Damn, I was wondering what that noise was. I thought is was just the nail gun from the guys building the houses next door. Fuck.
I was buying beer at the gas station on that corner last weekend. The police were interviewing the clerk, and I overheard them ask, "Can you show me exactly where this guy bit you?"
That's got to be the most violent corner in the entire city.
Maybe if they called it Capitol Valley then folks would be as safe there as on Capitol Hill... oh.. wait - Nevermind.
If the shooters play football for U of W they will never be arrested.
Fun, I'm moving a couple blocks from there next week.
Like I said on the other thread, it looks like again, the scourge of young black male perpetuated violence haunts the city.
And apparently the owner of the resteraunt where the 2 guys were shot, was killed a while back in another shooting.
How come this doesn't happen on sand point?
ya know, the philly cheesesteaks ARE good, but not worth killing each other to get the last one...
Actually, those cheese steaks are wretched. The Philly cheese steak place on Madison is far superior.
As a Philadelphia native, I can categorically state that the cheese steaks at both places suck, and are plastic replicas of the Real Thing.
D'Allesandro's on Henry Avenue, just north of Walnut Lane. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM! That is just a 5 hour flight away.
I agree with the above, the West Coast has no clue how to make a cheese steak that is worth gaining the 10 pounds of lard in your ass that a really good one is worth.
As a Seattle transplant, I can categorically state that Philly natives suck. If you loved your wretched city so much...
Gunshot assault volume usually goes up in the warmer months. This is going to be a big, bad year.
a debate over cheese steak is exactly what one could expect from the comments on a post about within-the-hour gun violence.
good work, sloggers.
More Canadian on Canadian violence.
When will it ever stop?
I'm sure some will be glad to see that the neighborhood hasn't gentrified to the point where all if its rich cultural heritage is gone.
Oh great, only 11 comments in, and we've already run off the rails into a snark on the relative merits of local Philly Cheesesteaks (which, as someone who's had them on both coasts, I can avouch - flame away! - taste pretty much the same where ever you go. He said, glancing at the photo of himself standing outside Geno's, "Wiz With" in-hand. Seriously, it's just beefsteak, onions, peppers, and artificial cheese glop on a hoagie roll - how could it NOT taste basically the same?).
Back to the topic at-hand: I guess I must be getting used to this, seeing as my first response to the news was, "Geez, they shot-up Thompson's AGAIN? What? Oh, it was the OTHER restaurant on that corner."
I don't know why SPD doesn't just permanently park one of those "mobile command units" or whatever they call those Winnebago's right there, like they've done periodically in the past. So much shit goes down at that intersection that it probably has its own filing cabinet at East Precinct.
Have to agree, there's nothing like a real Philly cheesesteak.
But Hoagies are still better on game day at Swarthmore.
Why can't young black men just shoot cans?
Why are they so violent?
Question: Did they ever catch who shot the original owners of this place?
Seriously...whatever happened to fist fights?
I still think we should just have one big hip hop night at a huge club with thick concrete walls. Guns will be encouraged, and there will be free booze. Once the place gets packed, just lock the doors for a few hours and the problem will sort itself out.
@6 - A couple of blocks in any direction from that intersection is a universe away. Regardless, I still feel perfectly safe using the post office or buying vodka at the liquor store there.
relax.. crime is waayyyy down in this city. shit does happen from time to time. its a big city. i dont think this is the worst corner in the city. i give that title to the corner of rainier and henderson after 8 pm.
not to go ogg topic, but as a north philly temple loving, dr j admiring, bullet ducking diamond st shot caller, i can honestly say that the old philly cheese steak owner kept it real, dude even brought the cheap buns from south philly. after he got killed, the quality went down FASSSSSST!
@23, wouldn't nothing happen, as gun advocates proclaim, if everyone had guns there would be less murder?
off topic. ogggg
so somebody shot up somebody's house in west seattle, and the 2nd somebody knew enough to go over to the CD to a specific restaurant at a specific time to shoot the 1st somebody?
cellphones are awesome!
Don't the two racist scum bags who haunt this blog have a KKK meeting to attend or something.
Idiots, guns and racists. What a combo.
I say ban guns from society and ban the racists from this blog.
because bans don't work.
if the assumptions regarding the ethnicity of shooter &/or vicitm of the "racists" on this blog are correct, would that mean anything to you?
So they finally realized we have a gang problem in Seattle? Wow.
Oh Seattle, you're so cute when you try to be all gangsta and shit with your stabbings and shootings. I just want to pinch your rosy little cheeks!
