Seriously, though, I have done a lot of work on polyploidy with plants. Have never seen anyone work with colchicine in mammalia. Diploidy is almost guaranteed, if it doesn't die first, and 4X is not at all uncommon.

And for you Luddites out there (yes, Will, you), colchicine is one of the most mutagenic substances known to man. But here's the real shobker - nicotine is even more so. No joke, look it up.

I call bullshit on nicotine's :teratogenity". Smoking during pregnancy was sufficiently widespread for a long enough time (many generations) that almost everyone born in the last century ought to be hideously deformed. And, snarky jokes aside, that's not the case. Nicotine is just the scapegoat -- it's a carcinogenic poison, sure, but it's no worse than the shit that gets sprayed on absolutely everything we eat and drink. That's why people who don't smoke and have non-smoking parents still die of cancer. "Healthy" people can still produce mutant offspring -- and mostly they're detected in the 1st trimester to enable abortion if that's the case. The problem is not nicotine. The problem is "pro-lifers", most of which are mutant freaks anyway.
