Scientific Abstract of the Day

posted by on January 29 at 10:54 AM

In this study, the authors investigated the hypothesis that women’s sexual orientation and sexual responses in the laboratory correlate less highly than do men’s because women respond primarily to the sexual activities performed by actors, whereas men respond primarily to the gender of the actors. The participants were 20 homosexual women, 27 heterosexual women, 17 homosexual men, and 27 heterosexual men. The videotaped stimuli included men and women engaging in same-sex intercourse, solitary masturbation, or nude exercise (no sexual activity); human male–female copulation; and animal (bonobo chimpanzee or Pan paniscus) copulation. Genital and subjective sexual arousal were continuously recorded.

The genital responses of both sexes were weakest to nude exercise and strongest to intercourse. As predicted, however, actor gender was more important for men than for women, and the level of sexual activity was more important for women than for men. Consistent with this result, women responded genitally to bonobo copulation, whereas men did not. An unexpected result was that homosexual women responded more to nude female targets exercising and masturbating than to nude male targets, whereas heterosexual women responded about the same to both sexes at each activity level.

The study is here. A scorching hot picture of bonobos doing it is here.

Did Rick Santorum participate in the study? And if so, how would he have responded to any portrayals of man-on-dog intercourse?

This abstract was pointless. I already knew all that stuff. I guess I really am the worlds greatest lover.

So, the basic meaning of that last sentence is that lesbians respond more like men (i.e., gender matters most in sexual arousal). That is interesting...

Also, taking this to its logical conclusion, women should be more into bestiality, since it doesn't matter who's doing it, just that it's getting done. I wonder if that is actually the case...

Nah, it means that lesbians are more discriminating in their sexual tastes. ;-)

All I know is, every time I see 85-year-old platic-surgery victim Christie Brinkley bouncing up and down on Chuck Norris's latest piece of workout gear, I go all funny inside.

Does anyone know where I can join one of these nude gyms?

Perhaps I should surprise my girlfriend with some hot simian porn to get her in the mood.

So it’s confirmed. Dykes really are (relative to straight women) frigid.

Ok, time to invite the little lady over and rent Planet of the Apes. Holler!

I would like to thank The Stranger staffers for putting that stuff in links, instead of the main page.

Wait...how did they measure genital response? Is there a machine for that or something?

Yes, there is.

@11 several different kinds. Including clitoral MRI, developed right here at the UW.

Hot. I want to know where I can get one of those machines.

I believe that picture was taken by Frans De Waal, whose book Our Inner Ape I just read recently.

Personally, I find the pictures of two female bonobos doing it much hotter. According to De Waal, the most common sexual act in bonobo society is two females.

@Golob - Really? That's rad! I love my alma mater (with the exception of pass-dropping rapist tight ends).

There was a long article about bonobos and De Waal in the New Yorker recently: http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2007/07/30/070730fa_fact_parker

Recent researchers into bonobo behavior have called into question many of De Waal's conclusions. The problem for De Waal is HE HAS NEVER SEEN A BONOBO IN THE WILD. 100% of his observations have been in captivity, and he refuses to even consider the notion that behavior in concrete cells might be different in some ways than in the wild.

In particular, his descriptions of wild, free-flowing sexuality amongst bonobos, and their apparently peaceful nature, which have become quite popular in the popular, almost hippie, image of bonobos (to quote the article, "equal parts dolphin, Dalai Lama, and Warren Beatty") do not even remotely match what researchers have seen in the wild. Bonobos are famously difficult to observe in the wild; De Waal's lack was until recently not unusual at all. But they are nowhere near as peaceable, nor as promiscuously horny, as De Waal claims.

I have a friend who worked with a chimp at the Knoxville Zoo that would reach through the enclosure and stroke her boots with its hands while masturbating with its feet.

@20:

that's really really sad. fuck zoos.

i say we move a bunch of redneck assholes out of the ozarks & turn the bonobos loose. the culture wouldn't change much.

It's totally true, the study. I'm sure women even get turned on watching homosexual male porn too.

Not saying anything I'm just sayin....

I'm not having a genital response to that picture, though I think it's just because they look so bored.