I think if Seattle were a person it would be an asian baby gangster and it would drive a cute little purple honda with a really big spoiler and one of those silly tail pipes that sounds like a playground full of children farting.
I love this town...
"Gutt says agents have just completed the first month of the program."
they arrived at the scene and popped a bottle of champagne and were like, "happy one month, you guys!"
While it is presumptuous to assume that the suspect is black, have you ever been to 23rd and Union? There are more black people around that intersection than any other race, so statistically speaking there's a better chance that the shooter was black than any other race. So it is presumptuous because the facts aren't in yet, but it's hardly racist.
The PI must be racist too then:
The gunman was described as a black male who fled in a dark colored sedan.
Cop in the first pic is CA-YUTE!
Come on, its not presumptious or racist to suppose the susepct(s) are black. two reasons:
1). The recent rash of shootings in this town have been exclusively by young black males.
2) The police announced immediately that they are looking for a young black male.
It is really pathetic when being all soft and cuddly, pc, and in the name of "diversity", we don't talk about the real problems in our communities and how to fix them. The risk of being offensive to a bunch of mush headed twenty somethings who suffer from years of public education, is worth it to me. The truth is that we have a serious problem in our young urban black population and it is getting worse. We need to do what we can to fix it. But we won't be able to fix it if everytime someone brings it up, they are accused of racism.
how dare they compare a black man to a car? the idea that all black people are as fast as cars is racist through and through!
For serious? That cop is totally NOT cute! There's this one realy large black cop with a shaved head. That cop is SUPER hot!
@39 I admit that I was cynically trying to up the anty on snark =D
I love snarkiness. I wish you could put it in a giant box, tie a big pink ribbon around it and give to people for Christmas.
I was just musing to my co-worker what a bunch of heartless assholes we are in Seattle/Cap Hill. Is it wrong that it makes me smile?
I'm in full agreement. But you see that is part of the problem.
We have those here who believe that if you call a spade a spade, then you a racist. Don't let the facts get in their way...
They'd rather point fingers and be all PC on the issue, rather than state facts.
Edit: I just read Ecce Homo's post @ 37, and he is spot on the money on his assessment.
Until we have liberal folks like
@ 29 Thanks Poster Girl for proving my point.
Are you back on your meds, ecce? 'Cause I have to say, your last couple of posts have actually kind of made sense.
I mean, geez, I can actually discern a teensy inkling of honest-to-goodness compassion pushing up like a tiny green sprout through the cracked concrete of your usual insoucient cynicism.
What's up with that?
Witnesses are describing the suspect as a black male in his 20's wearing a puffy parka jacket, dark pants, dark hat, driving a black 02/03 Lincoln Contental with gold rims and very dark tint last headed north on 23rd, Washington Plates: 210 XMJ.
I'll bet his system was cranking the Be Good Tanyas during his escape.
It would be ironic if it wasn't so pathetic.
I just drove by there an hour ago and saw all the cop cars idling around.
must be that overabundance of "liberal guilt" ecce is so well known for around here. yeah, thats it.
Damn, he had a Lincoln? I want a Lincoln! But I would get chrome rims, not gold. Gold is too old school for me. I prefer to look krispy when I'm ridin dirty and goin dumb at the sideshow...
I'm pretty embarrassed that a thread about two people getting shot temporarily devolved into a cheese steak debate. Time and place for everything folks.
Dude's name is Rey, not Ray. Just saying. Culturally insensitive.
Does anyone in support of gun bans here really believe this gangsta would not have carrie a gun to that location, and would not have shot the other man simply because there was a ban on guns?
Really? So this criminal would have said "Ohh Gee thats right. We now have a ban on guns. I better not break the law and shoot anyone."
Really? What would have happened instead? Do tell....
Looks like a future business leader of America.
Wow, what a great guy.
Lock him up for the rest of his life and spare the rest of us from his brutishness.
#23- you are right. I would have deplored your comment before moving to the CD many, many years ago. But really- a gang member shooting a gang member...where's the tragedy?
Can't we all just get along???
Nah, phuchit....blow'em all away and let the supreme being of your choice sort'em all out...
Between the all the damn PC crap, the overly liberal whiners and the crime/gangs getting out of control here, what used to be a nice place to live is quickly turing into a politically correct cesspool... UGH!
I walked down to the PO at the intersection in question at 2:30pm. I've had the radio on all afternoon and yet hadn't heard anything about the shooting. Might be nice if they'd mentioned this on an hour break or something, if our friend is still at large.
