SPD HAS NOT cleared Sierra Club Volunteer

posted by on January 3 at 11:53 AM

This morning, the Seattle Times reported that the Seattle Police Department had cleared a Sierra Club volunteer in their investigation of Shannon Harps’ murder.

However, SPD spokeswoman Renee Witt, who’s quoted in the Times article, says that’s not true. “That was a misquote. I did not say that,” Witt says.

SPD says they’re still receiving tips about the case and they haven’t ruled anyone out as a suspect.

Again, the number for SPD”s tip line is (206) 233-5000

UPDATE:

Earlier today, I called to confirm that the SPD had cleared the volunteer. Initially, I spoke with SPD spokesman Mark Jamieson, who would neither confirm or deny that the volunteer had been cleared. Later, I called back to talk to Renee Witt about her quote in the Times, and she defensively told me she’d been “misquoted.”

Well, SPD Spokeswoman Renee Witt just called to tell me that she “misspoke” when she told me she had been misquoted in the Times. However, Witt also told me that no suspects have been cleared.

The SPD has been remarkably tight-lipped about this case, and it appears that they let something slip when they shouldn’t have. But, with all the backpedaling, it sure sounds like the Sierra Club volunteer has been cleared.

"Mr. Frizzelle? Mr. Jewell hung up. But he said he might be calling back. Maybe."

Sounds like Ms. Witt is doing a little backtracking here. I'm guessing she let slip something she wasn't supposed to.

It came out in the PI first. So would that be twice that Witt misspoke?

There's nothing remarkable about the police being "tight-lipped" during the first few days of a homicide investigation.

Okay, this seemed obvious to me when I heard he was being sought as a "witness" and not a "suspect." You'd really like someone to turn themselves in, and claim to be a witness and make up a story. Then, you actually find the evidence to convict them. But, in the meantime, if they are guilty and are being sought as a "suspect," they'll more than likely skip town.

Anyways, it makes sense that they would try to make nice. And, don't forget, the cops can lie through the teeth to you to get you to talk.

Chrissakes, am I the only loser who watches Law and Order? One connection leads you to the next. Then you are picked up taken downtown. Finally, two sexy middle aged detectives make you break like the whore you are.

I hope they catch this asshole. Capitol Hill is my neighborhood and I live close to this horrendous murder. I have been constantly carrying an weapon on me for a better part of year for the increased violence issues in Capitol Hill (which SPD confirms). Cue the Law & Order hits.

I got mugged and attacked recently, just two blocks from where this happened. I called the police on my cell, which luckily didn't get stolen, and we drove around looking for the suspect. He however did not fit the description for this incident. I really hope they increase police presence on 15th between John and Madison, especially around that 7-11.

@pissed:ARM yourself! Get a TASER, or better yet get a Glock9. Even the craziest derelicts will shy away from someone once they realize that person is armed.
