onHe has been director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York since 1977. The news comes from the New York Sun via Artsjournal.
UPDATE: The New York Times weighs in on possible successors (not a woman in the bunch, notably), Michael Kimmelman registers his adoration, and Richard Lacayo is deferential, but offers almost no praise at all.

Christ, I thought that was a cigar name.
too bad Geldzahler is dead.
They will never again find somebody with a name that cool.
Any truth to this rumor on Philippe de Montebello's future plans (let's hope)? It's here: http://diary.typepad.com/alan_horns_diary/2008/01/january-11-2008.html