In any case, the police have it locked down like a terrorist attack. You can't really even get through the intersection.
Glad I didn't drive.
It's funny. The original article I found about this online says it happened in Capitol Hill... now it says it's the Central District. So which is it?
The cops are crawling all over Delridge...they are definitely looking for someone over here in West Seattle.
FYI My mom got through to take my 4 month old to Gymboree. It's a great neighborhood that happens to have some "real city" sketch.
A better topic to get off track on than quality of the cheesesteaks in the neighborhood might be the quality of TT minor. Give these kids a shot (pun intended?) so they don't think of gangs as an option and gang members as role models.
@50, you must be new here. Let me be the first to welcome you to the internet. I hope you enjoy your stay.
And really everyone knows the best cheesesteak is Subway's Steak and Cheese.
Just my 2 cents- I live on 24th about 2 blocks form there and the fact that a cop came by and told my kids to get inside isn't really funny. Seattle is a way less violent city than the East Coast where I am from. But in the 2 years I have lived in the Central District (and Capitol Hill & Wallingford befor that) - visible crime has gone WAY up. It may be down city wide, but that is a hard thing to explain to a 6 year old afraid at night.
I wish we could just eliminate the term "politically correct" (aka PC). It's become a shortcut for whatever the person using it doesn't agree with. It's a lazy, hackneyed, Fox News-y sort of term, wielded by both liberals and conservatives, but meaning nothing.
WHY IS ANYONE DEBATING "PC"?
In any case I think gang members should be free to kill each other.
The only victims are the people caught in the crossfire.
We should have gang member kill gang member day. Exterminate yourselves assholes.
@61 I lived in Chicago for ten years and I'd have to say (as you hint at) that Seattle seems like the kiddie pool by comparison, but sorry for your bad luck.
At least the cops warned you to stay inside! When I went near the intersection today, all the police stayed all snuggly in their cars. No one seemed interested in interacting with me at all. But, that's procedure, I guess... don't want to get bogged down with civilians.
Finally, word of the shooting hits the update on the NPR station I listen to. That only took a few hours.
Amanda, why do parents complain about explaining things in the adult world? isnt that the job of a parent? isnt that what you signed up to do? explain the world to the little person you brought into the world?
i'd explain it like this "bad things happen that you can't control, so you really should live in fear of bad things. and if a bad thing ever happens to you tell me so I can help you with it."
Technically the cheesestake place is on Capitol Hill. E. Union represents the border between CapHill to the north, and Squire Park (part of the larger conglomerate of neighborhoods collectively known as "the Central District") to the south.
For starters, why don't they enforce the already existing law against dark-tinted windows? Dark-tinted windows are pretty much a guarantee of illegal activity inside, and they terrify bicyclists.
And of course, by "cheesestake" I mean "cheesesteak"...
fnarf, this is one thing that kind of impressed me when i moved up here; the tint of the windows was so freaking dark and nothing was done about it
Fnarf, I disagree. Dark tint is sexy and deters break-ins (my Cap Hill neighborhood safety officer told me that second bit).
I know i'll get shit for saying this but I hope the SPD does their work and effectively take this fucker out so it'll save us, the taxpayers, the cost of locking him, all the legal costs associated with the trial, and housing him in prison for the rest of his life.
thanks for clearing that up for me... Capitol Hill seems to shrink and expand depending on who you ask!
@68 Cap Hill ends at Madison. Philadelphia Cheese Steak is in the Burner Triangle, if you're a partyin hippie, or the Central Neighborhood, if you're Jean Tinnea, or just the Central District. Dom was trying to change the name of this neighborhood a while back, remember?
I still think Thompson's Point is the best name for the neighborhood, personally.
Dark tint is illegal, but it's too easy to defeat in court -- how dark is too dark?
Sexy, AKH? Really? It's a road hazard. You can't see what the driver is doing. If you're a cyclist, dark tinted windows mean "I'm probably going to open this motherfucking car door right in your face, and you'll have no idea until you're airborne". I don't see how they deter breakins, but I do know that neighborhood safety officers are completely full of crap. According mine here in Wallingford where I work, every car gets broken into every day, every passerby on the street is a mentally-ill random killer, and your life is hanging by a thread no matter what you do. This, despite Wallingford being in reality the safest goddamn neighborhood in the USA. They're scaremongers.
"A better topic to get off track on than quality of the cheesesteaks in the neighborhood might be the quality of TT minor. Give these kids a shot (pun intended?) so they don't think of gangs as an option and gang members as role models."
