I agree with Fnarf.

But, this points out that those who dissed what I said about the perception of safety were wrong.

Safety is a myth. If you're worried about it, the best thing you can do is get some martial arts training, ESPECIALLY if you're a woman.

The worst thing you can do is buy a gun. (exception: a shotgun is a useful weapon even unloaded, but should be kept inside your house).

It's about time for us to institutionalize dangerous psychos before they kill someone.

Narrenschiff? Jeez, where'd you pull that one out from? Slog has medievalists, who knew? (I didn't, I googled it: ship of fools).

fucking yikes.

does anyone know how to find out where this guy was living? i know they said he was a transient, but that doesn't necessarily mean homeless, and with the variety of halfway houses in the area, i'm wondering if he lived in one of those... because i live next to two....

Forget martial arts... buy a handgun, take a shooting class oriented toward self defense, and get a Concealed Carry Permit. It's clear that "society", the "System", the Police, and your neighbors are not going to be there for you in a time of dire need (as Shannon found herself in).

When you are confronted by a fucking psycho who the "system" was too fucking liberal or liability-averse to do what should have been done, the only one who can save you is yourself. I know this sounds extreme, but its the world we live in, like it or not.

The killer, in this case, most recently lived in that halfway house on the 1700 block of Summit Ave. You know, the one with all the freaks hanging out on the sidewalk all day and night.

Bet those neighbors are a bit more careful these days, given the clientele. I think the other person of interest in this case also lived there. (The guy with a history of violence against women whose DNA turned out not to be a match.)

Fuck Neighborhood Watch...form a neighborhood Militia!

According to a P-I story he was living in a "halfway house" on Summit Avenue . . .

there are three buildings that come to mind, all in the 1700 block of Summit Avenue:

#1 The Curben "Hotel"
Privately run by sleazy Bellevue lawyer Karl Neiders. This building historically has accepted a large number of sex offenders and ex-offenders from prison, though agreed to stop accepting level 3 sex offenders (the most dangerous kind) around 2003 due to neighbors and the city putting pressure on them to clean up their act.

#2 The Angle Tree (sic)
An SRO but "market rate" apt. building run by Pioneer Human Services, a non-profit which provides housing and jobs for people transitioning from incarceration. Though not perfect, they seem to be willing to run a reasonably good operation.

#3 The Summit Inn
Run by Community House Mental Health Agency, an organization which has been in the news recently. This building provides housing for schizophrenic adults who cannot live on their own.

My vote is for #1 as being the residence of the person in question.

meant to mention that the Curben "Hotel" and the Summit Inn are literally next door to each other.

He was at the Summit Inn at time of murder, but had just recently moved in.

And @10: He seems to have been drifter. I saw one article that referred to arrests in the south and southwest.

For over 20 years, Capitol Hill has served as the states dumping ground for the criminally insane. When it was just a few queers here nobody cared. And not that many criminally insane are gay. Now that there's wave upon wave of young women around, their lives are definitely in danger. This is as bad as Mia Zapata's killing was in 93, or the massacre caused by Kyle Huff. In each case Seattle was the last stop for some jackoff who came from someplace else and managed to make a place for himself here, mostly due to our welcoming every stinking loser that arrives and handing them as much as we can, all in the interest of liberalism and a philosophy enacted mostly by people that don't live among the consequences -- does Nickels ever see the chronic inebriation and crazies that are in Cal Anderson park every day? Does the City Council ever wonder what happens when we "make assisted living and helping the homeless" a civic priority? Do the cops ever wonder why they spend more time ignoring petty crime than acting on it? (Unless the petty crime involves students protesting the war, they're ALL OVER that)

Seattle has a very welcoming policy to newcomers. Usually it works out fine. Some of them even go on to found alternative newspapers. But is it really in Capitol Hill's best interest to have so many homeless and patient housing all clustered so close? Up and down Summit, Pike and Pine, and that new Wallgreens upstairs (where there've already been multiple incidents involving meth dealing, no thanks to the Bill and Melinda Foundation who recommended the people that moved in and set up shop)

At some point, the Hill needs to evolve out of the 20 years ago mindset of it being an edgy dumping ground off the radar of polite society. If young people continue to move here, they will continue to encounter the criminally insane that are also housed among us in a concentration unequal to anywhere in the state, save for maybe McNeil Island.

I'd jail every homeless person here, because frankly I'm tired of the crap they create, but then I'd be called a bad name by some of the more open hearted among us, and that would suck, since I really just want whats best for the hill, my home for the last 18 years, none of them spent using state or charity resources, except that one summer we ate some free food in 1992.

Out of curiousity... Has there been any word on exactly what James Williams was doing in that part of the neighborhood?

As far as I've heard he didn't live at the hotel on Summit at the time of the murders so it makes me wonder if he was living and/or receiving services at the Seattle Mental Health buildings that are located on 16th & 17th Aves. I live across the street and while its generally pretty chill over there, I immediately had suspicions that the stabber had ties to the place but haven't heard any mention of it in the news I've seen/read.

He is a client of Sound Mental Health (formerly Seattle Mental Health). He did not live at Summit Inn and was not affiliated with Community House Mental Health Agency. My guess is he lived at the Curben.

According to the Seattle Times (1/28/08), Williams moved into the Curben on 1/4 (after the murder). Prior to that he lived at the Arnold Berkley House on Union.
