Great post. Explains a lot.

HRC's speeches are lists of issues that aim at distinct subgroups. This has been a problem for Democrats since the 1970s. A coalition of interest groups.
It's enough to win Congress often but typically over the last few decades not enough for the presidency or building a permanent working majority of Americans or a broader Democratic vision.

Meanwhile, the R's often spoke in broader terms in this period-- often called values -- aiming at America as a whole.

It's wonderful to hear Obama use uplifting and uniting themes, like hope, which tie together and garner the energy of a broader set of Americans. He taps into fundamental American values. He projects a future based on those deeper values, and even better, weaves it all out of the "relatable past". (He said hope had motivated a tiny band of colonists fighting the huge British Empire; it motivated our soldiers in WW2 who liberated Europe; and the civil rights marchers in Selma and Birmingham. In a few words he united several generations and tied us all together -- everyone who loves America itself, fighting for freedom, fighting for equality).

That's the way FDR spoke.
There's many problems with Obama, flaws and limitations, as with any candidate, but on the vision thing he's nailed it.

Not just FDR, it's the way JFK spoke.

Obama's trying to be America's President, the voice of the 21st Century.

Clinton's trying to be the MSM President, the voice of the Beltway Elite and the 20th Century.

It shows.