@60 - Blaming TT Minor for gang trouble is irresponsible and detrimental to the many great kids (and their parents) that attend that school. The principal, Mrs Brown, has worked hard to raise standards and provide a safe environment for the children there. I should know, my daughter attends kindergarten there, and is excelling at all levels. When we heard that our daughter had been assigned to that school we freaked out because we believed the bullshit that had been fed to us by our (white) neighbors, but after visiting the school and talking at length to Mrs Brown and other faculty members I was forced to acknowledge that whatever the school was eight years ago, it's a very different place now. I was and am ashamed at my negative reaction to a school that I myself had no experience of other than hearsay. TT Minor had a deservedly bad reputation and that reputation has been turned around through an influx of private donations and the hiring of very dedicated staff. There are kids there who undoubtedly come from unstable homes and the school is very aware of that and it works hard to ensure that while at school they can be children and enjoy the stability, routine and education that all children deserve. TT Minor is not the problem here.
Why is no one talking about gang members any more?
What the heck does TT Minor have to do with this?
What do tinted windows have to do with it?
This is a stupid, obviously gang related shooting!
Why can't we come together and decry this stupid, idiotic gang violence????
Wow. It's really hard to know where to begin. Whether it's the flippant handling of a serious situation (cheesesteak! tinted windows!), the deep seated irrational fear (I still feel safe going to the post office in the middle of the day), or the blatant, absolutely unbelievable racism (black men = hip hop = guns = violence = loud sound systems = gangs = 23rd and union), there is almost too much to handle.
Frankly, 90% of the people on this message board make me alternate between wanting to cry and wanting to go beserk. How is it possible that so many of us (I include myself in the online proto-world of blogs) can find it within ourselves to look at a tragedy, and a larger social issue, and boil it down to simple dumbshit reactions?
It's a big complicated world, and in the non-online reality, you all probably have to acknowledge that on a daily basis. Don't blow off that experience and revert to bigoted bullshit as soon as you sit down to a keyboard.
Seriously. And yes, people on this thread are being racist. If you're one of those people, accept it and deal with it.
Beachhead, you are a fucking idiot.
Sorry Ecce, nope.
Truth hurts sometimes. If you want to actually discuss it, great. If not, I hope you have fun dealing with your own shit.
To no. 79:
It's a known fact that internet + anonymitiy = misanthropic assholes
or maybe most of these posters have been on 4chan too long. Either way, most of us have been desensitized to this sort of violence. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? I don't know. What I do know is that trying to find some mysterious overarching philisophical reason for poor people shooting other poor people in a 2nd-rate Philly Cheesesteak restaurant often leads to associating "The Man" with it somehow.
Being desensitized to violence and anarchy may dull you to the pain of makind, but it also takes away the power of those who wish to use violence as a show of force.
Only someone trying to sell their house would would refer to 23rd and Union as Capital Hill.
Jesus, don't you people know your Sir Mix-a-Lot?
Dude shoots at his gf's place. Dude drives across town to shoot at the Philly Cheesesteak place.
I don't see "gang violence" anywhere in there.
How much you want to be the Philly Cheesesteak guy is somehow related to the girlfriend?
Time for a trip to ye olde firearms shoppe.
It beez racizm!
YT opresshum makes all dem black men kill duh otha black men!
The answer to your question would likely be decried as racism by the liberal turds on this blog.
The truth is that contemporary black society is incredibly morally bankrupt, glorifies superficiality, is populated by uneducated thugs, and above all else is INCREDIBLY VIOLENT. A black kid doesn't even have to be in a gang for them to justify being a gun toting dirtbag. The only way to combat this problem is to increase police presence in black neighborhoods until every black person is more familiar with the local beat cop than snoop dog dog, or DJ snazzy rev jizz.
And this is different from WHITE SOCIETY, exactly HOW?
I think it's time for you to take another pill...
TV news channels are reporting that the man who was shot, and later died, was either the owner or manager of the restaurant. He was an Ethiopian immigrant who had lived in Seattle for several years. He got married four months ago and was working to bring his wife from Ethopia. Very likely a completely innocent bystander.
White society doesn't have even close the level of physical violence that the blacks have.
Or are you stupid enough to say otherwise?
A heavily armed black man wearing a puffy jacket and driving a Lincoln Continental.
Just as I suspected when I heard there was a shooting in the CD.
