Rossi Emerging as Candidate of the Christian Right

posted by on January 3 at 12:41 PM

This is a pretty long-winded email from Gary Randall, president of the Faith and Freedom Network—the conservative lobbying and activist group that stands up for Washington State’s oppressed Christians.

But it’s noteworthy. The ultimate message is this: The Faith and Freedom Network is throwing its weight (and money*) behind gubernatorial candidate Dino Rossi because they want to fight against the secularist agenda. (*They don’t have much cash on hand right now, according to the Public Disclosure Commission—about $600.) Randall’s Rossi email says:

Faith and Freedom will have a lobbyist team in Olympia beginning this next week. Faith and Freedom has also set up a political action committee (PAC). The PAC will be used to endorse, recruit, help train and fund like-minded political candidates. The PAC is raising money to directly support Dino Rossi and other conservative candidates. It has already conducted one candidate training session and will be holding at least 5 more.

Funny, Dino Rossi keeps saying he’s not running on their issues.

Of course, I don’t buy that. And, obviously, neither does the Faith and Freedom Network.

That's fantastic news. The Christian Right has NEVER been able to win anything in this state. Pragmatic, moderate Republicans yes; kook Jesusland emissarys no. You'd think Rossi could figure that out.

Maybe the Christian Right is all he has left. Other than a few die hard Sound Politics dead-enders convinced they were robbed in 2004.

I wish they would have someone run who would actually put up a fight. This guy just makes Gregoire look great when really we could be making political progress.

Could this be any thinner?  A fundie group with approximately no money endorsing the Republican candidate, wow.  Seriously, who else are they going to endorse?  Gregoire?

Your conclusion about Rossi's agenda may be correct, but this is not evidence.

Josh, motorcycling is hot, hot, hot. Smarty Pants knows it, Cafe Racer knows it, and even the dull old New York Times woke up and noticed. If they can ever figure out how to spell his name, Valentino Rossi could be governor of anything he wanted.

Remember what happened to Democrats who disdained NASCR? Same thing, that's all I'm saying.

We need to make fun of Sound Politics more often on this blog. :-)

You know what would lock Rossi out of the governor's mansion more effectively than overt endorsements from fundie organizations? The D's running a candidate with actual D's credentials. Gregoire is a conservative wolf in a liberal sheep's blood-soaked hide. In the future: if you don't want razor-thin margins then run a candidate with a platform.

Fonky...your position makes no sense whatsoever.

Dino would sell his children to get elected. In fact he would sell them anyway for a good price. So we should not be shocked at all when he decides to come out as the closeted right winger he has been since the start, the moment he is told that this will help him pile up some more cash. When voters are more focused on this race, in say mid summer, Rossi will distance himself from the very folks with whom he sees eye to eye and again try to define himself as a moderate fiscal guru. If he has enough cash and can sell is BS with that smile then we are in deep shit come November.

Of course neither Faith and Freedom nor their PAC has filed with the PDC since July, so who know's what they really have. What are the rules for PACs filing with the PDC? Looking at their blog, it seems FFN has been quite active in politics and fundraising since July, when are they required to file the contributions/expenditures related to this activity?

@8

What do you mean? Perhaps I didn't make myself clear...

Running an ideologically strong Democrat in the gubernatorial race against Dino Rossi (rather than Gregoire who is a weak-willed centrist/conservative D) would hurt Rossi's chances of being elected more than Rossi running with the endorsements of some fundamentalist organization (which might draw some new voters out of the woodwork in his favor). In other words: if we don't want to see another 2004 Washington State Gubernatorial race (with razor thin margins) then the D's should run somebody with liberal creds. It's the same reason why John Kerry and Al Gore lost: they didn't pull the liberal base at all and pandered to centrists who are more easily swayed by the strength/fear-rhetoric of the GOP.

Yo Funky, you really should run. Your slogan could be bow to Seattle so we can have one Washington.
Really, if you look out from behind those emerald goggles for just a sec, you might note that State Government under the leadership of this governor has achieved more for people across this state in 3/4's of one term than Lock did his entire time in office. Though I love them, Booth did not finish much and Lowry crashed 1/2 way through.
Given these facts, you vex me oh Funky. Rossi would be a corrupt disaster and somehow you think people should oppose the reelection of Gregoire since she is not far enough left. And "weak willed" are you shitting me? Chris is tough as nails with eyes that cut like cigarettes. She is "touring the facility and taking up slack".
This reminds me...she really needs a theme song and a loooong jacket!

Geez--and I was sure that Christine Gregoire was going to be the Emerging Candidate of the Christian Right, this time around.

Remember the kooky Christian lady they ran for Governor 10 years or so ago? What was her name? Was she the one that wanted to return to the McGuffy Reader for primary schools, or was that the kooky Christian lady they ran against McDermott?

And just what is a McGuffy reader? I never could figure that one out.

I think we're looking at some scared little rabbits in the Republicants side who can't think because they're paralyzed by fear.

Created by themselves.

No Rapture will save them.

But the 10 foot Blue Wave will wash them clean.
