BTW, I do see The Daily Show and Real Time as 'real' news shows. Thank goodness they have hosts and guests who can talk without a script. (And Dan was definitely the best!)

I know that's true of The Daily Show. (Jon Stewart admits it - and it's often obvious.) But I didn't realize it applied to "Real Time," too. I always thought Bill Maher wrote his own material.

And I still don't think Dan is a scab... I see him as reporting NEWS - from a perspective not covered by anyone else. (At least that's the way I WANT to see it ;-))

I second the concerns others have voiced here about someone of your talent appearing on Real Time in the midst of the writer's strike.

This is genius

Dan speaks extemporaneously, he has nothing to do with Hollywood's screenwriter's strike. He saved the day. Without Dan, (and those silly interviews) the show would have sorely missed 'new rules'.
Forgive my sounding like a jewish mother, but Dan, you need to put on some weight. Youve got us all worried.

I should add that I totally support the Writers' Guild of America in their attempt to get paid for crucial Internet residuals. The show didn't use any written material, and I never do in public speaking. I was asked to go on a national TV show to talk about the election, and promote my recent Atlantic cover-story. And I hope the WGA wins their battle.

To that I would add...

Colbert, Stewart, and Maher aren't merely entertainment programs. They are, for a great many people, news programs, the places they get info about politics, candidates, and elections. There is a writers' strike on. There is an election on too. We can't sit out the conversation about the election -- and that's all I did on Maher. Converse. Nothing was scripted, I wrote nothing down. I viewed it the same way I viewed going on CNN or MSNBC.

I didn't, and wouldn't, start writing scripts for, say, Lost. I think the WGA should have made an exception for programs like Colbert and Maher's, and it was a tactical error not to. They are, I think, too important and the stakes are too high as we move to a vote on the next PUSA to have Colbert, Stewart, and Maher off the air/cable/Internets.

Finally, I didn't cross a picket line -- there wasn't a picket line at the studio. And I was relieved because I would have felt terrible about crossing a picket line for the first time in my life... in the back seat of a limo.