I believe that Madison becomes the southern border of Capital Hill at 14th, slicing off and CD-ing that triangle formed between Madison, Union, and 23rd (Cap. Hill's eastern border.)
@82, I'm not sure if people are naturally sensitized to violence they don't witness, that concerns no one they know, and has no affect on their lives.
In fact to some extent the media works to oversensitize us to such things. Witness Princess Di and the legions who had difficulty functioning after her death.
Mebby dey beez celebruhmatin Black Histoyry Mumf early.
I was trying to move the conversation in a direction away from cheesesteaks (I like the mushroom steak at tat's if anyone cares) to something I thought was more relevant to violence and more productive to discuss- education standards in elementary schools in poor neighborhoods for the most at risk kids in our city. If you feel that ranking in the bottom 20% of Seattle public schools last year is doing great then we have nothing to discuss (and this is their best stat of 3rd grade reading, not their worst of 64 out of 69 for 5th grade math). Because if this is "turned around" we obviously have vastly different standards.
But maybe I'm missing your point. Maybe the "hard work" of the staff is all that is needed and these kids don't need to compete with their peers across the city or the country. And I'm sure that there is no inverse relationship between quality education/academic success and violent crime. I would probably be doing my neighborhood and local school a disservice by trying to shed light on the fact that these kids are not succeeding compared to their peers in more affluent areas. And I am most certain I am doing a disservice to my community by saying we should talk about it and figure out if there is something that can be done to help this school and these kids out.
where's the tragedy? come on! perhaps the victim wasn't an innocent bystander, but that doesn't mean it should be regarded as an unimportant, painless death. somebody died! and the real tragedy is that the people involved, both the shooter and the victim[s] never became productive members of society, the individual who died now will never have the chance. the tragedy began when they gave up on possibility and joined a gang, and sadly this the case for far too many adolescents in society, especially those in minority groups. america's cities troubles with gangs are nothing but tragic, and seattle is lucky it doesn't have to face many of the problems posed by gang violence as other cities in the US. i am from NY, and have taught in city schools there and witnessed tragedy at its finest among these teenaged students. let's be sensitive to the death of another human being, even if the violence was brought upon one's self due to affiliation with a gang or whatnot. it's important to care about other people, even if their tragedies and problems don't apply to us or affect us...if we are careless and insensitive, how will issues like this ever be resolved?
Nobody refers to anything as "Capital Hill" because it's supposed to be spelled with an "O". I really want a cheesesteak now.
@61 & 62: Ummm, actually, that's 4 cents.
Jesus Christ, I leave town for three days and LOOK WHAT HAPPENS!!!
Fnarfy, we're Wallingford neighbors! How exciting :-)
my goodness some of the actually comments on here are almost as disturbing as the slog. Geez with mentalities like the ones I a reading such as racism is really horrifying and nauseating. Do you really think like that ? All races kill each other one way or another - why do you think there is still war? Violence?? Because of ignorant racist statements and beliefs. Get a clue. Mourn death. Celebrate life.
@99: Goddamn hippy.
#97 - you read through all those comments just to post that? I stand corrected, and a little sad for you.
#99 - "Because of ignorant..."
WRONG!!!! You must be ignorant of what the word "ignorant" actually means. When I was "ignorant" of blacks I actually liked them and would stick up for them like you are doing. Once I had to actually live and work around them (lots and lots of them), and get to really KNOW how they are, I stopped liking them. Oh how I wish I was still "ignorant" and naive of the reality about blacks. If anything my feelings about blacks is the result of the direct opposite of IGNORANCE about them because now I KNOW.
I don't get the immediate leap to "gang" violence either. Perhaps there is more to the story that we don't know yet or perhaps it is indeed racism. Guess we'll have to wait and see.
@96 " let's be sensitive to the death of another human being"
They are not human. They are retarded ape-like creatures. The sooner humans figure this out, the better.
Re: the bystander who was killed, from King5: "The owner of the eatery, 32-year-old Dejene Berecha, was killed. The other victim, who has been upgraded from critical to serious condition at Harborview Medical Center, might have been a customer."
"Dejene Berecha was an Ethopian immigrant and a newlywed. Friends say he worked hard not only for himself, but to provide good jobs for his employees.
"He was an extremely hard worker, a good guy and a good friend," said Edward West.
"Berecha moved here from Ethiopia several years ago and had just started an exciting new chapter of his life. He started working at the restaurant as a dishwasher and would later go on to own it. He'd just been married a year ago and his wife was planning to join him from Ethiopia. Berecha also planning on moving his restaurant to a new location down the street this weekend."
