

Posted by Jim C. | January 15, 2008 8:03 AM

The kid's great --- why not post it? I was glad to see it. Where else would I happen into a bit of snowboarding while reading the word-heavy sites I favor? Wish I had the talent myself.

Posted by Jennifer | January 15, 2008 8:07 AM

Was this just a test to determine if the Slog should disable commenting once and for all?

Cool video -- I hope my ten year old son doesn't see it because I can't afford for him to take up snowboarding.

Posted by Awesome | January 15, 2008 8:14 AM

I need to defend my marriage now.

Posted by phanofdan | January 15, 2008 8:39 AM

ecce homo was a closet case who got married and had kids in order to cure himself of the gay. Then he got caught in one too many washroom incidents and now he's a gay dad. You couldn't have invented somebody more anathema to Savage's pet issues if you had sat down an intentionally tried to make up a character to be a thorn in Dan's side...

...Oh. Wait...

Posted by elenchos | January 15, 2008 8:47 AM

Don't listen to Heatmiser he's clueless - Although technically its a Frontside Boardslide to fakie....or as a true aficionado would say "front board to fakie..." Whatever you call it - its was dope and well executed.

Posted by sasquatch | January 15, 2008 9:09 AM

@38 Dan had to know that this would get some negative attention. There's always someone out there willing to criticize what he puts up (including me).

That said, this rules. It's like seeing the real Dan Savage and not the one he's created for the media. The man should be proud of his kid and when he does something cool, tell people about it. Too bad he can't show the kid the post thanks to sick fucks like sicfuc and ecce.

Posted by Charlie | January 15, 2008 10:35 AM

Putting the video up on YouTube was DJ's idea. His friends post videos of themselves to YouTube doing silly shit all the time. And I posted it here because 1. I think he rocks and 2. you can't see his face. We try to keep DJ's face out of the papers, off TV, etc.

And, actually, I didn't think there would be tons of negative attention. What's to object to here exactly? Plus it was the middle of the night--posted from South Carolina, so three hours later than the time stamp--and I figured, "what the hell?"

Posted by Dan Savage | January 15, 2008 10:39 AM

I just have to point out that DJ has way more style than the skier behind him. For such a tiny little kid, he rips. Go DJ!

Posted by Irena | January 15, 2008 10:49 AM

It's a nice video, Dan. Ignore the whiners.

Posted by M | January 15, 2008 12:09 PM

Nothing to object to at all. The kid looks like he's having fun, and is talented enough not to break his neck.

What more could you want?

Posted by NapoleonXIV | January 15, 2008 12:13 PM

Put that kid on a skateboard!

Posted by ZWBush | January 15, 2008 12:24 PM

And buy him some tattoos!

Posted by NapoleonXIV | January 15, 2008 12:37 PM

Those are some slick moves, DJ. I'm damn impressed.

Posted by CheshireKatz | January 15, 2008 12:43 PM

Man, I wish I could do stunts like that. Too bad I have a tendency to break ankles walking on the sidewalk. :p Mad props to DJ, and anyone who objects to Dan's burst paternal pride should get a wet snowball to the back of the head. Or possible a front-side-ollie-flipper-whatever.

Posted by Beth | January 15, 2008 12:53 PM

Well put, Phelix @59. And at the risk of jinxing it, I think that speech managed to shut Ecce up! DJ definitely has talent. Even if I didn't live in a state that never really snows, I still probably wouldn't be able to do that stuff. I'm just way to clumsy! You should definitely be proud of your son, Dan!