Wasn't your first post about how the kids at TT Minor were somehow lacking in role models and the support they need to make choices other than gang membership ? All I'm saying is that the kids there (regardless of where they score on the tests) are rigorously encouraged to be the best people they can be. The school regularly wins chess tournaments and has a trophy-winning double-dutch team and marching band. The kids are given a free breakfast and a clean uniform if they need them. Respect, kindness and courtesy are insisted on.
I was commenting on the nurturing and community-based environment of the school not its academic prowess. Educational success is not just the responsibility of the schools, it is down to the parents too: like I said TT Minor provides many kids who don't have the support of their parents the stability, routine, and yes also the education that every child deserves. Saying a school is failing its children based on standardized test scores is not going to help them or encourage more money to be put into the school. Visit the school, meet the kids, talk to the staff. Making a judgement based on test scores is one of the mistakes I made about the school. It's easy to do but ultimately it really is not fair on the kids at TT Minor and - yes, I'll say it again - the hard-working teachers who work there.
Good God. I thought I was in Seattle. Where did all of you spiteful hateful freaks come from?
more or less important than heath ledger?
Why should we NOT be racist?
It's not like I am ever going to attack anyone, like all these blacks do.
I just know how they are, the biggest rapists and murderers on Earth, and am accordingly wary of them. What's wrong with that?
I highly doubt this was a gang related incident. If he's shooting his ex-girlfriend, and a customer and the owner. It sounds way more DV to me.
#100 trust me I am not much of a hippy - I don't even go to burning man. ;) I just believe in seeing the bigger picture that when someone gets killed its simply that - another human being getting killed. I don't care how much melatonin (or not) they have in their skin. And when it happens in my city I don't think the focus should be black vs white - the world is too small for that these days. If you really think like that you should move out of seattle because you are counter intuitive to the progressive way of thinking that the community that I am involved in goes for. Out.
@112: I'm not nearly as Earth Goddess as some posters here -- I have a dark view of humanity -- but I am 100% in agreement with you that the racist comments here are beyond the pale.
That's not to say that we should ignore any issues that are tearing apart any specific ethnic community -- including whites! -- but this insidious slamming of "all blacks" and other such idiocy is our common enemy.
In this, craven yuppie and damn hippy can join hands (just don't wear too much patchouli).
@112: If they have a lot of meltonin in their skin, they will be too sleepy to commit crimes.
I think you mean melanin. That was one of the best malapropisms I've seen in 2008! :-)
man, some of you guys are some stupid racist motherfuckers.
its about poverty not race. somebody comes from another part of town and shoots other people and you fuckers' hatred of blacks just spills out. there are violent white neighborhoods in america. try dochester or lynn or try south boston in the 80's. hell try parts of chicago in the 70's and 80's.
is like i tell friends from back east, this town is full of racist motherfuckers, theyre just too punk to show it in public.
is surprising how slog lets the anti black racist have the floor non stop. i wonder if they would do the same if they were anti semitic or deranged and hateful homophobes.
i guess i'll head back to SC where folks have learned to get along. Seattle is, and has always been, far more racist than SC. See - back there we all live together and have lived together for a long long time. Out here you got all your blacks and poor immigrants pushed down to the south end where you don't have to worry about them and you can pretend they don't exist. And if they don't exist then why do you have to even worry about whether you're racist or not?
This violence has to stop.
I live only a few blocks from here with my wife and 1 year old son. Only a month or two ago there was a gang shooting in front of my place- 11 shots fired at 2am.
If it means that the FBI needs to come in to back up the SPD so be it- this neighborhood needs to be cleaned up. Its not about race, nor poverty - this about respecting life, and realizing that vengence will get us nowhere.
I'm not worried about whether I am racist or not.
Humans are sick of TNB.
#114 you are right that is exactly what I meant!! Haha silly typo indeed. Anyway what should also be focused on as this is the second shooting in less then a week - the other one happened over near Pine and Bellevue. Seattle has always been relatively crime free so this recent wave is upsetting indeed. Sad.
Um, it's Capital with an "A", just like Capital Hill in Denver and Capital Hill in DC.
(A capitol is a building. A capital is the location of that building, as in a Hill, a City, or a District)
if i remember correctly, didn't you say a few weeks ago that the CD is not the 'hood'? it's all gentrified? my f-ing 2" caliper tree got shot (yes my tree) the other night in the CD. i'm not complaining, i know where i live, but the minute you see white people moving into your neighborhood it doesn't mean that the 'hood' has left the hood. whitetrash and blacktrash can live together (and shoot each other) in perfect 'hood' harmony.
@ 120 - did you even read your link?
"The only exceptions are place names alluding to capitol buildings in some way or other, like “Capitol Hill” in DC, Denver, or Seattle (the latter either named after the hill in Denver or in hopes of attracting the Washington State capitol building)."
Capitol Hill. With an "o". Please make a note of it.
Damn it! I was wrong you were right.
I say we forget about gun violence and gangs and work together to get that O changed into an A.
More news on the shooting and the corner in question.
okay six shaater!
Let's stop arguing about whether it's called Capital or Central District. Didn't you get the memo? It's called Madison Heights!
ecce homo, you ignorant slut.
According to the most recent available figures (2004), the occurance of white-on-white killing represented 46.1% of all murders committed in the U.S., while black-on-black murder represented only 40.7% of the total.
Now, WHICH RACIAL DEMOGRAPHIC is more violent? Say it with me, ecce...
I think you're 100% on the money. This place is very racist and somewhat stupid. Someone lost their life and instead of trying to come up with solutions for the community, all most people here can talk about is black people and if the cheesesteaks are authentic. Give yourselves a hand Seattle- you're a real class act.
Yeah, because I'll bet you'd NEVER see this kind of stuff on an L.A. or Philly, or D.C. or NYC or Atlanta, Chicago or Dallas based blog...
Stranger editors swiftly rush in and chop when Homophobic rhetoric is posted. But they are nowhere to be seen when Racist attacks against blacks or other races are made.
Last week a White guy killed a woman outside of her apartment on capital hill. Are all white males crazy? Should other races be afraid of white males that have long beards? Or be afraid of strange white males in high school???
If you think its violent here in seattle you wimps would have a blast in Russia, Ukraine, Northern Ireland, India, etc etc.
uh, that's the centrol district.

COMTE - you obviously have no understanding of proportions and percentages. Black people (all of them, men & women) make up only about 12 - 13% of the US population, which logically makes "crime-age" black men about 6% or less. 6% of the US commits about 52% of all murders and 34% of all rapes.
All whites make up at least 75% of the US population.
NOW - just imagine how awful things would be if blacks made up 50% of the US or more!
agree with @135
i'm not supporting ecce, and i would like to be friendly, but the figures you provided at your 'ignorant slut' post @129 show that black folks are MUCH more violent as a whole. right?
by your figures, blacks are >5 times more likely to commit same race on same race murders then whites.
pretty bad argument.
@133... Its not just whites, or just blacks, or asians, or gays that are crazy... For that matter its not even gaysians! All men are completely batshit crazy!
Thats why I say we dig a really big, deep pit and toss em all in there. We'll let them writhe around and starve to death. We can even have 24 hour news coverage and take bets on who will last the longest.
I suppose we should probably keep some of the more pleasant looking specimens in a cage somewhere so we can extract sperm from them for breeding purposes though. At least until we perfect a way to create life without the need for a male.
I guess that means that (at least for now) y'all are useful for one thing besides rape and murder!
@135 - You're mostly correct. Yes, COMTE doesn't understand the stats, but you say:
That's not fair. You're saying that being black causes an increase in violence. But all the numbers show is a correlation. That kind of thinking is pretty dangerous. You could say "if race was the sole indicator of violence, and the US was 50% black, things would be awful."...but that would just be speculative.
Your post is pure semantic BS and wishful thinking, and you know it, too.
Whats your solution?
Why do I have to have a solution?
Maybe a recognition of "true diversity" is a step... you know:
Diversity of intelligence levels
Diversity of impulse control
Diversity of morality
Diversity of criminality
Diversity of inherited temperment
etc etc etc
After all, "diversity" means "difference".
But if anyone suggests that there might be some REAL differences between blacks and everyone else, then you get shrieked at by wimpy liberals.
Diversity of cranial capacity
Diversity of testosterone levels
this is embarassing! i hope to god no black person has read this garbage. jenkem junky, i don't know if you're kidding, i hope you are, but even if thats the case you have a terrible sense of humor. i am NOT a liberal, i'd like to consider myself fairly moderate, so lets quit accusing the 'wimpy liberals'. perhaps there are some on this blog, but i'm not one of them, and i'm quite sure i'm not the person on here sticking up for blacks who isn't strictly liberal. not only are you making [negative] sweeping generalizations about black people, but also about people and their political stance.
that being said...who exactly, do some of you people think you are? i've never witnessed such apparent racism among younger adults. i'm also amazed that these comments are coming from seattleites! isn't this city known for it's progressive nature? what happened to that? have we decided, as a city, that since black people don't have a very large presence here, we'll simply forget about them and the struggles they face? have we decided to care only about the environment and gay rights and the anti-war movement and do away with the ugly stuff thats happening right here in america? i am not FROM seattle, and upon moving here i was happy to reside in a city that was open minded and progressive about many of the issues i care about. i don't understand where this "i'm better than you" attitude is coming from.
perhaps many of you have never had to deal with, live with and interact with those "black people" you speak so poorly of. i lived for the past five years in the city of Rochester, NY, where white people only make up about 40% of the population. I taught in an urban school there and needless to say most of my students were black and hispanic. THERE IS VERY LITTLE DIFFERENCE. they are smart, they are witty, they are NOT a-moral, they have interests, they have impulse control, they aren't criminally-minded from birth.
they've got everything priveledged people have got...except one thing: the knowledge that they HAVE a choice, that there IS hope, that they HAVE a future. many people in poverty-stricken sections of cities grow up without two parents, or parents who are junkies, or prostitutes, or criminals. what kind of influence is that? anyone born and raised in that environment is bound to be more likely to get into trouble, to make a bad decision, to get angry and lose control. might not you? ...and so the cycle repeats itself, it's hard to make a change or a difference.
these "blacks" or whoever you speak of [and for the record, we had white kids in our class, too, who were NO better off. poverty is poverty] are SO sweet and loving and wonderful when they're young- i know, i volunteered in several city elementary schools in rochester, they're just like every other kid on the planet, they like to doodle, to play, they like getting special treats, to give and get hugs...the difference is most of their hugs come from their loving and caring teachers, and food is given to them at school, and treats don't come from parents, they come from teachers as well.
please ask yourself, before making these awful statements, how you might turnout if your teacher loved you more than your mom? if your friends teachers all loved them more than their moms did? if your brother was shot and killed at 13? if you never had dinner waiting for you at home? there are those very wonderful, special success stories, but in most cases, these wonderful, smart and kind children, with nothing to lose, learn that giving up is easier, and so they do.
dude, i lived at 17th and union for about two years. the few times i went to that post office, when i was in the parking lot and at 23rd and union proper, i frequently felt like i was in an episode of the wire. granted, my boyfriend and i were violently mugged outside the twilight exit not long ago, so, for a while, i felt weirdly threatened by anybody in a hoody and baggy pants with skin color darker than a paper bag (fucked up, i know, but sort of justified at the time. also, i no longer have this irrational, racist fear. post-traumatic stress will do terrible things to your brain, and living in a city where race anxiety is a laughable luxury has done wonders.) but still, that shit was frightening. one time, the 12 bus was held up for an hour because of a shootout at that same corner. if there was a regular police presence in this area, it's likely the crime rate would drop... so, way to go s.p.d.!! y'all know where the crime is, but you can't bother to hang around and, you know, do your job to prevent crime from happening?! instead you give me dirty looks for jaywalking? awesome!
i live in new york now, and i go to columbia, where tensions are even higher, and more understandable, than in the c.d. and i feel way safer here most of the time than i did in the city in which i grew up.
stop letting this shit happen, seattle. i'm serious.
Some of the comments on this blog defy response. Good luck in hell, motherfuckers. As to the victims of this incident... RIP. It's a sad day in Seattle.
If you think about it as far as black crime and killing, do you forget about the New Year Eve stabbing, I guess that gentleman was black that used a knife and randomly stabbed a young woman to death.
Let's not forget about that Capital Hill rave party where "Huff" went off, he must have been black ... how many died?
Most of the supporters of the local drug dealers are white users. As Africian American homeowners in this area, we have to look at the white, white collar folks parked out our block day and nite getting their fix. Must be gangstas.
It's a shame that you all, I don't need to mention no blog - numbers can unleash your "white power" .... were you the ones who moved into this area in the last 7 - 10 years. What were you thinking then, don't come past Madison after 8 pm. Maybe you need to go back to the burbs, be drug free and correct your spelling.
And for those of you who love all people as one, this does not apply to you.
"Maybe you need to go back to the burbs, be drug free and correct your spelling."
oh the irony (ie "Capital Hill").
Seriously, the CD is really not that bad... try living in a real big city where the cops don't even show up until long after the ambulance has left and let's not forget that domestic violence can occur anywhere.
